“Excellent Introduction to Canadian Rockies Cuisine”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Overall perhaps just very, very good, but close to excellent considering the building, location, history, all the partying going on all around you in multiple rooms, etc. It was our first dinner after we had flown into Calgary for 8 days in the Rockies. We loved the experience and I'm pretty sure you will too. This was also our introduction to sky high prices in the entire region for lodging (we did not stay there) and classy restaurants.

“Every table deserves a bottle of wine”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

It’s been said that if there is not a bottle of wine on every table, then the wine is overpriced. I did order a bottle of wine here, but I was in a celebratory mood.

This is a fine restaurant. Diners are escorted to their tables, seated and turned over to their server for the evening. The tables are large, the seats comfortable and the place settings elegant.

Eyes are naturally drawn to the view of the mountains available through the large picture windows along one wall. The view is majestic. In the foreground is a lawn complete with croquet accouterments and strolling guests. Beyond the lawn are the mountains which rim the Bow Valley.

The server pours cool water. Diners select a couple pieces of bread from the basket. Butter and an olive tapenade accompany the bread. We were delighted by an amuse bouche from the chef as we considered the menu which contains numerous tempting dishes. We tried the mussels and the bison ribs with cheese macaroni for first courses instead of our usual salads and found them delicious. We both had the espresso crusted venison for our main dishes. These also were very good, but I found my appetite sated midway through the main dish, and I wished I had ordered a simple salad for my first course. We had no room for dessert.

As pleasant as the dinner was, the experience was not unblemished, and at these prices, diners should expect near perfection. Music would have been nice. I don’t recall there was music, so if there was, it was unmemorable. The wines were quite expensive for the quality. Many Canadian wines were available (a good thing), but I suspect all the wines were priced at triple retail costs (not a good thing). Not all tables had a bottle of wine which is a shame at any restaurant, especially one of this caliber. The lass who served our wine was a bit unsure of herself as she opened the bottle. She failed to see that she was serving the wine into the wrong glasses. She poured our merlot into smallish glasses more suitable for sauvignon blanc. Still, she was nice. Our dinner was unhurried and quite enjoyable.

The evening before we had dined at the resort's upscale Italian restaurant, Castello. There the service was on the mark. To be honest, I would favor Castello over the Bow Valley Grill.

“Good food but noisy”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

We enjoyed the food, inventive and fresh but the noise level in the room was too much for me. This is a personal choice so I won't knock them too much for it.

“I expected more”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Had dinner here to celebrate our last night in the Canadian Rockies. Was expecting more from such a famed hotel. Our glass-topped table had many smudges as well as the glasses and flatware. Service was off. Server wanted to take our dinner order immediately upon seating without taking cocktail orders. When we did order cocktails, my hub cocktail came to the table wrong TWICE. Would not have expected this at service oriented establishment. Our younger children loved the children's buffet. But the server made it clear that our 13 year old could not partake. Ordered a 1/2 chicken - which was bland. The highlight of my meal was the seafood gazpacho - difficult to eat as it is served in a cocktail glass - but delicious & memorable. My prime rib was overcooked. My hub enjoyed his steak - but was not overly impressed. Dinner w drinks, dessert & tip totaled about $350 for 3 adults & 2 children's buffets. For that price, I expect more in terms of level of service and quality. The final kicker - you have to pay for parking if you are not staying at the hotel. Would have gone elsewhere while in Banff for dinner & stopped at the hotel for a drink.
