“Away from crowds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We were staying here for 5 nights in August 2013. Booked "Mountain View" room, but got the 'forest” because our room wasn't ready at our check in time. I wasn't impressed but that fact, but didn't insist because knew from the other people reviews that the "Mountain View" faces the highway and can be noisy. The room was clean; you still can see some mountain. The only thing - they failed to give us 4 towels - we have 3 from the start, 5 after I asked from one more :) and, again, 3 for the rest of our stay. The Bistro was OK - we had one breakfast and one dinner - a bit pricy, great view, good food but I liked Banff restaurants better. The location of the hotel is good to the people with car and not looking for the Banff very crowded streets. We went to the Banff every day (for meals and groceries) - 4 minutes drive and always found parking. Bottom line - good hotel, clean, quiet, service could use some improvement.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your review, I appreciate your feedback. I apologise there was a mix up with your room booking and confusion over the towels. We are a small and independent hotel that experienced one of our busiest months in August and we are trying our best to keep up. However, that’s not an excuse and I’m sorry you think our service could use improvement. We are always striving to improve ourselves and will encounter obstacles along the way and feedback is always helpful.

It is nice to hear that you enjoyed the fabulous views, our more remote location and the clean and peaceful rooms.

Thanks for your stay, we hope to see you again soon.

Though just outside the city, only minutes from city centre, hotel offers good rooms and fantastic restaurant. Staff are knowledgeable about local amenities and offer good advice. Rooms clean. Good walking trails from hotel.

Room Tip: Low level hotel, good access for everyone

We booked a room in the Juniper hotel for one night as we were travelling through Banff National Park. The hotel is a short drive from the main Banff village but if you have a car then this is not an issue given that there is abundant car parking in and around the village itself. The hotel was very good value - our room had two large beds and a good sized bathroom, with a lovely view out over the mountains.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your review of our hotel. We're glad you felt it was good value with great views of the mountains.

We pride ourselves in being away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Banff but still only a few minutes drive away. I'm glad to hear you had no problems with parking downtown.

We hope to see you again soon!

My husband and I recently stayed here during our trip from Calgary to Vancouver. The staff were outstanding and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable (from the front desk staff to the dining staff and maintenance staff). We had lovely views of the mountains during our meals and felt at home at this hotel. Our room was on the parking lot side, which I was happy with, since the highway is on the other side.

Room Tip: Choose the parking lot side away from the highway for a quieter night's sleep. Choose the highwa...

We stayed in one of the cabins behind the hotel. Needs a good clean. Since i travel for business so much perhaps I am more comfortable in the more predictable environment found at larger chain hotels where they are not constrained by full employment. However, no excuse for the cleaning staff missing tens of squashed Mosquitos on the ceiling and walls, filthy jets in the tub, carpets need a visit from a steam cleaner and walls and windows could do with some elbow grease. Frankly everything needs a good hard clean as it felt like borrowing a buddies cabin versus checking into a hotel. Food was nowhere near the rave reviews from earlier, not even close ( new chef perhaps ?)
Great location, friendly and efficient desk staff, restaurant staff knowledgeable and competent and the location is very peaceful.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to bring these items to my attention.

I offer an apology for the lack of cleanliness that you experienced. We are a small, unique and independent hotel that experienced one of the busiest August months to date and we are trying our best to keep up. That is no excuse however and I can assure you the issue is already being rectified so thanks again for your bringing it to my attention. I’m also sorry to hear that the food didn't live up to the reviews of late. Sometimes despite best efforts dishes or even shifts fall short, we've had a new Executive Chef for the past 6 months who is extremely talented and a long time Banff resident with an outstanding reputation. I hope you come back and give it another try.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed the peacefulness of being away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. It’s great to hear that the staff were friendly, efficient and knowledgeable as well, I’ll pass on your positive feedback to them.

If you visit again, please let us know and we can ensure your stay goes smoothly.

Best Regards,

The Juniper GM

The hotel is renovated and it is nice. Mid size clean rooms.
Friendly and young staff. We arrived late at night and the restaurant staff welcomed us even if it has been closed 15 minutes before.
It is quite, but the last morning we where waken up by a noisy group of people that were waiting for the restaurant to open for breakfast (our room was right beside the restaurant entrance).
I'm suggesting the staff to do something to avoid that as it was very disappointing! We were on vacation and we needed to rest!

Room Tip: Avoid room 111 (beside the restaurant)

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I appreciate your feedback.

I’m sorry that you experienced noise outside your room. We operate inside a renovated building and do have some challenges with noise. We are looking into soundproofing so that your stay could be quieter in the future.

I’m glad that the restaurant staff were welcoming, the rooms were clean and you thought the hotel was nice. We hope to see you again soon!

We have stayed here on a number of occasions and recently had our wedding in this hotel on the long weekend in August. It is our favourite place to stay in Banff. The staff is wonderful - from the housekeeping staff, to the front desk staff, to the chef and wait staff at the restaurant, to the managers. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our wedding went off without a hitch and all of our guests commented on how much they loved the place.

It is definitely a simple hotel (i.e. you won't get a swimming pool or super fancy tv) but that is part of the charm. Who goes to Banff to watch TV or swim in a swimming pool anyway? The views from the hotel are spectacular. I would say they are on par with the Rimrock and the Banff Springs but at a fraction of the price and without all the day tourist traffic. Be sure to get one of the rooms with a view. I have never had any issues with the noise from the hwy trafffic and have eaten on (and got married on!) the patio which is above the highway. The Juniper has taken great care with the decoration of the hotel with interesting items of native art, old pictures and menus from the hotel and vintage postcards from Banff. The other great thing I like about the hotel is that it is secluded from the hustle and bustle of Banff but is a short walk or a cheap cab ride away from the town center if you want more action. Staying at the Juniper is more akin to staying at a lodge with great hiking trail leading out of the hotel. It is so much nicer than staying at one of the cookie cutter hotels on Banff Ave.

One of our favourite parts of the Juniper is the restaurant. I believe it is one of the best restaurants in Banff and by far has the best view. We have stopped here several times on the way back from hiking or skiing and we never fail to be impressed. The menu is creative, uses high quality and local ingredients and is reasonably priced when compared to similar options in the town. The wait staff is excellent and seem to really enjoy working there. We noticed that we had some of the same waitstaff over the dozen or so meals we ate at the restaurant over the last year which is rare in Banff as it tends to have a large staff turnover. I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the bistro and all have been delicious and thoughtfully prepared.

As far as our wedding was concerned, the day was perfect and we could not have asked for more. Our guests all loved the venue and we had a great time staying at the hotel. The staff was very helpful and were happy to meet with as many times as needed to tweak menus, assist with decorating advice or ideas and generally make our day everything we could ask for. The food was delicious and the servers made sure that all 80 of our guests basically got their meals at the same time as the head table. My husband's family is full of people in the restaurant business and accordingly are a tough crowd. They were very impressed by the food and service. It is a great place to have a mid sized (60-90 people) wedding as literally all the guests can stay at the hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view. Families may want to check out the cabins which are a little more rustic bu...
