“Loved it here”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

It's been years since I've been here and it's not changed. All the historic Fairmont properties have their own charm. The staff were fantastic, the room wonderful, and my stay enjoyable. The only reason they didn't get a five star was the room service. The steak was not that great (very fatty), and the fries weren't made from real potatoes, rather like McCains you cook at home. I expected a little higher quality of food. Other than that it was great.

I attended a conference at the hotel and there's no arguing the scenery or the beauty of the property. However it has several issues that have no place in a 4 Diamond property at 279 dollars plus per night.

In the room, the internet access seems to be of the tin can and string variety. I spent 10 minutes on hold with the Royal Service and then the Help Desk service (call centre somewhere else) and was told essentially that it was a volume related delay and that this hotel is always slow with the service. If that's the case, why not tell me upfront? I paid 15 dollars for a service that doesn't work. On top of that, my room, in the main building, provides no cell service at all, so even my smartphone wouldn't work. Over in the conference centre, at least the smartphone works. Get enough staff to answer your phones in 10 seconds or less, not 3-5 minutes.

The room itself was serviceable, but very small. At 280 dollars, I expect to see a full size bathtub. The water pressure also left a lot to be desired. The entire bathroom was far below 4 diamond standard and not even close to other Fairmont properties I have enjoyed.

Because of the age and development of the property, getting from point a to point b can be a challenge. The self-park is a hike and with no elevator, you are hauling your bags a long way. Unless you spring for valet, which is terribly expensive, pack light.

If I come back, it would only be for a conference or other business meeting that is beyond my control. I wouldn't travel here on my own dime.

Too impersonal, disjointed and downright large for good service. The Restaurants were TERRIBLE in either food or service. I came away from this hotel swearing I will never return and that is a travesty because their location is an incredible beauty. They simply can't overcome poor service.

Royal service? – not. We paid for Fairmont Gold level, but this was neither royal or gold. Our “Gold” room was shockingly small, hardly any room for our cases, and no fridge or coffee/tea facilities. When we queried this, the Gold concierge staff explained that we could just call for delivery of coffee to our room in the morning instead, however despite several calls, the Gold lounge was apparently too understaffed to cover this service and too busy to even answer the phone! Wi fi was also intermittent - maybe because our room was near the end of the corridor.

The bathroom was the smallest I have EVER seen in a hotel. We have stayed at several historic hotels around the world which have done great renovations to incorporate ensuite bathrooms, but this was ridiculous, the shower was so narrow, the toilet squashed next to it and basin almost on top of the toilet, no room to turn around! This was on the Gold level! They really should have distributed three old rooms to create two new rooms, however greed obviously won out.

The historic property itself is in a lovely position in the area, located uphill a few kilometres out of town and is very impressive with its castle-like stone exterior and halls, especially considering when it was conceived and built in the wilderness, miles from any kind of facilities at the time. But it’s still not really close enough to the small town of Banff to be able to walk there and back if the weather is inclement, to select from the many cafes and restaurants for a meal. And there is no shuttle service provided by the hotel to and from the town for its guests. This means you are more likely to eat at one of the hotel restaurants which are expensive of course.
The Fairmont group is trading on its name and the imposing historic building here, but is failing to provide the facilities its customers could reasonably expect in the hotel guest rooms for the price they charge. And no transport to the township.
My advice is to stay in a more modern property in the town of Banff, where you will get better value for your money, and just take a walk up to the Banff Springs hotel for a look around, don’t stay unless you like to pay for tiny under-equipped rooms and high prices.

Room Tip: Pay for a modern room in town, not here.

Decadent, but worth it. The rooms, service and facilities are all that you would need for a hotel stay. Dip in the pool, eat sushi at the restaurant, rejuvenate in the spa, hike close by, or play a round of golf, it is a lovely way to spend a weekend.

Drove up after a Calgary conference for a quick night in the mountains. the staff from beginning to end were wonderful...the valet parking guy offered me a pair of gloves as we chatted in the snow flurries. At one point went for a swim and had no idea where to go one lovely staff person dropped what he was doing and walked me there..I had forgotten my bread crumbs. Although the rooms are small and expensive and of course, they charge for internet it was worth it (went to Starbucks in town for wifi)...even for one quick night.

Had a great time at this sprawling complex. Was attending a conference for work. The quality of the rooms varies widely. Some of us had cute princess-style rooms worthy of the Fairmont brand, others had quite small places and I personally had a large business suite located in the Conference Wing that was in need of a bathroom renovation. My bathtub had been refinished years ago but was now scratched, the tub faucet is coming off the wall, and there was mildew on the base of the tile tub surround. Not too classy. Good bed though and got a good night's sleep each day of the week. The main 'castle' appeared to be the best place for a room. My wi-fi did not work the second night despite a charge going through on my credit card for a second night of service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main castle building - not the conference centre or the Thompson wing.
