Travelodge Hotel Calgary Macleod Trail
Ranked #97 of 110 Hotels in Calgary
Reviewed May 3, 2008

Located in a very commercialized area a few miles south of downtown Calgary, the outside of this hotel could use a facelift. The plaster was rotting away and the colors made it look even worse. It is a pretty large hotel though, with 6 floors. Easy to find.

When we entered the lobby, we were expecting a little different. Not bad, but very basic with an odd divider that hid the office equipment behind the desk. We were traveling with a large group and at first, they said the rooms weren't available yet. After a couple minutes, they were, I guess the housekeepers had just called them in as clean.

After getting off the bus, we headed to the elevator. WOW, the scarriest elevator that I had ever been in. Surprisingly, it looks pretty new and modern, but once we started moving, it made some horrible sounds which made you think that it was going to break down any second. This was true for both elevators and happened each time so eventually, we got used to it. The hallways were a little dark and gloomy.

Once we got to our rooms, we found them to be normal size, but not queen beds, double beds. They look like they had some fairly new furniture and bedding, but the room still seemed a little gloomy. The windows had condensatioin in between and the tiny slide open window only opened a few inches. There are very few outlets in the room and two of them did not work, including the one that the air conditioner was plugged into.

Even though the room was clean, the bathrooms left something to be desired. Loose floor tiles, cracking walls, stained ceiling panels and a rust encrusted shower head was a little depressing. We expected a little more, but lived with it.

Located on the lower level, just below the lobby, is their pool area. Very surprised. Nicely renovated and very clean. Nice and bright and the water was warm. The pool was shallow, only 5 feet deep, but served the purpose. The hot tub was very warm and spacious. Nice at the end of the day!

Since it is a Travelodge, we kinda figured there would be a basic breakfast, but we didn't realize that there WASN'T one. They advertise a "restaurant", but there's signs for a "Comedy Cave" and no restaurant. We never really understood if the restaurant was included with their comedy club, but didn't have breakfast.

Staff was a little inexperienced, and called us a couple times with a noise complaint which wasn't us, but oh well...

The area around the hotel is decent, but the parking lot is narrow and there's signs all over saying the hotel is not responsible for damage and that type of stuff....kinda scarry if you think about it.

Overall, we wouldn't stay here again, but we can see that the hotel is slowly going under some renovations. There are lots of restaurants in the immediate area, not really walking distance though. A nice mall down the way with a great food court and an IMAX (Chinook). I'm sure after they renovate the entire place, it will be nice, but it's certainly a little worn right now...

A mixed experience - On the positive side the hotel was located where we wanted to be and the family room was big enough for us as well as having 2 bathrooms.
On the negative it wasn't very clean, the dust behind the chest of drawers was unbelievable and that was where the wires for all the electric appliances looked like very tangled spaghetti - not particularly safe looking or tucked away. The staff seemed demotivated and I think in 3 days only 1 of them smiled.
We are unlikely to use this hotel again.

After checking in, we opened the door to our room, only to find a man using the toilet (door open)! We told hotel staff that there was someone in our room, and she assured us there wasn't, but gave us a new room anyway. I have no idea if this man was either a maintenance guy, or just some random guy with a key to our room. I did not feel like the security was good at all. Also, hallways smell musty and dirty. Rooms need major upgrades, they feel dirty, cheap and old. Definately don't waste your time or money here.

Plus: Helpful staff, room generally clean, free broadband internet. Minus: Rundown elevator, switch of room light broken, old TV & remote unresponsive, tiny basic bathroom, 1 babybed for the whole hotel, windows dirty. Needs a thorough makeover. Overpriced for 150CAD/dbl.queen&night.

This hotel is NOT recommended to anyone.

This has to be the dirtiest hotel that I have ever had the unfortunate opportunity to stay at.

It seems that thier idea of changing the sheets involves just turning them over between guests. The floor was caked with filth and the chairs were so dirty that I did not even sit in them.

When I complained about the filth I was told by the front desk staff that nobody has ever complained and that they would not give me a different room or my money back.

I sure wish I would have read the reviews before coming to this hotel. We were greeted with much confusion at check-in... rooms not ready, had to wait almost 2 hours for our room, nobody seemed to care. When we got to our room, there was a gross tray of somebody's leftover room service food in the doorway... we had to step over it to get into our room. (the tray stayed there until 11:00 pm when we returned from our hockey game and I finally asked the front desk to remove it).
The room was filthy... not vacuumed, drink rings on nightstand & desk, holes burned in blankets, etc.
After our first night, towels were taken out but fresh towels were not supplied... same thing for the in-room coffee. Still not vacuumed either.
Check out went OK, but everyone who was checking out seemd to have the same type of complaints... again, no one seemed to care.
The room was cheap, we were only there for a hockey tournament so we weren't in the room too much, but it was so bad that it really spoiled our trip.
