“Great location, beautiful hotel”
Reviewed July 17, 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our Canadian road trip and had hired a car from the airport. Parking is right next door to the hotel and was very cheap ($20 approx) for a whole weekend. The hotel is beautiful, with lots of original features, impressive lobby and spacious bedrooms. We checked in and the member of staff who helped us was the only negative of our stay here, as she wasn't very welcoming or helpful. The concierge was really helpful and suggested a restaurant for breakfast calls Reds, which was delicious and worth the 10 minute walk from the hotel.
The bedrooms are very well appointed with good sized bathrooms, walk in closet and safe as well. The pool area, located in the basement, was nice with a jacuzzi and loungers to relax.
The location is excellent within the city centre and I would recommend this hotel, particularly as we booked this via the Fairmont website and got what we felt was a very good deal for 2 nights stay.

Stayed at the Palliser for one night since my usual place was sold out. Overall, the hotel itself is gorgeous and very typical of the Fairmont chain. Our room however was below average. Many reviews speak of renovated rooms which I don't believe we had as it was stuffy, warm (even with the AC on) and cramped. There was also a particular odor when you exited the elevator on the third floor. It was a musty smell that was most unpleasant. Definitely can't fault any of the staff, all extremely pleasant and professional.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review The Fairmont Palliser on TripAdvisor. As of June 2011, we have completed a significant renovation project to include floors 4, 5 and 6 and an expanded Fairmont Gold level on floors 7 and 8. We have also added a brand new Fairmont Gold Lounge on our Penthouse level and completely renovated our Canadian Pacific corporate boardroom. We are very excited about our newly renovated product and anticipate a fully-refurbished hotel by 2012.

We sincerely appreciate your feedback and we have shared your concerns with the appropriate teams. We look forward to the opportunity of becoming your usual hotel in Calgary.

Best Regards,

Frédéric Paré

I enjoy staying at Fairmont hotels, and 10 minutes in the Palliser is all it takes to appreciate why. This is one of the old grand CP Rail hotels, built at the turn of the century and impeccably maintained since. It's beyond spotless - I don't want to say you could eat off the lobby floor but that isn't far off. You couldn't find a speck of dust if you tried.

Check-in was very quick and convenient, but before hurrying up to the room one must pause and soak in the elegance of the grand lobby. It is easy to envision first class travelers here during the Roaring 20s, crossing Canada in grand style. The term 'stunning' doesn't quite do justice.

The room was very typical Fairmont - beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable bed, high speed WiFi, big TV, big windows with spectacular views of the downtown with the mountains looming in the distance. The room appears to have been renovated within the previous year or two, as everything looked new and perfect. Turn-down service in the evening was appreciated - including the mint chocolates left on the nightstand.

Check-out was also very quick and easy. I did not eat in the hotel restaurant, but would imagine it to be wonderful. It certainly looks the part.

The Palliser is a great hotel that's centrally located in downtown Calgary. Why stay anywhere else?

Room Tip: Rooms facing north or west ofer the best views. Ask for a high floor.

Check in at about 11 pm was super fast. Staff were excellent and very pleasant and professional. The standard king room was extremely clean, well appointed and spacious. Super comfy bed with duvet which I love. Had a mini bar and a great individual cup coffee maker. Lobby was beautiful as was the lounge. Lighted magnifying makeup mirror in the bathroom which had lovely bathrobes and an individual thermostat for the room. Nice toiletries. Only suggestions: we had guests and a couch or love seat would have easily fit in the room but there is only one not wonderfully comfy chair and a swivel desk chair in which to relax. We had an inner courtyard room and it was darkish. Lounge food was good with generous portions but mixed drinks super expensive. Great location near Stephen Street and shopping and restaurants. Loved our stay.

There are many fine hotels in downtown Calgary. However, the Fairmont Palliser is my hotel of choice. I stay here often (i.e. Fairmont President’s Club Platinum level), and I like the proximity to the business district and to excellent restaurants (e.g. Blink, Charcut Roast House, Murrieta’s, River Café, Rush, Earls, etc.).

In terms of the Palliser, I know what to expect, i.e. an effective and friendly check-in; a very clean, good sized and quiet room; and excellent service. This includes the reception desk people, the royal services people, the concierge team, and the in room dining people that are courteous, helpful and friendly. There is a real service focus within this hotel.

I stayed often in renovated rooms in the last 3 months and liked the new decor style. This is a very nice renovation. I went to the improved Fairmont Gold Lounge earlier this week. The lounge is very spectacular, with a modern atmosphere and large windows. The lounge is a nice place to relax or to discuss business. In terms of business meetings, I go with confidence to the Rimrock restaurant. I know that my business guests will get excellent food and service and that the ambience will be appropriate for business discussions.

Of course, I also appreciate very much the rich history of the hotel, its paintings and its architecture. I enjoy sitting down in the lobby area and imagine what guests were talking about 60 - 70 years ago in the same lobby area.

The Palliser is my hotel of choice in Calgary and an excellent hotel for business people.

I stayed here last month for a week. The room is typical for a hotel set up and size is reasonable. The hotel still maintains some of their old stuff like the mail chute seen at the lift lobby since they have been around for quite some time and i can see that they are very much proud of that and their historical background. The hotel is centrally located downtown and just a walking distance from the CBD and offices building.
