“Very pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed May 5, 2012

I live in Calgary, which has pretty mediocre sushi. On a whim we tried sushi bistro, and we're very pleasantly surprised. Good service, very good food and cheap(for Calgary-don't expect west coast prices 1,000 km's from the nearest ocean). Overall, will come here again soon.

“Fun, fresh and great value.”

Healthier fast food, on a train.
Sushi bistro was an excellent choice for us when we wanted a quick meal that wasn't the same old junk.

“Well prepared”
Reviewed February 7, 2012

Although this is a small restaurant the servers and sushi chef are very friendly and provide good service. All of the sushi we had was very well prepared and delicious.

“Elegant and delicious"”
Reviewed December 29, 2011

My family loves sushi and we were eager to enjoy a nice sushi lunch while on holiday in Banff. We tried the Sushi Bistro for the first time as our usual haunt, the Sushi Train, is often too crowded and there were 7 of us. We were there promptly at 12 noon when it opened and took two tables in the sunny window where we could watch all the pedestrian traffic going up and down the street. The servers were lovely and welcoming and the food soon arrived after we filled in the menu sheets. Collectively, we sampled quite a bit: many types of rolls, a plate of sashimi, various nigiri, including squid, miso soup, salad. The spiced tuna roll literally melted in my mouth. All the rolls were good as was the sashimi. At $12.99 for about 6 pieces, I wasn't sure how good a deal it was, but it sure tasted good! Everything was elegantly served with wasabi and ginger arriving in their own dish. Our total bill was about $100 for five adults as the little kids didn't eat much. I think this is comparable to other sushi places and we were all completely full and happy when we left.

“Rude and greedy owner”
Reviewed November 12, 2011

On entry to the restaurant, it looked promising. There was plenty of choice in Sushi. The fish was fresh but the rice appeared to be prepared using sushi moulds instead of by hand (and they just crumbled when picked up). The Gyoza was a disappointment - baked (very "new age"). This made them hard and tasteless, not juicy and plump like they are supposed to be when pan fried.

The surprise came when we went to pay the bill. Given it was a quick lunch and the food was only so so, we didn't feel that they deserved any tips. Within a couple of minutes the owner came back and threw (I do mean threw) the bill on the table with our money and told us "our price does not include gratuity, and that it is customary to pay a min of 18-20% gratitude". Now, "gratuity" in Canada is just that - optional tips if we feel it is warranted. While it is not unusual for us to pay 20%+ tips when the food and service is above expectation, the fact that she expected such a tip for what we received was an insult!
