“Poor value”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

I may be out of touch with the cost of hotel rooms in Calgary but to spend $190 for one night in a second rate hotel seems too high to me.
I arrived at 11:00pm after car trouble forced me off the road for the night. It took at least 15 minutes for me to check in.
The light switch to the room was behind the door and that was an inconvenience and frustrating. The bathroom was minuscule but adequate.
I had a poor night's sleep because the only covering on the bed was a heavy duvet, which medically assisted dying me too hot, but without it I was too cold.
The room was OK and quite large and it was very quiet.
A hot breakfast was included in the price.
I would try a different place to stay in Motel Village if ever I am back that way.

I am great full that the Management responded to the 'rat' complaint! I have styled here once already for an extended stay, was a great stay, good room, clean, free parking, good breakfast! Great option when on the road! Hope the coffee is good when I visit again! Nice open concept overlooking pool, nice little area for a drink or food! Friendly staff, great location! Mall just down the street not too big, with Safeway, small shops and all the things you might need on an extended stay! Outdoor balconies great, nice to have this option! This is called by locals motel/hotel village! This hotel is great if travelling with children, good pool! Great for all ages! Central for touring Calgary! Lots too check out!

Room Tip: All are great as Elevator! With children lower down close too pool! I liked higher up, as not a pool...

We stayed one night and found the rooms very nice clean and in good repair. The C Train station is very close which made it quick and easy for getting to the hockey game. We had a drink in the lounge which is nice and we saw several people eating but did not have time to eat, everything coming out looked great. I wish they stayed open later it closed before we got back at 10:30 pm. We had coupons for breakfast buffet and it was excellent not just muffins and fruit but a full breakfast.
Underground parking was at $10 or you could park outside for free. There is a nice pool and it was being used by several people.
Will stay there again.

My family's only complaint is the horrible coffee in the morning with the complimentary breakfast. The rooms are clean and well appointed. I liked the large television sets in the room. The WFI is very fast and easy to connect to. Bath room was very clean and was cleaned daily.

Stayed here for work, would not recommend the hotel due to two reasons.

The rooms were old and tired and the washroom was not clean, and the receptionist at the front desk was not at all helpful or attentive to the guests.

Need some etiquette.

My family stayed here for the location's convenience to Calgarys university and hospital but we didn't even make it after the first night of our 1 week stay. Other reviewers are correct in saying this hotel's location is the only thing they have going for them, however there's also plenty of other options in the same area, just don't stay here!

In the first evening, we discovered a black rat running out from under the bed into the living area and we complained immediately to the front desk. They changed our room from the 3rd floor to the 5th however the rest of the evening was a bad sleep and worry of running rats. The next day, we complained to the front desk to get our nights stay reimbursed and a terrible front desk woman kept ignoring our complaint and treated my family extremely negatively, talking over us and stating she was not aware of last nights situation as she just started her shift. This was ignorant and definitely NOT what customer service should be at any hotel. She kept sending us to housekeeping to check the room and reluctantly gave us the hotel managers info.

The rat infestation, coupled with the worst front desk staff possible will prevent me front staying at any future Best Westerns again.

Dear Jctravelasia,

Please accept my sincerest and deepest apologizes for your poor experience. I am stunned after reading the details of your stay in our hotel. It definitely not acceptable in our hotel’s service standards to leave a guest feeling ignored when they inform our staff of a potentially severe problem.

Rat sightings are a very serious matter in Alberta. The province considers itself rat-free and high measures are taken to ensure this statement remains true. It is to the extreme that pet rats are actually illegal in our province. Our hotel’s policy is to immediately place a room out of service and inspected by a professional pest control company when we receive a reports of a suspected rat or any other pests. Rats and pests are very unwelcome here and we intend to keep it that way.

We do have many competitors and believe we are one of the leading hotels in Calgary’s northwest. Not only because of our location, but because we strive to deliver exceptional service. I am very sorry we failed in resolving your concerns before your departure. Please contact me and I will be happy to reimburse your stay. At our hotel, and at any other Best Western, you do “stay with people who care”.

Thank you for sharing your experience on Tripadvisor.

Sincerely,
Ryan Ocbina

Close to the University of Calgary and restaurants, the hotel has a lovely pool and a hot tub. The restaurant had a good buffet breakfast with lots of food choices and good coffee. The people on the desk were cheery and incredibly helpful. The business suite allows free color printing.
