Description: Smuggler's Inn originally began in 1967 as Bar X Steakhouse, an American company. The current owner, Frank Krowicki, bought out his partners and went to work developing a brand new concept to Calgary. His vision included a mix of casual, late night fine dining and live piano bar. Over the years, the building expanded around Smuggler's Inn, with the addition of Winelite dining room on the west side, and Backstreet lounge and dining room on the north side. As the dining scene in Calgary began to change, Frank too saw a need to change and adapt. The first endeavour was the conversion of Backstreet lounge to Open Sesame in 2000. Open Sesame has been serving fresh, Pan Asian cuisine to happy customers ever since. The conversion of Backstreet dining room to Bolero was complete in 2007. As Calgary's first Brazilian style steakhouse, Bolero continues to satisfy meat lovers with its unique and interactive style of dining. Our latest addition is Tango Bistro, on the west side of the building, which once was Winelite dining room. At Tango Bistro, we bring together delicious, hand crafted small plates and fantastic wine to create a casual atmosphere for all to enjoy. In May 2013, Smuggler's Inn celebrated 40 years of serving mouth-watering Alberta prime rib and steaks alongside many original items, which have made us famous around the world. Four restaurants under one roof keeps us busy, but we wouldn't have it any other way. And the rest, as they say, is history! Smuggler's Group Rewards is a unique program that rewards you every time you visit us. For every dollar you spend, you earn points towards FREE Loyalty Certificates from Smuggler's Group Of Restaurants. Whenever you make a purchase, simply present your Smuggler's Group Rewards Card. “Delicious Scallops and Beef Tenderloin!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

We sent to Tango tonight, using a Living Social coupon, which gives you a 5 course tasting meal with wine pairings. There were a number of choices to choose from, including gluten-free possibilities, which were appreciated as my husband is allergic to gluten, Each item was individually served with the paired wine. We started out with the seared scallops, prepared with wild mushrooms in a most tasty parsnip and nutmeg sauce. These were delectable! Every last morsel thoroughly enjoyed. Will order this again, hands down! On to the next course, the Mojo lettuce-wrapped pork. This was our least favourite of the evening, in that it had only a modest amount of flavour (the meat was quite bland) despite the salsa that looked quite pretty, but the juices were so runny that my hands were covered in drippings. Our third pick, the charcuterie board, was a very nice selection of meats and cheeses, with additional accompaniments, which were a nice complement to the main ingredients. Actually two of the cheeses may have had gluten exposure (blue cheese in one of the cheeses and a cheese that contained Guinness beer). These cheeses are very good (I ate them, since I can have gluten), but the kitchen should be aware that blue cheese mould is often grown on wheat, and beer is usually made with grains that have gluten). We were able to work our way around these issues, and enjoyed this plate a great deal. Our last plate was the wild boar bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin, with a blue cheese cream on the side. The bacon wrapped meat was sooo good, very tender and flavourful, the bacon very high quality. Would definitely order this again. We rounded out the meal with dessert...my husband got the chocolate raspberry truffle pops, which were very good, and I had two of the shot glass desserts...the black forest chocolate number and the cheesecake, both delish, though quite sweet. The wine pairings were good (3 oz. servings for each course plus port with dessert). We returned the decaf coffee we ordered...too acidic and seemed off. The service was very good and well-paced, given the multiple wine selections. Expect to take some time if you are doing the multiple courses with wine pairings. All in all, this was a very enjoyable meal and we left feeling full and very well fed. Definitely a treat!

“Absolutely fantastic 5 course meal with wine pairing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

We had an anniversary to celebrate so chose an evening at Tango. The wine pairing menu intrigued us and we weren't disappointed! This wasn't our first visit to Tango - every meal we have enjoyed there has been great, but this really was special. First of all, our server, David, was so attentive and pleasant - he really seemed to enjoy how much fun WE were having with all the delightful tastes and had lots of advice and comments about the wines and food choices. We did the five course menu and were blown away at how generous all the portions were. The trio of dips were wonderful...the hummus especially rich with flavor and more bread than we could manage! Our second course was pulled pork lettuce wraps, followed by an AMAZING charceuterie plate - divine cheeses and meats with a great housemade preserved chutney. The beef tenderloin skewers with a blue cheese drizzle and parsley pesto was delicious and the lovely thing about this restaurant is the attention to detail...so nice presented!
The wine pairings were thoughtful and spot on, complimenting the dishes beautifully. Dessert was a healthy splash of Port with a little truffle pop and small shot of your choice of dessert. Just enough to finish things off. Can't say enough about this place Five stars!

“Great date night.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

We went here as for a special date night and were very impressed. Walking in, the decor and atmosphere is very classy yet warm and comfortable. We were seated at table in an out-of-the-way corner which offered us some nice privacy. The water comes with cranberries in it, which I thought was a nice little touch. It was great to see a variety of different groups there that night, too. This was also our first time at a tapas restaurant, and we will certainly be returning! Our favourite was the scallop dish. Some of the best scallops I'd had in a long time! The yam wedges were a close second.

“6 friends,good food, great atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

6 friends, great red and white wine. We made reservations so as each of us arrived the waitress was over to ask for drinks. She let us continue to talk and told us to turn the menu around when we were ready. This is a tapas restauraunt so we each ordered a dish and then shared amongst ourselves. The menue we had is below. The decor is nice, rich, dark. Bathrooms function and not too cold.
1. We started with 5 mushroom soup. omg. so good. chunks of mushroom. great flavour. One of our ladies ordered one to take home for her lunch the next day. We were all served as one by several waiters so thast was nice. We could go to this restaurant daily for this soup.

Our individual dishes came with space between them which we didn't realize was going to happen so our poutine and boar got a bit cold. Otherwise things were okay.
1. Poutine - great. cheese great, lots of gravy. lots of fries.
2.wild boar wrapped tenderloin. 3 bigger pieces of meat which we cut up to share. melted in your mouth! The chips that were included were good and crisply. Could have been a few more as we were sharing our plates but would have been enough if you were eating this yourself.
3.Turkey Sliders. Hmmmm, I am on the fence with this one. It was good but not really good. The meat was on little crusty bread pieces. Not my favorite and I wouldnt order again. Out of our 6 only 1 said she would order again.
4. crab cake. 3 pieces. It was good but nothing special. we all agreed it would not be something any of us would order again
5. Yam wedges. Yummy, yummy, yummy. nice big pieces with great dipping sauce.
6. Roasted artichoke flatbreak. FANTASTIC. This was on the whole plate so was quite nice and big. Good flavour. Lots of topping.
DESSERT:
1.Smores - cool little fire with a couple of marshmellows and some hershey chocolate. Very good.
2. One girl had a shot of something which I cannot remember. She said it was chocolately and smooth
3. the bread pudding - again I can't remember what this was called exactly but it was nice individual servings which we shared between two people. Nice with a bit of spice.

Overall, the food is great along with the atmosphere. A couple of issues with serving (delayed dishes, our coffee wait time to come) Staff friendly.
