“An institution...”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

This is the only game in town. Service is excellent. Well trained and disciplined staff keep this behemoth together. Hotel physical plant is in good shape considering age and use. Rooms however could use some help...in need of refreshing...paint,new furnishings, etc. Parking is an issue given size and layout...use the valets.

Dining for breakfast is institutional...large buffet selections...etc.

Pool is great inside and out, locker rooms need refreshing...sauna is in pay as you go health club.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a view of the mountains and not the parking lot.

Firstly apologies for the late review.

Stayed Dec 22-26/2012. Stay was for honeymoon and boy o boy, this experience at the Fairmont will be hard to beat.

Upon check in, we were upgraded to the junior honeymoon suite. Skye at reception could not have performed better in her excellence in customer service. Without going not great detail, I arrived with an injured calf and the assistance provided to me was outstanding. Below I will do a breakdown of the 5 star experience.

Customer Service: every staff member that we came across was outstanding. Chad in concierge is remarkable in his role. From booking our christmas dinner to arranging our activities external to the hotel, the man deserves a pay rise. A strong mention needs to also go to Amelia at reception. After having minor difficulties with my phone provider and the hotels Internet, Amelia kindly provided us the use of her private phone for Internet access where I was able to check in on my next flight. Her level of service went above and beyond what would be expected of her by her managers in looking after guests. From hotel restaurant staff, the deli/cafe, the wellness spa and porters, all performed excellently in looking after my wife and I.

The room: the best I have stayed in. The hotel has 9 floors and we were provided a junior honeymoon suite on the 8th floor. I could not tell you what their other rooms are like but if you have the $$$ or you ask nicely upon check in, it is truly an experience that I will never forget.

Our ceiling was the cone of the castle with a lovely chandelier over a lovely bed. The room was over 3 levels and we had 360degree views from the room. I keep saying that the best views are outside of your room, but on this occasion I will happily say that waking up with mountain views, river views and town views, makes this room a wonderful experience.

The hotel has a number of restaurants and we dined at two of them and both provided a wonderful experience. We were provided passes to use in their wellness spa and the experience was wonderful. I recommended all to use the multiple hot pools both indoor and out.

Even as I write this in the second week of January, I have such a smile because of the wonderful memories and experiences both my wife and I had.

Do yourself a favour and experience this truly wonderful hotel experience.

Room Tip: Higher floors without question. If you ask nicely, you never know your luck in receiving a complimen...

Visited in July as part of a 3 week holiday across western Canada, we wanted to have a bit of luxury while in Banff and chose to spend 4 nights at the Fairmont due to its iconic status.
Banff is a magical place at any time of year and we would certanly visit again some time, the view of the hotel as we drove up to it was breathtaking and everything we thought it would be. The setting was fantastic, surrounded by countryside and woodlands.
Reception service was very good and generally all staff we enountered were helpful and friendly, which is what you would expect from such a hotel.
The only downside to the experience was the room, which although comfortable, clean and well presented was quite small and had only one small window. We dined one night at the Castello, lovely setting and service was impecible, although the food did not quite live up to expectations.
Overall the experience was great and were glad we booked this hotel, however, having experienced it once I would not choose to stay there again and would probably go for one of the hotels in the town centre.

We just spent two nights at the Fairmont Banff Springs and thoroughly enjoyed everything. Right from our first experience with the valet service, everything was exceptional. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even if we stopped them in the hallway to ask for directions. The hotel is outstanding with so much history and ambiance, not to mention the great setting. Its not often you spend hours just wandering around the hotel exploring, its a good thing we received a map when we checked in.

We stayed in a larger room in the Stanley Thompson Wing, but they have done an excellent job of keeping the Scottish Baronial castle theme throughout. As well with restaurants and lounges in the wing it really does not feel like you are in a different area of the hotel. Our room was plenty large enough for our family of four and although the bathroom was not large it was more than sufficient. We didn't really spend too much time in the room anyways. Other than some infrequent noise from the hallway, the room was very quiet and enjoyable.

The hotel definitely host all the required amenities. There are shops that fairly represent all the shops in town as well as convenience, outdoor gear rental and liquor stores. There is even a bowling alley that offers blacklight bowling. I wasn't sure about the valet parking but in retrospect it was well worth the minor cost. All of the valet staff were exceptional, friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend valet service anytime you bring a vehicle to the hotel. We also enjoyed to pools. The locker rooms were clean and very well maintained, with everything we needed (lockers, towels, hair dryers, hair gel, lotion, showers with body gel, shampoo and conditioner. The even have small plastic bags for your wet swimsuit next to the spinner. We all enjoyed the heated outdoor pool after a trip to Mount Norquay. It was far more relaxing than a trip up to the upper hot springs. I'm not sure what an earlier post said about them being public, you have to use your room card to enter the aquatic centre.

Although not everything was perfect, all of the staff made every effort to make sure our visit was outstanding, which is all a visitor can hope for. There is no doubt that this is a luxury hotel, but it definitely lives up to is heritage and expectations. There are several high end hotels in Banff, but the Fairmont Banff Springs is such a great experience that I recommend it to anyone even considering it.

I've been to a lot of expensive, famous hotels that haven't lived up to their hype. I was pleased to find out--over a recent New Year's stay in Banff--that this hotel is not one of them. Often, the rooms of these kinds of hotels aren't great, especially in comparison to the common areas. Not the case here. Our room was lovely, had a great view of the snow-covered mountains, wasn't overly small, and even came with a complimentary bottle of champagne. I was especially charmed by the antique crystal chandelier. The bathroom was a bit small, but really, the rest of this hotel more than makes up for it. Especially if you want to use the (excellent) spa facilities, being able to pop in and out of your room is quite handy. The service, whenever we availed ourselves of it, was helpful without being obsequious. The walls between the rooms were even thick enough to block out the sounds of holiday revelers (and I think we were next to a family with a squalling infant, so this was important). Needless to say, the common areas of the hotel are spectacular. And where else are you going to find a giant gingerbread replica of the very Scottish castle in which you are staying? Really a fantastic experience. I'm so glad we decided to stay.

We booked a mountain view deluxe room on the gold floor for 11 days covering Christmas and New Year. We were given a room with a fantastic view of the Bow Valley, and throughout the holiday from sunrise to sunset the view was ever changing and breathtaking. The rooms are very clean and the beds are big and comfortable. Other reviewers have commented on the small size of the bathroom, and this is true, but the layout is efficient and the shower is excellent so as long as you go expecting a small bathroom it shouldn't be an issue. Our only concern about the room is that the doors to the corridors are not soundproofed, so you can hear any noise made by staff or other guests as the go past your room, but this was easily resolved with a pair of earplugs.
The lounge on the gold floor is a major benefit, with an excellent breakfast buffet with a good range of fresh fruit, pastries, and a few hot options, and a lovely place to relax during the day or evening with a well-stocked honour bar.
We were staying primarily for relaxation and a ski holiday, and the ski concierge service is very good. Although the bus service is good we probably underestimated just how long it takes to get to the ski areas. When we didn't ski, the walking options from the door through the woods, or in to town, and the Willow Spa were excellent alternatives.
Finally but perhaps most imortantly, the main reason we gave Banff Springs a 5 star rating is because of the very high calibre staff on Gold Floor. They were all, without exception, welcoming, personable, knowledgeable and helpful. As examples, we lost a ski pole on one of the ski buses and mentioned this to Claire on recepton, who secured and delivered us a rental one within the hour in order that our lesson early the next morning was able to go ahead, and Michael gave us excellent recommendations for dining.
Our holiday was everything we hoped it would be, and we will seek to return during a summer season.

My boyfriend and I just spent 3 nights at the Banff Springs and I cannot say enough great things about this hotel. The staff were amazing. Everyone from valet services, restaurants, hotel administration, to the front desk staff was helpful, friendly, and attentive.

The hotel is pricey, no way around it. But it was a wonderful new year's splurge. We had a room on the 9th floor with amazing mountain and river views. The room was small for sure, almost a bit too small. Especially for all the luggage we had with us. The one downside was that there wasn't much storage space for our bags - there was one small closet that barely fit our coats and not much floor room to place our bags. But it was a small downside as the rest of the stay was incredible.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone. It was an amazing place to spend new year's eve. It is a grand castle in the midst of the most beautiful mountains. Fabulous hotel!

Room Tip: The 9th floor with mountain views was amazing. Quiet and comfortable. However, the room was quite wa...
