“room very small”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

My husband and I wanted to stay near lake louise and didn't want to spend as much money as it would have cost us to stay at the Fairmont. The breakfast at Deer Lodge was great and we enjoyed a dinner there. The rooms are very tiny and the bed was a double which is small for the two of us since my husband is over 6 feet. We were within walking distance of Lake Louise which was very nice. We stayed 3 nights and did day trips from there which was convenient.

We stayed one night after driving from Kelowna on our way home to Calgary. I've always wanted to stay near the lake so I took this opportunity to do so.

Our first impression:

An interesting situation that occurred to us when we were checking in was witnessing three different couples have issues with their booking or the room they booked was not the room they had in the reservation. We were able to avoid all that mess but it didn't help our first impression of the place. Then we met a couple in the hallway exiting a room and they asked if it was our room. Luckily it wasn't ours. They were given keys to a room that was already being used. It didn't seem that the first couple was in there so they just left and returned to the front desk. That was pretty weird and I bit scary to think someone could just walk in to your room.

Pros: Location, staff was friendly, our room was more modern than what I've read from other reviews (I believe mine was a 'Heritage Room') so the decore was nice, bathroom was renovated with modern fixtures, wifi actually worked really well for us - even able to watch youtube videos

Cons: Beds too firm (I like firm...but this was like a floor), justified their old plumbing system by calling it 'charming', room door was old and you had to pull hard to make sure it closed, we had no cash so we couldn't use the snack or pop machines and they don't have an ATM on site, hallways could be described as creepy (dark brown walls...old lighting fixtures), no AC but it was cool at night so we were luckily comfortable, No TV, we could hear everyone who was outside our room and sometimes in the room next to us.

I would sum up our stay as 'fine'. It is definitely overpriced but it's only one of two hotels within walking distance of Lake Louise so it's going to happen. I know they are selling this rustic lifestyle which is what some people like but it verges towards being run down and shabby - not charming! if you are going to charge over $200/night provide actual amenities.

Room Tip: Bring extra snacks and drinks if you don't like going to the restaurants because the village is...

For starters, it's location is excellent being just 5 mins away from Lake Louise, on foot. During the high season, the road, leading up to the lake gets pretty crowded and parking spaces vanish rapidly, so this close proximity turns out to be a great advantage as you can just park your car at the hotel and simply walk up to the Lake. The staff at the reception wasn't very warm, to say the least, but few of the others seemed nicer. This hotel isn't small and has quite many wonderful and old fashioned (in a nice way) utility rooms here and there, which kind of leave you pleasantly surprised when you suddenly walk into one of them. The living rooms though weren't satisfactory considering it's tiny size, having spent almost $200/night. But I guess the price was fair enough considering the hotel's excellent location. They also offer Packed 'hiker's lunch box' but you can give it a miss unless really required. So, if you need a relatively cheap place to stay close to lake Louise, this is definitely a good option.

My husband and I spent 3 nights here. The location was great -- within walking distance of Lake Louise and its hiking trails, and just a short drive down to the Village of Lake Louise. We chose the least expensive double room to stay within our budget. It had a comfortable bed, was actually fairly large, and had a great view of Mt. Victoria and its glacier. This is a historic property, with older plumbing that can go from warm to icy to very hot quite suddenly. The hotel actually posts warnings about this in the bathroom. That was really the only drawback, in my opinion. There is no elevator, but help with luggage is available if needed. We ate quite a few meals in the hotel restaurant, and although it was on the pricey side, the food was consistently excellent, and service was friendly. We used the rooftop hot tub, which does have a wonderful view and seemed well-maintained.

Room Tip: Room 227 had a great view, although it is in the "historic" wing of the hotel.

I was caught out during the recent floods and I have to thank the manager for offering me a complimentary night's stay. Many thanks too to staff member Ben who drove me to Banff early in the morning to catch a bus to Calgary airport. I thought the lodge had a lot of character. Lovely food at the restaurant as well.

We arrived at Deer Lodge at 2.30 am after having to take a long detour from Jasper as the highway was cut due to flooding. We phoned ahead to advise that we would not arrive until 1.30 - 2.30 am and were told that this would not be a problem and we would be expected. When we arrived the night auditor was asleep because of a blackout and was unaware of our arrival. We were then given a key to a room only to find someone else asleep in bed. Apart from this little mishap we loved the comfortable beds, the beautiful view from the balcony and the 'quaint' sitting rooms. There were also grizzly cubs playing on the side of the road between Deer Lodge & the next resort On the down side, the two girls on reception the next morning were unhelpful and ignored anyone until they had finished their personal conversation - despite this, Deer Lodge is definitely one hotel experience that we will remember and we would stay again if we ever get the opportunity

Room Tip: The room we were in faced the road, had a beautiful view of the mountains, was in good condition &am...

We stayed here for 2 days, location of the hotel is superb surrounded by beautiful views and only 5 minutes from Lake Louise. The hotel is styled with old wood panels and has a tremendous amount of character. Food was excellent and the restaurant staff were friendly and attentive. The reception staff appeared to have a couldn't care less attitude. For example we had a safe in our room which wasn't working. It looked like it needed a battery. ( If I had an allen key I could have fixed it myself!) We reported to reception and they said some work and some don't and that was the end of it, she didn't offer to get someone to look at it. We also asked if they could cash a travellers cheque and she refused. Bizarrely we went on 6km walk to a remote tea house near the 6 glaciers where they had no elelctricity and cooked on wood burining stoves and they accepted them without question! These are only minor niggles but the attitude of the young girls on reception were not helpful and it tarnishes the opinion ; Some guest may never encounter these irratations and therfore may rate the hotel higher.

In Summary an average hotel with a bit of cusotmer care training for the reception staff and it could be a great hotel
