“Looks good on the outside but not worth a stay”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

Two of us from Calgary stayed at Deer Lodge last weekend. We booked a double bed room for a special rate but in retrospect, it wasn't good value even at that rate. The room was so small that there was hardly any walking space around the bed. It was sparsely furnished with one dresser and a night table, not even a chair to sit on! It is obvious when a hotel is penny pinching and cutting corners to the guests' detriment. The overhead light was so dim and made the walls look a sickly green. The bathroom was also small and had no fan so the room steamed up like a sauna after our showers. Don't be fooled by the lure of a rooftop jacuzzi. The "jacuzzi' has no jets and the water temperature was lukewarm. I stayed in there a total of 5 minutes! I asked the reception whether the jacuzzi was turned on to which they replied it was but their jacuzzi doesn't have jets. I wonder why they call it a jacuzzi then? Reception seemed defensive toward any questions/comments made by guests, and unwelcoming. This is definitely not the level of hospitality that should be offered for the rates they charge. Big disappointment! There are better places to stay.

There was a horror movie filmed at the Deer Lodge and when walking down the dimly lit corridors of the lodge, it's hard to believe the film was fiction. As we walked down the labyrinth hallways and stairs, the place reeked of decay. The lodge was built in 1919 and you would be hard pressed to find any evidence of improvements made since that period.

Literally every thing about this place is creepy. Everything is poorly lit - likely to hide the horrors lurking in the corners. The room we had was partially under a stairwell and 100 square feet of dirt and stains. The floors buckled underneath each step and the ceiling creaked eerily as other patrons (or perhaps ghosts) moved about above us.

The hot tub does indeed have fantastic views, but you'll need the courage only a stiff drink can bring to brave the narrow stairway leading to the roof.

The restaurant was tired and dingy. Even broad daylight couldn't stop the tingle of dread creep up my spine as we sat down to eat. The food itself seemed to have been made at the same time as the hotel was build, and somehow kept in a (mostly) undead state ever since.

We ended up complaining about our room and were upgraded to a room in the new wing. This room was the one shown in the booking pictures and was definitely warm and cozy. However it was hard to shake the feeling of unease knowing that not 100 feet away, real people were being subjected to he terror if the "old wing" of the lodge. The front desk upgraded us so quickly that it seems like that is a very common and expected practice now. Seduce an unsuspecting tourist with nice pictures, then lock them in a 100 square foot cell and hope they don't complain. And if they do, quickly offer an upgrade.

So if you're unlucky enough to stay at the deer lodge, make sure to stay in one of the new rooms. And if you're in an old room... I pray for your soul.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Deer Lodge. We would like to apologize that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We would like to assure guests that all food we serve on property is fresh, with majority of the game coming from our own farm just outside of Calgary. We would encourage guests to speak to a hotel representative when booking your room to ensure the room booked does meet your needs. We do have a variety of room categories at the lodge ranging from our standard Lodge room to our upgraded Heritage Rooms.
Many Thanks and Kind Regards,

Our first impression of Deer Lodge was good,it is a very quaint old fashioned place,a little bit stuck in the past. The lounge has a lovely fireplace and inviting seating, the restaurant is very light and airy, not particularly cosy though,on a chilly morning.
We had asked for a quiet room, I had booked a triple as we could not get a twin ,the room size was good ,and quiet being at the end of a corridor, and on the top floor. However we could hear loud conversations across the hall, all went quiet by 11pm, so was not a problem. The room itself was very drab, and in need of refurbishment, better lighting and curtains,to make it more homely. We discovered we could turn the ancient radiators up and they quickly warmed the room. The beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was tiny and the plumbing strange.Breakfast buffet was good.
The location is great, and you can go to Lake Louise when it is quiet,it is a beautiful place. We paid a fair price similar to the village hotels, and it included breakfast. The location made it memorable.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor.

My family and I visited over the Thanksgiving weekend for only one night.
The hotel is dated and has room for improvement, but I knew what to expect, and took it in stride. We had the "adjoining room" on the main floor, facing the main road. The room was small, but comfortable. As previous reviewer have said, there are creaky floors and vehicle traffic can be bothersome, but in the evening when you actually return to the room, it is peaceful. The smell of the trees and the white noise of the Louise creek provided a restful sleep. The hotel was occupied with a wedding party in the restaurant. The party consisted of 50% of the hotel guests. This concerned me. It was noisy at first, but quiet after 10:00, shy of the odd couple returning to their rooms.
The hotel has amenities to entertain. A games room with pool table and satellite TV, different seating areas to enjoy a drink or book in front of the fire, the hot tub on the roof provides spectacular views, and all within a 5 minute walk to the lake or chateau.

Personally, I liked the rustic charm of the lodge. A welcome change to the sound proof redundancy of a hotel chain.

Room Tip: Heritage rooms provided more space, and a tendancy for less noise

The location of the hotel is just behind the Fairmont and a very short walk to the lake. We stayed in the more recently renovated section. The rooms were small and a bit quaint but overall not too bad. The reason I say I have mixed feelings is that in retrospect I wished I had popper for the extra money to stay in the Fairmont. However, if that is not an option then this is the only other hotel (I believe) with easy walking distance of the lake and thus a good option.

An interesting old building conveniently situated five minutes walk from the lake. Unless you are happy to upgrade to rooms in the 'newer' block be prepared, however, for a noisy night. Our first room we rejected as there was an ice-making machine in the corridor outside that ran all night. We were then shown another room that we were assured was totally quiet but, on inspection, had a fan from the hotel's storeroom right outside the window. The third room, which we stayed in for one night, appeared to be ok but the hotel's heating system came on at 10.00pm and stayed on all night. Our radiator could not be turned off and so the room was sweltering and, as another reviewer has pointed out, the pipes make a clunking sound all night. We therefore upgraded at huge expense to the 'newer' block and did get two good night's sleep for the rest of our stay.

Deer Lodge was one of our favorite places to stay on our tour of the Canadian Rockies. The Deer Lodge is a historic lodge, over 90 years old, with an old-fashioned atmosphere. While our cozy room did not have a view, the dining room overlooks the Victoria Glacier on Lake Louise. Most importantly for us, it was only a 5 minute walk from the lodge to the lake and some of the best hiking trails and scenic overlooks in Banff. The only closer lodging would be the Fairmont Hotel on the Lake.
