“Elegant hotel with charming staff”
Reviewed October 1, 2011

We stayed at Lake Louise as part of our Journey through the Clouds Discovery Drive tour of the Rockies. Everything was organised through the Rocky Mountainner and they booked us into Fairmont hotels for the whole tour and where available on Gold Floors. The tour was excellent and we received good service from start to finish.
Lake Louise was our favourite hotel, mainly because of the excellent service and utterly charming staff on the Gold Floor. Prior to our departure from the UK, Stu, one of the Gold Floor conceirges sent me menus of the hotels restaurants so he could make reservations for us. This was very helpful.
We arrived around 9.30pm at the hotel after a long drive from Jasper down the Icefields Parkway where we had stopped at several of the spectacular sights along route. We were tired and hungry but didn't want a formal dinner.
Stu was waiting on the gold floor to greet us and take us to our room which was gorgeous. I think it was in the turret and was large and spacious with a huge bathroom and a view of the lake. Stu suggested we eat in the Glacier Saloon.
The meal was just what we wanted - a large plate of nachos and an excellent bottle of reasonably priced wine. The service was very good indeed and we relaxed and enjoyed a casual late dinner.
The next night we ate in the Walliser Stube. The service was good and the food imaginative and of a very good quality.
The hotel has some lovely features, such as the brass letter boxes by the lifts and some grand rooms. Unlike the Banff Springs it was a large hotel which had managed to retain a aire of luxury about it.
Special mention has to be made of Isabella and her staff on the Gold Floor. They really were wonderful. Very helpful and attentive and genuinely wanted to make our stay special for us.

Chateau Lake Louise is a really luxurious romantic hotel with charming staff. We definately will be back.

Room Tip: A room with a view is a must. If your budget is limited economise on other aspects of your holiday b...

The only problems with this place is that you are held captive and meals are EXPENSIVE!!... and also, they really kill you with the parking charges. Other than that, the rooms are beautiful with incredible views. The staff everywhere was very nice. The restaurants including the Pub downstairs were really nice. Canoeing during the high winds was exciting. The hiking trails around the lake are nicely done. Really, this place is beautiful..and nice, with very little to complain about....but it is a little annoyingly expensive.

Yes, it is indeed expensive to stay here. But, if you want to splurge and stay here, you have to pay the extra $100 or so and get a lake view room. I know what people say: you only stay in there to sleep, so why bother. True, but the view when you wake up in the morning is truly amazing. You can't imagine. It really isn't the same if you have to get dressed, then take the elevators, then go outside. Seeing the lake in all it's beauty from the comforts of your own private room (and pajamas) is awesome.

Valet
I've never done valet before, but was quite impressed with their service. I still find it strange that they have to wear their 'uniforms' (reminded me of Sound of Music), but they were friendly. I had a reservation, and they knew that because they have a list of all guests checking in that day. I thought that was nice touch. It is quite expensive: $35 for valet, and $25 for self park. Again, if you're staying there anyway, you might as well splurge.

Lobby
Wow, what a first impression. Great chandelier, artwork, couches. Not too many people in the afternoon, but busy enough.

Check In
Very quick and efficient. Friendly service.

Rooms
Very nice. I wouldn't say spectacular, but nice. Comfortable enough. Not ultra modern decor, but hey, you're staying in a chateau that's been around since the 1890's (I believe). The decor is very suiting to the grandeur of the hotel. Nice flat screen tv though. The window hinge was broken, and the screen a bit tattered. Oh well. The room does get a bit stuffy, no AC. The bathroom was ample in size. My recommendation is to close the blinds when you leave the room to keep the sun out. But what a view! We were on the 'first' floor (technically the second) and we had a great view of the lake.

Beds
Pretty good. no complaints. Fairmont pillows are great!

Surroundings
What a great walk around the lake. Definitely get there early in the morning to beat the crowds of tourists. It's very serene. You can rent a canoe, but pricey ($45 per hour). About 40 minute drive to Banff. Loved the harpist playing every morning in the lobby. And yes, there are a lot of tour bus people staying at the hotel. The hotel is so large that you can escape from them if you wanted to. You're about 2 1/2 hours drive away from the Columbian Ice fields. Really neat to see, cold though. You're only on the glacier for 20 minutes, but well worth it. The drive there is very scenic, take your time!

Restaurants
We ate at the Saloon since it was open late. The food was decent, again a bit expensive. Prime rib was $38. Lots of TVs to watch sports, and a pool table. We also ate at the restaurant (forgot the name) downstairs for breakfast. Very nice buffet breakfast till 10 am. For $28, you get a great selection of fresh fruit, lots of hot dishes, an omelette station, and nice cheese selection. The a la carte dishes will run you about $20 anyway.

Tip
Sign up for FREE for the Fairmont Presidents Club. You get FREE internet.

Overall
Great hotel. Solid 4.5 stars. Splurge for the lake view, you won't regret it.

We were on a Tauck Tour and assigned to the fifth floor with a lake view. As others have noted, those rooms are extremely small and ours was not air conditioned. It was 80 degrees that day.
However, what was most disturbing was the condition of the room: the tub was poorly caulked and had mold; the carpet was badly stained in multiple places; the white ceiling fan blades were black with dirt; and the wall paper was ripped! The elevators were outside our door, and the table, artwork and mirror was so dusty someone wrote: "Dust Me" on the table! Totally unacceptable. If you read the "bad" reviews of this place, you'll see there are problems AND complaints don't get you very far. I am sure, from all the good reviews, that there are good rooms so, my advice: check the room out and if there are any problems, request a different room until you get one worth the money you are paying.

We decided for our "trip of a life time" to book a "corner view" room. It cost us a bomb compared to the standard rooms on offer for 2 nights. When we tried to check in, the lovely girl on the supposed "express line for Fairmont Members line" explain our room wasnt ready & someone would call us. We waited - of course in the bar, paying outreagous prices for a glass of wine only to watch bus loads get shown to their rooms AFTER US. I rejoined the "express" line for 1/2 an hour!!!! to be told it was now ready - thanks for the call??. While I was in the line a lady joined quite a while after me & I told her it would be better to join the general line & she did & she was served before me!!!!! Our View room was so badly designed it was a joke - nowhere in the room could you sit (except perched on 1 part of the bed) & get a nice view of the lake. Whoever decided on the windows was an idiot!!!!! The double frame across sat right across your view so all you saw was frame or sky from the chairs ANYWHERE you placed them. I had such nice thoughts of sitting by the windows & my husband & I sharing a nice bottle of wine & enjoying the view.... we tried, we both had to perch on the bed & pull the table over to hold the wine....wow how romantic & so worth the price NOT!! Adding problems, it was so hot weather wise & the sun poured in this room so uncomfortably we wouldnt have sat there if we COULD see the view! They are only interested in looking after the bus loads and as far as being Fairmont members - a total joke in this place, Banff is so superior

Room Tip: Dont pay extra for a view - you dont get it!!!

I could have stayed there.Instead we only stopped for coffee. The views from the hotel were priceless. The staff were very friendly and efficent. It was a little more expensive than I'd been used to, BUT it was well worth the money. A great location to get married.

We stayed at the Fairmont becuase of the reviews. It was definatly worth the money. This was our first time going through Banff and Jasper so we decided to stay. We were on a motorcycle and thought that we would be treated a bit different when we checked in becuase we had been on the road all day and it was hot so we were not very fresh. However we were treated with respect and courtisy. Service was excellent although the food was expensive.
