If you are going to explore downtown Calgary, do stop in to the botanic gardens on 8th avenue. It is accessed from the shopping mall via a glass elevator or escalator. You can wonder around the bright green space or pick up a snack at the food court and enjoy it beside a fountain. It is a well done attraction and a welcome respite for the downtown work force.

We were glad this display was finally open. While it was snowing and cold outside it was beautiful and warm inside.

The old gardens were a gift from the Devonian Foundation to the residents of Calgary, and the renovations have stripped away the best features. The plants once tallied 20,000 and now, number just over 10,500. Those that remain look so plastic, they had to put up warning signs so people wouldn't yank them out. There used to be an exhibition venue for local artists and a skating rink where people could get some exercise. There were waterfalls, bridges, flowers and turtles and spaces for quiet contemplation. It was warm and inviting. Now, the favoured décor is cold, extreme, creatively sterile, angular and hostile, the sort that you can find in any corporate shark tank around the world, with the same sweat-shoppy fast food outlets you can find in any strip mall — score one for local flavour. The public toilets are so well-hidden, they must cross their fingers that nobody uses the koi ponds and flower beds instead. They also shoved the kiddy park into a closet off in the corner, not that any kid under two can enjoy that badonkadonk jungle-jim anyway. But, hey! — It's right in the sightline of all those fast food restaurants, so mom and dad get to enjoy playtime with the juniors as they whine, nag and tantrum for their next junk fix. Score another for local music and dramatics! I'm so angry about this.

The Devonian gardens are very nice to visit. Lots of plants and fish in the garden. Couldn't say that it got better after the renovation though. It can get busy here during lunch hour. Overall recommend visiting the garden.

I visited a friend who works in the TD Square mall, and I happened to stumble into this oasis after... I grabbed a wrap at the other end of the gardens and dove right back in to enjoy the running water, the over-abundance of trees, and the quiet that come with so few people enjoying the same... I LOVE IT
