We stayed at Deer Lodge in April and found the experience just wonderful. Staff were very attentive and service was second to none. Room was warm and inviting and not to have the distraction of a tv was wonderful and added to our relaxing holiday. The views each day were breathtaking and ever changing. Would recommend highly.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor are quite and have wonderful views

This lodge is great - admittedly the rooms themselves aren't anything special but the lodge is, the animal heads coming out from the walls & the old wooden lodge itself are great surroundings - so is the restaurant/bar - best of all is the huge spa on the roof with great views - bliss! It is a few minutes walk from the Lake too - def stay again!

We were booked into a Tower room which would have been fine but we decided to upgrade to a Heritage room which had a fabulous king sized bed, great view of the mountains and a balcony. They upgraded us for a small fee. (I've found when travelling, if you are unhappy with your room, just ask and usually the hotel will do something). The tower room was smaller with a queen sized bed and a view of mountains, it would have been fine for 2 days or so but we were there for 5 so we splurged and enjoyed the additional space. Our Heritage room was recently refurbished I think. People should realise that this Lodge is about 100 years old. I think some of the people unhappy with the place were expecting brand new Westin / Starwood hotel finishes and feel. If you want this, you should book into a brand new Westin Hotel. What you get at Deer Lodge is a (very clean) charming character filled hotel, with a great lounge with leather 'grandfather chairs' a roaring fire and piano. Anyone can play the piano and twice during our stay a young man did impromptu performances which perfectly complemented the cosy but elegant atmosphere with people sipping red wine by the fire. Downstairs there is a big pool table and TV. The restaurant is excellent, the food is delicious, though a little expensive. There is a slightly cheaper food area adjacent to the restaurant near the bar which was a great place to have our nightly cocktail. The Chateau Fairmont is a few hundred meters up the road, so you could go up there, which we did for dinner one night, but you pay slightly more of course. (I'm really glad we didn't stay there, it has no charm whatsoever and is overrun with sightseers). The hot tub was super hot, maybe too hot. I think this place gets the bad reviews because people choose the cheapest double rooms, which don't sound too great. I don't know I didn't see one. I did see the tower rooms and Heritage and they were both very good and worth the money we paid. The manager Paul was very accommodating and professional. We will be back... one day!!

Room Tip: If you are a little discerning about rooms do not book the cheapest double rooms. The tower rooms a...

I would like to express my thanks for sharing your comments and you certainly have encapsulated all that Deer Lodge is about. We do celebrate our 90th anniversary this year and enjoy providing our guests with a more traditional experience that embraces the history of Deer Lodge and Lake Louise. I am very glad that you enjoyed your recent stay with us and look forward to welcoming you back.

Sincerely

Apparently we were upgraded?? to a tower room, this was very small and dark and as there is no lift we had to drag cases up 2 flights of stairs. Dinner was very good but that was the only good experience in this hotel. There is a nice lounge area with a fire but we couldn't use it because of a private function (I don't think hotels should do this) and to make matters worse this was directly below our room and there can't be any insulation as we could even hear individual conversations! But is was the noisy plumbing that really did it, bang, bang, BANG every couple of minutes, we had to beg for a room change at midnight! The hot tub didn't work and whole place could do with a dam good clean. Won't be going back.

My daughter and I needed a place to stay for a night while we attended an event at the Chateau Lake Louise. The Deer Lodge is a very short walk to the Chateau Lake Louise and the lake itself and was so much cheaper. Yes it's old and a 'no frills' experience, but the rooms are clean and, at the end of the day, it's about the location. Breakfast was tasty and enjoyed a soak in the roof top hot tub. I would definitely stay there again.

A ‘double’ room here is very small – barely room for twin or double beds, no tables or chairs. The ancient heating system can make rooms hot and stuffy, at least until one pries open the window and learns how to shut off the radiator. As well, there are ‘scald warning’ signs on taps, so one must be careful when washing or bathing. Feather pillows and down comforters were hardly necessary given the over-active heating system, but if you are allergic to bird feathers, be sure to request hypoallergenic alternatives.

The common rooms retain the rustic charm of another era and the restaurant fare was good although the service was slow. In future, I would return for a cup of coffee or a beer, but not an over-night stay. If you book, be prepared for noise from the nearby highway, and from guests on floors above you.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back side of the lodge might be quieter as one is unlikely to hear traffic heading up a...

This does have a lovely rustic old fashioned charm. However, the room (upgraded), was small. No TV, no coffee maker. If you are on the short side you might need a step up to the very high bed!
We were on the first floor with no lift, luckily my husband could manage to carry the suite case up the stairs.
There was a lovely lounge with huge gas fire. We decided not to eat but the menu looked good. We did, however, have a drink. 1 glass wine & 1 beer $20!
I wouldn't choose this one again, not value for money in my opinion.
