Stayed three days. And enjoyed it all. It really is five minute walk from the lake. Attractive setting. It is an older place with the charm of an earlier day. They use real keys on the doors, heat from a central boiler, and no elevators. Walls are not as sound proof as new hotels but things settle down by nine pm and we did not lose sleep.
Ate at the lodge restaurant six times. Service was excellent and friendly with college kids. The food was very good five of the six meals and just average one time. Was always hot and well presented.

The hotel has an old quaint aspect - lots of wood, nice lounge etc. however, the whole place looks and feels like it needs some major TLC. Our room was a reasonable size and very clean, but it had no TV, no kettle and one plug socket in the bedroom which wasn't strong enough to hold in a plug. The roof hot tub was novel, but again very tired - broken lockers, broken 'on' switch, broken lights and it didnt bubble. But it was a great view of the mountain. The one night we stayed they turned off the water from midnight to 8 am for maintenance. So not good for an early start...... It is a good location for the lake, but is a short drive to the main shops and restuarants. Seems a shame that such a lovely building has not been used to its full potential.

If you don't want to (or can't) afford the Fairmont, then the Deer Lodge is the next logical choice as it is literally around the corner..

Good points go to proximity to Lake Louise, large parking space, free wifi, friendly staff .. both at the reception and the restaurant, good food... (although limited choice)

Now the bad parts: While the communal areas are old-fashioned (in a good sense) and to a certain degree, could be considered as cosy (i.e. very much "chalet"-type), the rooms were a total let-down:
- Whoever decorated them.. should be sacked ! They're absolutely not inline with the communal areas of the hotel and the best way to describe them are : They look and feel like Hospital(!) rooms.. You really want to get out of there !
- One of the poorest sound isolations I've ever encountered in an hotel.. I could hear my neighbours snorring as if they were lying next to me
- Absence of available electricity plug inside the room
- No ventilation or window at all inside the bathroom
- Being handed over a key.. nowadays, magnetics cards should be standard

Would I recommend it: Yes, if proximity is the ultimate criteria.. otherwise no !

We stayed here for just one night as we were travelling to Jasper. There aren't many choices in Lake Louise unless you have endless pots of cash and stay at a particular Hotel directly on Lake Louise. So, we stayed here and it took approx 3 minutes to walk to the Lake. Hotel was very 'hunting lodge' type. There was a room with a massive log fire that you could chill out it, lots of stuffed animal heads around. The room was comfy, had the usual amenities. The only thing that I would change was be a few broken tiles on the bathroom floor and there wasn't enough electric sockets in the room. There wasn't a tv in the room, not an issue as we were more interested in the scenery and walking around Lake Louise!! But, had a really nice feel about the room. There is a restaurant that we ate in as there isn't much choice as only one other hotel to eat at. It was very nice, staff were pleasant. For just a 1 night stay it was perfect.

If your looking for a hotel that resembles a boarding school this is it, it's dark miserable and old fashioned it even smells old! So from outside looks like its about to fall apart get inside its no better. Given a key (not a card) a big hefty brass key for our room! After lugging our heavy cases up flight after flight of stairs as there are no lifts we get o a dark corridor all with identical horride dark brown doors put key in and open up to erm.... Harry's potters room under the stairs! Seriously there was not even enough room for our cases! So bed is tiny windows falling apart no tv no radio no coffee or tea in room. Great start. Bathroom no where to put toiletries no where to put toothbrushes and the sink was prob from the 50'! The shower...this was fun... There is a grottny grey tub now I'm 5ft 3 petite and no way I could even sit in that tub pointless the shower only has one position no moving the head up or down or lowering it to suit you just one stupidly powerful blast in your face it's so powerful that it hurt my skin! Bins in bathrooms where not emptied daily. Next complimentary wifi thats great..... When it worked which was 50/50. Restauraunt so overpriced and very limited it tries to be posh and fancy but it's not. This sounds crazy but go to the fairmont saloon pub food there much better and cheaper! The hot tub looked very dirty I wouldn't go in the metal looked greasy and unclean my boyfriend went in but got out after 5mins as it felt too cold. Another couple got out for the same reason! Overall I have nothing god to say about this hotel. Other than 5min walk from lake Louise. I would not stay here again if you paid me to stay.
