we took the parkway to see spectacular Lake Louise then returned to Banff on 1A , saw rams along road, got to wave to the train engineer and enjoy the sunrise reflections off the stream that travels along the road, too many beautiful pictures to sort thru

Use the Bow Valley when traveling west past Banff towards Lake Louise. It has the TransCanada beat hands down.

Be sure to take the parkway instead of the main highway. At least one way. That's where the wildlife hang out. We say lots of elk and mountain goats. Not much traffic either. And this is the gateway to Johnston Canyon, a must see.

I highly recommend this route instead of Highway 1 if you are not in a hurry. It is much quieter and there is more chance of seeing wildlife. This is where we saw our first Elk, grazing by the side of the road.

Ths highway brings you to the Columbia Ice Fields. The trip is very worhwhie. It is a reat place to go hiking and also ride the gondola to have a fantastic view of Banff. Do not be fraid to venture on a white water ride. It is rated as a small white water and a guide is informative for this area.
