“Nice scenery, terrible kitchen”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2014

We were only there from late afternoon, overnight, then left in the morning, but I wasn't particularly impressed with this place - despite the bautiful scenery. The room was ok (private room, shared bathroom), neat and clean. There's a massive walk in fridge in the kitchen which was pretty neat, but the kitchen itself was utter chaos - way too small for the number of people, and poorly laid out and poorly equipped. I struggled to even make a sandwich. Don't eat at the little bar though, shocking food that was way overpriced. All in all it wasn't a bad place to spend the night, but it does have quite a few drawbacks. I'd suggest staying in a place closer to town.

I love the cabin at the hostel. This is unique for hostels.

Wonderful location.

They have a very noisy exhaust fan on the entrance of the main building. Unfortunately you can hear the fan all night and day when you have your window open. It would be nice if they could figure out another way to exhaust air and not create noise pollution.

Great staff.

Room Tip: There are two cabins and the various dorms. Nice to have your own space in the cabin if you can affo...

Even if it's quite far from downtown, it's a nice place to stay. Quiet, clean and with differents activities. I just stayed two days so i wasn't able to participate to the ones i want, but it looks pretty nice. I was just disapointed about the breakfast, because they said it was include in hostelworld, but no, you have to pay.

My gf and I booked 3 nights here in a mixed 6 bed dorm. We were incredibly impressed with the rooms and the hostel in general.

Our room had an upstairs section with a double bed so worked out perfect as we paid for singles - very lucky indeed!

The hostel was very well layed out, looked the very stereotypical for a Rockies lodge - very cool.

The only complaint I have is that the kitchen utensils was very poor. There was to many pots or pans to cook with which made it very difficult when others were cooking - a surprising, disappointing find.

All in all it was our BEST stay yet!! (Previously stayed at HI Toronto, Edmonton, Jasper + Lake Louise). Wished we could stay for longer!

Beautiful location and really nice rooms...however I felt compelled to write a review and check out early, due to the rudeness of the staff. I think a lot if them are just too young and immature to be dealing with the clientele and know nothing about customer service. Each night we drank at the onsite bar until late (they have really cheap drinks, so obviously they want you to drink there) and we were then pretty annoyed that each morning at 9am, someone wake us up, in order to clean the damn toilet...with his own music blasting through his phone. How rude!! They really need to sort this out, it's not just an early morning invasion of privacy, but playing your own music as people are sleeping is just bloody ridiculous!

I also don't like hostels that lock you out of the kitchen, this forbidding you to eat your own food after a certain time. Felt a bit like there were too many unnecessary rules at this place. What I wanted was a relaxing hideaway in the mountains, but I just felt stressed and harassed each day.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your poor experience. Upon investigation, we did find one of our housekeeping team was doing his job while playing music through his Iphone speaker and we've made sure the whole team knows this isn't acceptable.

As for the guest kitchen, we have had numerous problems with guests who wish to enter the kitchen after returning home inebriated from the bar at midnight or later and who steal other guests' food, generate an incredible mess or almost start fires. The only way we found that we could control the situation was to have a staff member in the kitchen full-time. As we only have two staff working at night, this isn't an option and we had to put the kitchen lock-out in place. We feel it is a reasonable middle ground that meets the safety, security and comfort needs of the majority of our guests - although it does inconvenience some. My apologies.

My friend and I stayed here overnight between ski days. We checked in and then took the free transportation down into Banff. Just a heads up, they ask for a $5 deposit that you get back so make sure you have exact change! We had a great time in town but headed back to the hostel for the Thursday pool tournament where we had a really fun time playing pool, learning darts, and meeting people from all over the world. It was exactly what we were looking for. We definitely recommend this place if you're looking for an inexpensive but good quality stay in Banff.

I was staying in this place in June 2013, and it was actually great place to stay. I was travelling around North America, and stopped by at this place cuz I couldn't afford expensive hotels in downtown Banff. The location was not quite convenient, but the hostel itself was clean and relaxing. The people were very helpful. I would recommend this place if you don't really mind taking bus from downtown Banff since the place is pretty.
