“A pleasant, but not terribly scenic, drive”
Review of Bow Valley Parkway

Bow Valley Parkway
Reviewed July 23, 2013

We drove the parkway from Banff to Lake Louise and back and it is definitely more scenic than driving on Highway 1, but it actually isn't all that scenic a drive. There are a few overlooks, but not that many considering you are on a ~50 mile trip. We did see a few animals, but I'm not criticizing it because of that; wildlife viewing is always a roll of the dice. I'd still take the drive, but with reduced expectations.

This is a lovely drive and a good alternative to the highway when travelling between Banff and Lake Louise. There is a good chance of seeing wildlife and during our visit in June we saw elk in the early morning and again later in the day. There are several pull outs where you can stop to admire the scenery (Storm Mountain pull out was our favourite stop). This road also give access to Johnson Canyon - definitely worth a visit.

We visited the area mid-June and drove along this road a number of times to see the wildlife. We saw something on each drive: elk, deer and plenty of black bears grazing on dandelions by the roadside.
Make sure you drive slowly to enjoy the scenery and wildlife- there are animals literally around the corner. Also be prepared for big tailbacks when somebody spots an animal. Stopping close to bears desensitises them so it's best to reduce your speed but continue on past them. Occasionally you will get vehicles on your tail, so if you want to drive slowly there are places to pull over and let them past. Also note the road closes voluntarily from 6pm-9am.
Good luck wildlife spotting!!

We saw several bears and elk on our drive in early June. It is a great time to see bears as they come out to eat the dandelions.

We visited the Canadian Rockies in early June, and traveled from Calgary to Waterton to Banff to Jasper. The Bow Valley Parkway had greatest concentration of wildlife we saw on the entire trip: lots of black bears, cinnamon bears (with young cubs), grizzly mother with cub, deer and elk. This is the best route to take between Banff and Lake Louise.
