Review of Vermilion Lakes

Walk, run, canoe or kayak (maybe even swim) through these beautiful lakes. I often ran through the Fenland (woodland) loop to be spit out at the lakes and grab a quick nap on one of the docks, awakening to the majestic beauty of my personal favourite, Mt Rundle. Although, right now and I think commonly around July/August, the area is out-of-bounds due to the abundance of territorial and frisky Grizzlies that have ventured from the mountain slopes and alarmingly proximal to Banff town. So get there around June to spot a sleepy grizzly, not July to get chased down (by either an angry male, or an angry Parks Canada man with a fine in hand).

The Vermilion lakes are just a mile or so from the ce3nter of Banff in the direction of Lake Louise and offer a beautiful and peaceful place. I did not see any wildlife there but the views are still worth going to see.

The three lakes are well worth a visit and were popular with anglers. We met Daffy a canadian goose who was nesting on four eggs while her partner Donald kept a wary eye on all the visitors who had much to admire in this very scenic area.

The lakes are pretty (I actually enjoyed them more from various distant vantage points, including Tunnel Mountain and Sulpher Mountain), but other than an Osprey dive which was very cool, we were not lucky enough to see much in the way of wildlife.
