“Sleepless nights”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

This hotel is a grand old station hotel of the finest traditions. It is situated in downtown Calgary almost next to the Calgary Tower -which is very useful for finding your way back. It is very close to everything you might need including the C train for getting around. As you enter, reception is splendid with crystal chandeliers, the staff are helpful on checking and checkout. the room was standard fare for a Fairmont, or so I thought, but sadly during my 4 might stay I didn't manage to get a full nights sleep. The bed was one of the more uncomfortable I have slept in having a dip in the middle , but the main problem was the noise. the hotel is an old railway hotel and the railroad runs just behind the hotel.Very long, very heavy and very noisy trains run all through the night and literally make the room shake (I was on the 10th floor) I got to know the schedule and came to expect the 4 am train. The windows are double glazed, but it does absolutely nothing to keep the noise level down. After just managing to doze off I was wakened again by the chatter of cleaners and the reloading of their trolley cart from the store next to my room. I left exhausted after my time in what is supposed to be a luxurious hotel. I also had wifi problems on two occasions not being able to log in, apparently being due to an upgrade which was ongoing , it was irritating having to go downstairs to reception to sort the problem out when in the middle of working, and took over half an hour to get it sorted on each occasion, but hopefully this isn't a recurring problem. buffet breakfast was good with a variety of different choices and cost over 30 dollars a head. All in all a splendid hotel to look at, Fairmont type standards, but need to put in new glazing in the rooms as the current glazing isn't doing the job.

Room Tip: Try asking for a room at the front- although you have the traffic on this side as we'll.

Hello,

Isn’t the Calgary Tower the perfect landmark? We are happy to hear you also thought so! We’re also pleased to hear that you enjoyed dining with us for breakfast. We do though, apologize for the inconvenience that the train nosie had on your sleep and it sounds like you were on Track Side. We do have earplugs available for guests where the noise affects them falling asleep, but we certainly do our best to accommodate room requests as best we can. If you’re able to email me directly, I’d be happy to note on your guest preferences to ensure you’re on the opposite side of where the train goes by. My email is: jacqueline.tyler@fairmont.com. Thanks again for taking the time to provide feedback.

We stayed here for 4 nights and very much enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very historic with a beautiful lobby area. It's close to everything downtown with easy walking access to lots of nice restaurants. Valet parking is expensive ($38 on weekdays & $30 on weekends) but being downtown and able to have in/out privleges, it's probably the best option. We stayed in one of their newly renovated rooms on the 4th floor. It was nice and had a very comfortable bed and large bathroom area. Calgary Tower is very close by. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for one of their newly renovated rooms.

I recently made a mistake in my booking a room at the Palliser. I got the week wrong. Despite it being a very busy week in Calgary they were able to reverse all the charges from the week before when I was a no show and find me an excellent room.
The service in this hotel is first rate.
It is a lovely property but the caring staff make it special.

Room Tip: The Gold floor is worth it. A great lounge.

We stayed for a night to celebrate a birthday. The service was stellar by everyone we had contact with, from room service to housekeeping, and front desk. Really quite impressive. Staff went out of their way to wish my partner a happy birthday-including room upgrade and a delicious piece of cake. Room features (duvet, bath soap, etc.) were high quality. Hotel is downtown next to Calgary tower and shopping. Cons-hotel looks dirty from outside and decore is typical Fairmont antique style-not my cup of tea. Our non-smoking room smelled like smoke (they even brought in an ozonater to remove the smell to no avail) and we were too busy to move rooms. If service is of primary importance definitely stay here, otherwise there may be better options.

Fairmont properties are always a bit of a surprise as there is such a difference in their hotels depending on whether it's a resort / heritage building or one of the new modern new builds. I'd say this is one of the better properties in their network and it is far better maintained than the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The rooms are comfortable and clean although there wasn't really anything that made this property "pop" as an extraordinary stay. The hotel is a classic beauty so for anyone who loves history this is an iconic property that reflects the old CP Hotel era. My only complaint is that the washroom toiletries are rose scented so as a male I could do without smelling like roses.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room facing away from the rail lines and high enough so that you can see the...

Stayed at this hotel for one night only. The location is great, right in the middle of town. The Calgary Tower is very close by as well. Continental breakfast was good but a bit expensive I thought. Room was clean and had plenty of space. Did not try any of the bars.

Very impressive hotel and lobby, but the room we had was small with a view onto the traintracks.Woken up during the early hours by shunting.Small bathroom but with all amenities one could require.Hotel is very nicely situated within walking distance of shops, museum, the tower, restaurants etc.We used the spa pool, very nice.Had Wi-Fi in the room(I don't think we paid extra for it as another reviewer mentions..)We had a hire car and the hotel provides valet parking(extra cost)We did not have any meals here as the menu looked a bit expensive compared to the nearby restaurants. We enjoyed our stay nevertheless.
