Unexpected because it's not one of the most oftne mentioned hikes. Go all the way up to the top because the view is stunning.

The glaciers will be gone before we know it. This is a beautiful hike to see glaciers from many different viewjpoints. We also saw a bald eagle soaring overhead and a rainbow that displayed its myriad colors all the way through our descent.

This relatively short climb up over Parker's Ridge gives fabulous views.....and a glimpse of the receding glaciers. Even if you are not an avid hiker, go slow and steady for a big reward at the top.

When you get to the ridge it's tempting to turn right up the ridge in the hope of getting views of the Saskatchewan Glacier - don't - turn left and follow the trail down and along the far side of the ridge from where the views are stunning.

The Saskatchewan Glacier is bigger than the Athabasca (the main one you see from the road at the Glacier Centre), and IMHO in a much better setting.

In reading the reviews, some would call this strenuous and others moderate. In other words, my wife thought it was a bit of a workout uphill and I though it was a nice moderate trail with a gradual rise to the top. It's all about interpretation. Bottom line though is the great reward at the top with Saskatchewan Glacier taking over the landscape. Very scenic when looking down into the valley. Even taking your time, this should only take a couple hours round trip. It's a nice follow-up to the Columbia Icefields if heading south on the Icefields Parkway.
