Cassis Bistro is a small but welcoming French bistro in Cow Town. The food and the ambiance transports you to France. My standard weekend lunch consists of black olive tapenade followed by the daily quiche special. Yesterday it was spinach and goat cheese.

Dinner is equally fantastic with beef tartare, steak and frits, or a chicken liver salad.

The wine selection is also amazing and truly French as well. And, while it might be a bit more expensive than a trip to the pub, it is oh so worth the little extra because you get a lovely taste of France. Tres Bon!!

Was fullly booked Saturday, so had to wait till Sunday.

Wait staff were polite and attentive unlike some other reviews - I was early (5pm seating) and the bistro had no more than half a dozen tables so perhaps that helped.

Had the soup du jour which was today a leek & potato fare, followed by the plat du jour which was pork medallions with mash and a salad. Both v good. Pork had a good sauce so they must have taken the advice here on Tripadvisor to get a saucier. Both were good enough that I wiped down the plates with the bread.

Then had the Île Flottantes. Très bien. But it was the largest Île Flottantes I've ever had. Come to think of it, the soup du jour and plat du jour were v large compared to anything in Aix, Vence, Arles, or Nimes. Could only finish half the dessert.

Glass of Bordeaux was poor, I reckon vin de table quality but cost $18 for a glass. Rather suspect the Canadian tax situation has something to do with it. Yesterday saw a bottle of 1999 Pichon Longueville for >CAD$200 in a wine shop which is outrageous when the 2000 is only going for just under $200 elsewhere in the world.

Total bill $61 excluding tip. Would repeat. But maybe only order dessert if I was sharing - you have been warned! And I would probably stay away from the wine (and slash the bill by one third!). They did have Kronenbourg so maybe a draft next time.

The only thing missing maybe is someone performing chansons...

PS Gilles, if you are reading this, do you know where one can get any calissons? Preferably from Confiserie Entrecasteaux? The stuff they have in CDG is not very good.

Even mid-week, this small intimate bistro in an unlikely part of Calgary was, well, busy! I estimate it may seat 80, plus a few at the bar. And it was packed. The menu is short, as is the wine list, but both offer a good selection to suit most tastes. (They do have a unique advantage in that directly adjacent to the restaurant is a high-end food market as well as a wine store.) Cuisine is that of southern France, a region from which the owner hails. Aperitifs, appetizers and mains that we tried were all well presented and flavourful although my wife did find the duck a little salty. The service was both friendly and efficient. We lingered over our meal and we were not rushed.

I like the steak et frites. I love the salad, vinaigrette est superbe! The charcuterie is good. L'ile flottante is good as well as the chocolate dessert. Cappuccinos are great!
