Owner description: Every July, millions of people come to Calgary's Stampede Park to take part in one of the world's largest rodeos and other popular activities such as chuckwagon racing and agricultural shows. The event's origins date back to 1912, when American Guy Weadick, a successful trick roper, got support to host an event called "Stampede" to celebrate the "disappearing" Old West. Since then, the event has grown drastically and has evolved into a celebration of the Old West, while reflecting the modern, multicultural aspects of the city.

If it's rodeo you like or chuck wagon races, or exhibits, or a midway, or musical entertainment, then you must experience the Calgary Stampede. Starts with a great parade and runs for 10 days in July.

You have got to hit the rodeo! It is the most fun you can have with your boots on. The chucks (chuck wagon) races are legendary. I don't recommend trying to do both in one day though! If you are here for the first friday of July then you'll have to check out the parade. Don't miss out on the food at the stampede either, it's not good for you but it's damn good!

The Calgary stampede starts on the first Friday of July with a parade and it lasts for 10 days. If you come, plan to go to the parade. It's getting better and better every year. There's free pancake breakfast everywhere in the city during the 10 days. Should figure out where the good ones are! The one at Carriage House in the south is pretty good. They are very generous with their food and there are line dancers to entertain you. You can go to the rodeo, chuck wagon races, grand stand shows, ... a lot of "cowboy" stuff at the Stampede Park. As well, there's the midway with a kid's area and a lot of cowboy related stuff for the kids to do, and then there's the beer garden usually with a long line up and of course, the rides in the midway. If you are not crazy about the rides, there are still plenty to do inside the park, concerts or shows at the Coca Cola stage, shopping, etc. Also, check out what day is family day, seniors day etc. On family day, your whole family can enter the park for free if you arrive before a certain time and there is free pancake breakfast as well.
There are a lot of concerts during Stampede in Calgary. You can check out the website to find out who's coming. In addition to all that, there are PARTIES in bars & restaurants everywhere. They would set up tents to accommodate more people. There is always a long line up to get in the venues. You can do a "bar hop". They take you in a bus and they take you to different bars in the city.
It's fun at the Stampede!!!! There is a reason why they call Stampede "The greatest outdoor show on earth"!!

Bottom line, if you've never been to a rodeo, this is one of the biggest and best so worth taking in if you'd like to see one. One thing worth going to, rodeo aside, are the chuck wagon races and the Grandstand show that follows. The midway on the other hand is entirely average and no bargain either. Lots of other activities in town outside the Stampede grounds but they focus heavily on whooping it up, fun if you're single but once you're through that stage of life it looses its appeal rapidly.

And it really is, the rodeo and chuckwagon races anyways.
They have the best cowboys and animals on the planet and they treat both very well. Calgary has been doing this for a lot of years and it shows. They are highly organized and its a visual smorgasbord of sights and sounds.
The rest of the Stampede has been done by many cities, a midway, exhibits etc. but its the rodeo and chuck races that sets this event apart.
Hint, buy your tickets early and try for the final Sat. or Sun. to see the best of the best. Also, there is a canopy covering the top tier, handy in case of rain.
