“A great condo in Banff!”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Hidden Ridge was a great place to stay in Banff. We got an upgrade when we arrived, without asking for one, so our condo was larger than expected and very nice. The loft bedroom upstairs had a flat screen TV and a separate bathroom. Downstairs, there were 2 separate bedrooms, a bathroom and a large game room with flat screen TV, etc.. The hotel gives you a Wii machine when you get there and you can check out lots of movies. The staff was very accommodating in all respects. One night, we were unable to sleep because of a loud party going on. Within five minutes of reporting it, the noise completely stopped. I was very impressed with the way it was handled. Since there was no air conditioning, people had their windows open so it could have been a real problem had it not been taken care of promptly. We appreciated the nice furniture, fireplace, kitchen, and overall cleanliness of the condo and whole resort. It was in a good location, not directly in the middle of town, but just a short distance from there. I would definitely stay there again!

A very good, affordable option if you want a self-contained apartment (condo) in Banff. Spacious room, bbq grills to cook on, laundry available to use (though 1 dryer was broken, only 1 working). A little bit out of town, but not too far, just a short drive. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would certainly stay here again.

Thank you for the review. I am happy to note that our third party laundry machine provider has fixed this very recent issue with the lower lobby laundry facilities.

This is a nice option if you want more space. We got a one bedroom with a loft bedroom and 1/2 bath up in the loft. The main bathroom however, was very small and no space to put anything. Had to carry things in an out as we took turns in the shower. Also did not think it was as clean as it could have been. The carpeting was actually filthy as was evident by my slippers and socks that were worn inside. I would never have gone barefoot. The bed linens did seem very clean and fresh. The setting for the resort is very nice and peaceful. I could not get near the hot tub. In the evenings there were so many people in there that it was wall to wall people. Not really relaxing to have to side arm to arm with a bunch of strangers so I did not even get in. One thing I did find a little annoying because I stayed in the upstairs loft was that there are no blinds or window treatments. Being the summer time, the sun stays up late and comes up early. The location is good. Close to Banff. If you are energetic you could walk in to town, but driving it is just a short distance and parking is convenient in the town. One thing to point out about the rooms is that we had a whole half - meaning both upstairs and downstairs because of the size of our family traveling together. One thing the family members staying downstairs said that they could hear us walking all the time and it sounded like thuds. We were not jumping or running around on the second floor, just normal walking so the rooms must not be very soundproof. Overall I would recommend this place as it is in a very pretty setting, convenient and room for a larger family. However, for the price I think it was a little overpriced and needed some deep cleaning especially of the carpeting.

Thank you for the review. We know many of the carpets need to be cleaned but the shampooing makes the carpet too wet to dry in the course of a day and since we have been sold out every night since August 2nd, we haven't been able to give the carpets the attention they deserve. We were able to get some rooms done in July and we will be getting many done in September, as well as our property wide cleaning in the early fall as well. I am sorry this proved to be an inconvenience during your stay.

We spent 2 night s here and it was perfect as it was slightly out of Banff itself. The lodge was perfect for us with a view of the mountain. We were able to walk down to Banff for breakfast and use the free bus to get us back up the hill. The hot tub and pool were lovely at the end of the day and the children loved the chipmunk and squirrels that were running around. The staff were very attentive and when we did have an issue they dealt with it quickly and efficiently.

First let me describe why we selected Hidden Ridge Resort. The two of us were going to spend a week in the Banff National Park are and wanted a condo/suite with kitchen and a little space. First choice was Lake Louise, but only limited accommodations were there, so Banff was next and we didn't find any other condos than these. Since we had read the review, we knew pretty much what to expect. So here goes:
PROS: Our suite was clean and comfortable, and the resort is located a mile out of Banff's busy downtown. Staff was very helpful. Spa and pool (towels and changing room were provided) were nice for a dip after a day out touring. Firewood was freely available for a romantic fire in the fireplace in our unit.
CONS: You've read them and they're all true. We chose the one-bedroom (without the loft) and we were in a downstairs unit that had only a few windows and was indeed cave-like. It was the noise from upstairs due to lack of insulation that surprised us the most. We had one family for two nights above us where apparently no one ever sat down, as there was constant stomping around for hours until they finally went to bed. Oh, and the kitchen had the bare necessities, far less than vacation homes we have rented, but it was enough.
Why did we do this? Well, as stated earlier, for the kitchen facilities and a favorable room rate for Banff. Our style is to eat less and more simply than in the restaurants and we succeeded and came out ahead. Generally our suite was quiet, though the buildings are very close together. We came to Banff to tour and go day hiking, so the inconveniences at the resort did not detract; we were out of our suite most of the time we were awake anyway. The open air parking was a bit of a problem, but there was plenty of room in the two underground parking garages when we were there.
OK, you've read this far, so here are a few tips about Banff:
1. Take mosquito repellent in the summer. They will eat you alive everywhere in the park.
2. The Town of Banff is pretty but very, very busy. We avoided it except to purchase a map, a few souvenirs and gasoline. We did go over to the Cave & Basin Visitor's Center, which is the site of the original hot springs. Also nice access from it to the marsh trail and Sundance Canyon trail which follows the Bow River. Flower lovers will enjoy the Cascade of Time directly behind the Park Administration building; in July these were gorgeous and not at all crowded (did I say that the Town of Banff is crowded? Well, yes it is). The Banff gondola was fun for us as first-time visitors, and they handle crowds very well. Fairly good facilities at the top.
3. Many of the sights and hikes are 45 min. to one hour from the Town of Banff. So you will be driving everywhere, but the roads are good. We left town by no later than 9:00 a.m. to tour Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Johnston Canyon (all on separate days). Once you get about 1 km from the trailheads, the quantity of people on the trail drops off and they are fine. We packed a lunch for the trail and made a 4-5 hour hike each time, and wow! When we returned to the trailhead parking lots, they were full of tour buses and cars. And people. And the afternoon traffic into Moraine Lake was been controlled by officials back at an entrance road, so some who came mid-afternoon may not have gotten to the lake at all. So go early and enjoy.

Room Tip: Rooms in the outer ring of buildings should be a bit more private. The 2-and 3-bedroom units are pro...

Thank you for your comprehensive review. We are glad that you enjoyed your week long stay. We keep extra kitchen utensils that we do not stock in all the rooms that are available upon request. Perhaps we may have found the items that you were needing?

Was a little disappointed when first going in to our room. For the price per night was kind of hoping for a little nicer, carpet was kind of gross and felt disgusted to walk on it in bare feet. Im guessing other people felt the same way so they just kept there shoes on. Kitchen was well appointed, full size fridge. It was nice that there was a separate bedroom with a tv. The location was nice and out of the way from the hustle and bustle of Banff. Hot tub/hot pool had a nice view, kind of wished hot tub was a little bit hotter. Front staff very nice and helpful. Nice that you get free bus pass to get to and fro from town because unless you go to town early in the morning parking could be a hard thing to find. Over all ok.

Thank you for the review. We are sorry that your stay was just average as we strive to provide more. We have 30 rooms slated for carpet replacement in the fall and all of the other carpets will be cleaned then too. We've seen sold out every night since August 2nd. As such, we have not had the opportunity to clean carpets in between guest stays as it takes time to dry. Rates in August are quite high, as are expectations surrounding them. I would hope that given the opportunity in the off season, we could provide a better room at a better rate. Do not hesitate to contact us and we hope to see you again in the future.

I was really looking forward to staying at this resort as the website looked amazing. My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in a ground floor room which we found to be very dark, in fact my husband described it as "like being in a cave" as we had to have lights on in the lounge/kitchen area most of the time.

Unfortunately for us the family above us were like a herd of elephants and charged up and down the room constantly. This obviously made it very noisy for us, especially very early in the morning as they had children. This was very irritating and at one stage I think my husband was ready to go upstairs and "throttle" someone as we just couldn't believe that someone could run up and down the room so many times and make so much noise.

Parking can be a problem and a couple of times we couldn't get anywhere near to our room, especially difficult if you have heavy luggage to bring in. The free bus service was a bonus as parking in Banff town is a nightmare.

I agree with some of the previous comments that it was a very noisy complex and some of the other guests could get quite rowdy, especially in the evening when they had been drinking. We would have liked to have used one of the bbq's in the evening but the one nearest our room always seemed to be mobbed out with families so didn't really get the opportunity which was a shame.

All in all we did enjoy the stay because we make the most of wherever we are, but if we came back to Banff I don't think I would stay here again as we did come away feeling a little disappointed as the resort hadn't come up to our expectations.
