we hiked up the sulphur mountain which was grueling with the switchbacks and took almost 3 hours ,but once up there had a gorgeous view of the entire area. we took the gondola one way down as we were beat and had some food and gift shop at the top. this was at sulphur springs parking lot which this may be different than banff gondola, but I couldn't find any other gondola listed as an option.
awesome and breathtaking

“An incredible experience and view!”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

I have been up the gondola at Sulfur Mountain many times with different people. This had to be one the best trips yet. We were with American cousins who had never seen mountains like this and every thing they saw was for the first time - I think that made this trip more special than being up with other Albertans who see mountains regularly and I was able to enter into their excitement. I have to add it was a perfect day as well! The sky was clear, it was warm, not too crowded and an abundance of wildlife - okay, squirrels and a mountain goat -but that was neat! We went up on a Thursday morning, arriving at the base about 9:15 and walked directly on to the gondola - by the time we left 2 hours later there was a significant line to catch the gondola - I would recommend early in the morning for the best views (not overly crowded at the top) and shortest lines. There is a hike at the top that is definitely worth doing - take a sweater or jacket as weather at the top is very unpredictable. It is steep at $35 but one of those experiences I think you have to do at least once and most definitely take visitors to Alberta!

“Reach the top of a mountain without climbing it!! Great views!”
Reviewed July 10, 2013 via mobile

Oh the feeling of it terrifies me, but being up top makes it worth it! Go in the morning or is too busy. Cost about $100 for a family of 4 but is beautiful and an experience worth having.

“Outstanding Adventure and Excellent Burger At The Top”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Having taken the gondola once before, we knew exactly what to expect: wind, cold, heat, rain, snow, sunshine, - in other words, all of it. There's just something about the weather at the top of Sulphur Mountain. And, we all of it that day - including the snow, for a minute in July. The vistas are incredible, the wooden boardwalk including the stairs are an engineering marvel (remember, there are no roads up to the top so how did all of the materials get there and how were pilings drilled into the rock?). It is peaceful and spectacular.

But you always get a little worried about substandard food in tourist hot-spots because face it, when you're at the top, you're a captive audience. But the burgers at the Summit Cafe are outstanding. Fresh made burger patties, crispy fries, all very good. You will wait in line though because the order-then-pay system is not intuitive. The lines seem to form on two ends, and you're not sure which way to enter. Order at one counter, walk to the cashier quite a distance away to pay for your order and then return back to where you placed your order to pick it up once they call your number. It's curved, it's narrow and it's open at two ends. And everyone else is as confused as you. But it was a good burger and I would do it again.

Oh, and pack a few nuts in your pocket for the walk to the very summit at the Cosmic Ray Station. Chipmunks hang out there, and they will jump right into your hand to retrieve a nut or two. Great for the kids (adults too). The boardwalk area is baby stroller-free. It's all stairs.
