During a recent trip to Calgary I decided to check out Hotel Alma. The service from the front desk was below average, the workers did not have knowledge of the area or the services provided on the campus. Upon going to the room it was much smaller than expected, the bed takes up most of the space and you have to be careful not to hit your legs on the edges when moving around. Breakfast was included however the selection was poor. The best part of the stay was the service provided by a lovely room attendant named Miranda. She was very professional, courteous, and did an excellent job on the room. It's nice to see Hotel Alma employing the young aboriginal population.

Room Tip: Book a suite not a standard room

Hello BusinessLady500,

We truly regret that your stay was less than satisfactory. Your comments are valued and allow us to address concerns with service and quality. You have identified that there are some training gaps at the Front Desk and we assure you this has been addressed. We have shared your comments with the Bistro Alma as they are continually looking to improve their offerings and service. Thank you for your positive feedback about the service you received from your Room Attendant. Your comments have been passed along to Miranda. We hope you will give us a second chance to exceed your expectations.

The hotel is located on the University of Calgary campus next to the student residences. The rooms are generally quiet with the window closed. The room for 2 people was small (about 10' x 12') with an attached private washroom. The bed occupied most of the space and despite the large windows, the room had a tight claustrophobic feel to it. And sleeping on the bed was only a bit better than sleeping on the floor--the bed was really that hard.

The hotel offers truly high speed internet (it is on a university campus, after all), air conditioning, TV, desk, microwave, and small fridge. All of these amenities were functional. Parking costs extra. Breakfast was included in the price of the stay and the restaurant served up a continental breakfast every day.

The washroom had all the standard things one would expect except it had an oval shaped sink that was unusually shallow. Using the sink was either annoying or amusing depending on one's mood. Water splashing from the sink onto one's clothing was a common occurrence and brushing your teeth and watching things slowly slithering towards the drain at the far end of the sink was a bit surreal. The bizarre choice of sink aside, overall the hotel is OK for the price and location and the quietness is a definite plus (although this may change at different times during the school year). It is a very clean hotel that has a feel of a somewhat cheap business hotel with guests generally being a bit more upscale as well.

booked a suite and was happy with the rate, considering it was the first weekend of Stampede. Had high hopes as it was for a special occassion. Our suite was so hot and reached 29 degrees shortly after we checked in. I calledthe front desk and they sent a maintenance person who was very pleasant but not helpful. He said to send someone up again if things didnt change by the time we went out for dinner. We did ask the front desk again to send someone, and when we arriaved back later that night, the room was still the same temperature.

We woke up to back up beepers on a truck outside the front of the hotel around 6am and it just kept coming back over and over again. We went for breakfast, and they were having a tough day at the restaurant. Everything was out.... no cofffee, no plates, no clean tables, only some bread to make toast. couldn't even find a knife to spread butter. no napkins. staff were frustrated and I felt bad for them.

Overall very dissappointing, but sad because the place has lots of potential.

Good afternoon mK653,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on Trip Advisor. It is our aim to provide our guests with the utmost level of service and learning of your dissatisfaction with your stay was extremely disheartening. As you will recall, the weekend you stayed with us in early July was a very hot one in Calgary. It was to our complete misfortune that this was also a weekend we experienced complications with our air conditioning system in a few rooms located on your floor. Our maintenance team did work diligently to try and reach a rapid solution to these issues and we apologize that one was not realized during your stay. That being said, we would have been more than willing to relocate you to another room should you have contacted us when you arrived to your room after dinner and found it as unbearable as you stated above.

Our hotel is located on the University of Calgary campus and although we work diligently to ensure a pleasant level of noise within the hotel, we have limited ability to control outside noises, including vehicular traffic.

I do apologize for the state you found our bistro in on the morning you checked out. Our staff and kitchen are equipped to handle large numbers at breakfast and we will do a follow up with the bistro management team as to why there was an issue in maintaining an acceptable level of service during a busy morning.

Once again I apologize that your stay with us here at Hotel Alma was less than satisfactory. We would welcome the opportunity to wow you in the future and demonstrate the level of service typical of guest stays at Hotel Alma.

The Summer Residence at Hotel Alma was exactly what I need in a hotel. Clean and bright with a bathroom and kitchenette with Fridge, Microwave and Sink shared by two compact (but fuly functional) bedrooms. The free internet access and long distance phone calls was a bonus.
If you have business at the University of Calgary, this is the place to stay, and if there are two of you to share the already very reasonable cost, even better. There are water glasses and mugs in the room but crockey and cutlery (for having breakfast as I did) are unfortunately not provided.

Room was small; baseboard around bottom of bed is an accident waiting to happen. Room wasn't totally cleaned and fixed up on one day. Breakfast that came with room was nice, but was the same every day.
