In the weeks we spend in Banff we always look forward to eating at Suginoya. At one time there were several Japanese restaurants in the center of town, but now it seems to be the only one left. Eating out night after night for a week, one always gets overdosed with rich food - salt, sugar, oil. Only Japanese food remains satisfying and clean tasting - sappari is the word. Suginoya is a genuine Japanese restaurant, it has very helpful waiters, food is fairly prompt considering it is generally freshly prepared. Good beer, sake, shōchū, and excellent green tea rounded off a meal of tsukimi udon and selected sushi. One evening I tried the teishoku, selecting sashimi and tempura. The first was good, the second made do with some slightly odd materials - broccoli florets etc., and there was no white fish - but I suppose we are not in Japan. No arguments with the quantity, however. A large meal.
All in all, a nice reliable Japanese-style Japanese restaurant.
