“Great hotel in downtown Banff”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

I've often stayed at the Bowview which is a related property to the BPL but was able to spend a few nites at the main bldg last week. The staff and service were top notch. The bell guys had bags delivered before I could get to the room. The Terrace restaraunt had a great dinner with great service. The in house Jacuzzi and steam room were better, than going out to the hot springs. Open late and very clean facilities. Two short blocks from Banff ave and quiet. Great room and amenities. Pretty much as good as anyone would want. I'll be back and would recommend this property.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review The Banff Park Lodge.

We take all reviews seriously and use the negative ones as an opportunity to improve but sometimes it’s just nice to get a pat on the back in the form of a positive review so that we know we are still doing things the right way. We look forward to you, your friends and family staying with us again in the future.

Sincerely,

My husband and I called this hotel directly and booked a jacuzzi suite for the night of July 19-20 to review. These are our impressions:
- rooms are very dated (dull brown bedspread, old turquoise chairs with broken legs, old carpeting, old light switches)
- old style television (where is the flat screen?)
- no hair dryer in the washroom
- no exhaust fan in the washroom
- toilet is the old style that uses a lot of water to flush
- tried to have dinner in the hotel restaurant but was told that it was fully booked for a tour group (were we not hotel customers as well?)
- clean rooms and washrooms
- staff are friendly
- bed was comfortable
- it is close to the main strip (but then again, Banff is not that big)
- electricity went out sometime during the night and we were eventually told much later that as a result, this shut down one of the hotel's two boilers...so no hot water for the morning shower. No one advised us of this so my husband ended up wondering why the water kept getting colder and colder. Why was an automated message not left on the phone from the front desk letting customers know this?
- every door creaked - need a little WD-40.
- Jacuzzi was difficult to enter and exit - no steps, recessed entry of any sort or proper edge to at least sit on. A plastic piece off of one of the jets actually flew off while it was being used.
- we did not use the pool area or fitness room so won't comment on that.
- room service was decent - prices are pretty inflated though ($14 for 2 eggs?)
- looked at the breakfast buffet in the morning - not a great selection for $21 per person. We looked at the Keg down the street and they had a very similar buffet for $14 per person.
- as far as the price is concerned, we know that the cost is higher during peak season (we are travel agents and have a limousine company in Calgary); however, we have stayed at other jacuzzi suites in Banff for relatively the same price, and had a much better experience.
We would not recommend this hotel to our clients at this time based on value.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

I was very sorry to read that you did not enjoy your time with us and I would like the opportunity to talk to you directly about your concerns. To that end, I invite you to contact me at the Banff Park Lodge anytime between Wednesday and Sunday. I will be happy to take your contact details and call you back to avoid any unnecessary charges to yourself.

There are a couple of points that I would like to address here for the record;
•We do have a hairdryer in each guest room and it is located on the shelf in the closet. I am sorry if you were unable to locate this.
•The exhaust fan in the washroom is not on a switch and not an isolated fan for each washroom; instead it is part of the hotel air circulation system and is constantly extracting air out of the guest rooms. If you were to hold a piece of paper up to this vent then you would see it get sucked up. This allows for better air circulation and much quieter operation. This is a common system in hotels.
•Our breakfast buffet is $18.50 per person and I am sorry that you did not get a chance to enjoy it.
•You will be happy to know that although our old style TV’s are still in good working order, we are in the process of sourcing new flat panel TV’s and hope to have them installed as early as this fall.
•I am glad that you enjoyed the service, location and our recently updated comfortable beds.
•As we are unsure what room you stayed in we will have our housekeeping team check all of our Jacuzzi suites for the maintenance issues you mentioned and I am confident we will be able to find and fix your issues. Thank you again for bringing them to our attention.

I hope this clarifies a few things for you and the others that will be reading your review and I encourage you to contact me to discuss any other concerns that have or have had.

Kindest regards,

Jim Milley

We stumbled on this after getting a terrible room at Fox Hotel and Suites. This did not show up on our radar when we initially looked for Banff hotels, but I wish it did! Older hotel, which is why it may have slightly lower ratings? Very clean, HUGE hallways and rooms. Great pool, looks like it was renovated yesterday, very modern. Great staff and service. One block from main shopping and dining areas. Great breakfast place right across the street. Great value compared to other Banff properties and prices. Would stay again.

We were very glad to hear that we contributed to turning your negative experience at another hotel into a positive one here.

The pool area has recently been renovated and we are glad that you liked it.

For future reference we do have a great breakfast right here on site as well and hope that you will get to enjoy it in the future.

We got the jauzzi suite to celibrate our 1st wedding aniversary. The hotel was just off on the main street, very easy to get too. Did like that we had to pay for parking on top of our bill. The room was huge same with the bathroom! the price was more than resaonable for what we got. the room was clean and staff was wonderful! I will book here again! Dont book the buffet though. not worth the price. food was old and stale and not a good selection. Next time I'll go accross the street for breakfast for 1/2 the cost

Happy Anniversary!

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our Hotel.

We are glad that you chose the Banff Park Lodge for your special occasion and that you were not disappointed.

I am very sorry to hear that your experience with our breakfast buffet was not a positive one. This is definitely not the norm and your comments have been forwarded to our Director of Food & Beverage who is looking into the standards.

We hope to see you back for future anniversaries or any other time you feel like exploring the mountains.

If you would like to discuss the issue with breakfast further, please contact me at the hotel any time.

Overall a decent enough hotel. TV in room needs an upgrade. I was there for 4 days in early July on a mixed business and pleasure trip. My 3 star rating is reflective of value for $ at $189 night plus tax. If it were $100-$120 for the same, I would have given it a higher rating, but at the price I paid, the overall package was not up to that standard.

The location was great.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review.

I am sorry to hear that the value was not what you were expecting. Prices in Banff can certainly be higher than what some people are used to, especially during the busy summer months; however I am confident in saying that our prices are very competitive for the market.

I trust the service you received was great and I am glad that you enjoyed our location and proximity to the down town core.

You will be happy to know that we will be replacing our TV's in the very near future. The TV's we have, as you would have noticed, still work just fine but in keeping with the times we have been sourcing new Flat Panel TV’s.

I hope you will have a chance to visit us again in the future.

If you would like to discuss any of your issues further, please feel free to contact me direct at the hotel any time.

Jim Milley

Before arriving in Banff (coming from the north-west), we checked different accommodation options in Lake Louise but they were so expensive that we decided to drive the additional 30 miles and try our luck in Banff.
When we got there, we had a look at the first hotel we found, which was the Banff Park Lodge, and given that the price for that night was reasonable, we decided to stay.
We also decided to stay because it is very central, just a 100 m from Banff downtown, while the hotel’s area is quiet and nice (Banff is, in fact, a nice town).

The room we had, on the second floor, was very clean, spacious enough and welcoming. Beds were very comfortable (they even have a pillow menu, i.e., each bed has 3 pillows and each pillow is different as explained in a little brochure placed on the bed) while the rest of the furniture suited the room. In regards to the room’s equipment, there is a refrigerator but no microwave, and the TV set is normal.
In addition to this, the hotel has a couple of guest computers downstairs but they are not free (they work with coins and they cost, f.ex., 2CAD$/15 min.). The breakfast is neither included, so we crossed the street and ate at Melissa’s (good food but a little bit expensive from our point of view).

All in all we consider that this is a good place as long as the price doesn’t skyrocket.

Dont get me wrong, the rooms are huge which weighs heavy as a plus but its definately in need of some updating. Very comfortable and got a fantastic price on Booking.com about a week before leaving, $100. a night! Nice lobby, attractive bar and restaurant, outstanding location in the center of town but off the main strip close to the Bow River. They do charge for parking, wifi, and no breakfast which many other hotels in town do offer. Nice pool but a poor excuse for a fitness room, they might as well not have one it looks like they put it in a closet!

Room Tip: Dont be near the elevator!
