Fabulous thing to do in Banff. The gondola's just outside the main town & it takes you up to Sulphur Mountain where the views are just terrific. We went on a cold October afternoon, and if we'd gone earlier in the day I'm sure we'd have found some excellent trails to follow, but it was already 5ish in the afternoon so we stuck to the main footpaths near the visitors centre at the top. Don't know how many photos we took but it was a lot ... the views are stunning, & well worth the trip.

“Worth the money!”

Although it may appear to be expensive it's most definitely worth it! Choose a good clear day and the views are incredible.

“Awesome views!”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

Terrified of heights, but went up with the family. The ride up was a feat due to my stupid fear, but the views from the top (while my feet were firmly planted) were well worth it. Amazing view of the top and Banff Springs Hotel/Golf Course.

“Easy access to some great views”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

We bought tickets up the Banff Gondola as part of a package that included the Columbia Icefield adventure in order to save a few $$ off the admission cost. We wnt to this gondola after previously visiting the Jasper gondola (tramway). They are different in that the Banff gondola only holds 4 people, and there are enough running that you can go in a group of 2 or 3 so you don't get stuck with strangers. What is nice about that is that you are able to move around better than the Jasper tram and get some very nice views on the way up the mountain and the windows slide open a bit so you can stick your camera out a little bit for a better shot. Probably not for people with issues about heights and small spaces though.

At the top there is a large observatory with a 360 degree viewing platform which allows for some nice photography. However, I have to say that I liked the view from the Japser tram better. One you are on top, you have the option of following the boardwalk a short trek (5-10 minutes) over to the old cosmic radiation station. There are a lot of stairs, but it isn't physically demanding, as there are rest stops and viewing points along the way.

What I didn't like was that the top of the mountain and the boardwalk were overflowing with people and you had to stay on the boardwalk; there was no where to go off that made for any exploration or better picture opportunities. In this regard, the Jasper tram again wins out for a better opportunity of adventure.

If you don't want to pay for the gondola, you have the option of hiking up the mountain, although it is about a 4 hour hike and we chose to save our legs for some other hikes. You also have the option of driving up Mount Norquay for a view of Banff from the other side. There is a viewing stop just before the ski lodge. This is free, and according to my husband, had a better view than the gondola.
