“Perfect for downtown Banff”
Reviewed May 31, 2011

Only two negatives about this hotel - the room we were allocated on arrival faced onto a wall and was dark and gloomy. They were full that night and we'd arrived late so we had to put up with it for one night. Also, because the hotel is so close to town, it was surrounded by 2 hour parking restrictions, so we had to pay for parking. After that, it got much better. The staff went out of their way to give us a choice of rooms the next day and because I was unwell, left us in our original room until the room of our choice was ready. The first room had noisy neighbours; the second room was on a side street and much quieter. Didn't get chance to sample much of the hotel's amenities, but did visit the pool. Changing facilities were a bit cramped, but towels etc were provided and the pool, jacuzzi and steam room were all pleasant and a reasonable size. Usefully, the hotel had a laundry room so were able to freshen our clothes. Unfortunately I suffered a bout of food poisoning following a meal at a local Indian restaurant, so we only accessed nearby hiking trails. I feel Banff is unfinished business for me. What I saw of the twon and its environs seemed to be very attractive. All the locals said they'd had a fantastic ski season with very few 'line-ups', so it may yet be a winter destination for us.

We tried checking in at 1:00 and the girl at the front desk informed us guaranteed check-in isn't until 4:00, but our room should be ready at 2:00. We showed up at 2:00 and they said it should be ready at 3:00. We showed up at 3:00 and they said come back at 4:00. We showed up at 4:00 and the room wasn't ready. We came back at 4:45 and the room still wasn't ready. We queried that isn't 4:00 the "guaranteed" check-in time? Yes, but were told to be more understanding of their "situation" without elaboration. So I guess guarantee doesn't really mean guarantee. Our room was finally ready at 5:00. When we got up there the keys wouldn't work. 20 minutes later we got in and it was the wrong room (a queen bed, not a king and a queen, as we were two couples). Went back to the front desk and was informed this was our fault because they booked the room for "two adults" when we first called in, even though I had advised the lady we weren't sure if another couple would be joining us. Furthermore it's not like they couldn't have called to see if changing our room would present an issue. And "two adults" doesn't necessarily mean two adults sharing the same bed. Although this was clearly a misunderstanding we didn't appreciate a CSR placing the blame squarely on our shoulders and absolving themselves of any responsibility. No apology, NOTHING. It wasn't even one staff member in particular - it was ALL OF THEM. We ended up getting the room we originally booked, and while the the hotel itself was very nice, and a great location, the front desk staff was BRUTAL. "Customer service" is not in their vocabulary. We do not recommend this hotel.

We thank you for your comments and concerns. We appreciate hearing from all our guests whether it comes direct or via Tripadvisor.

We apologize that the arrival experience was not as smooth as it is on most days. You arrived on the May Long Weekend when we had to deal with an extremely busy check out and check in.

Our Housekeeping staff worked extremely hard that day to get all the rooms ready in time for the new arrivals and stay-overs and our Front Desk Agents worked hard to accommodate all arrival requests. Nevertheless, that day we were unable to achieve our standards that on most days we easily surpass.

We always send out an e-mail confirmation, as our records indicate we did in your case, confirming the reservation details as we recorded them. We always encourage our guests to verify those details to expedite the arrival experience and to eliminate misunderstandings.

Upon your arrival earlier in the afternoon we asked Housekeeping to expedite a Superior Room with one King bed, as per your specific request, for the two adults you had reserved and signed for at arrival. We would not have issued you keys to a room with only 1 King bed had we realized that there were four adults in the room. When it became clear that you needed a room with two Queen beds, the Front Desk was able to make changes to other bookings to accommodate this, but at a further delay to your arrival of course.

It is rare that an arrival experience ends up like this and again we apologize for that.

Sincerely,

Andries Flierjans

An excellent location for a wedding. This is the only place that will accommodate 100+ people, other than the 2 big expensive hotels. Service to us all was excellent, and the wedding guest room rates are very good. Their buffet is outstanding. Such a nice location, by all restaurants and shops, as well as a block from the beautiful river walkway.

This is the second time we are staying at the Banff Park Lodge on our trip to Banff. The service is always friendly and this time they upgraded us to a suite from our regular room. We had the seafood buffet on the friday night. It had a vast variety of seafood and tasted delicious. we barely had any room for dessert but had to try a few of them since they looked so appetizing. After the buffet, we went for a nice swim in the pool and then relaxed in the hottub. the best part about the pool room was the eucalyptus sauna room. being in there for 5 mins was enough to make you feel detoxed.
Our room in the suite had a bedroom and sitting area. the king size bed was very comfortable and the room was bright and overlooked the bow river. they had gotten new bedding and mattresses since our last stay and it really made a difference. the room looks much more modern and the sleep quality 10 times better.
we also tried their brunch buffet and the food was once again wonderful. they had a chef preparing omelettes fresh to your liking, a chocolate fountain with lots of fruit, and lots of cold cuts, pastries, and other goodies.
overall, our stay at the BPL was fabulous and i am looking forward to getting married here in June!

We stayed 3 nights at the BPL and have the following comments:
1) Pool-Hot Tub-Sauna was exceptional (although chairs at pool side are a tipping hazard an should be removed)
2) Suite room (Willow) had a real nice layout for sleeping 5-6 persons
3) Was surprised at a $10 charge/day for internet considering I booked a suite. No complementary business center either. ($2 for 15 minutes or something like that)
4) Location was excellent with short hop, skip & jump to downtown shopping
5) Was surprised at a $10 charge/day for parking considering there seems to be free parkade parking just down the street next to a convenient grocery store
6) Room cleaning staff were friendly & concierge helpful
All in all a good pick I just wish there was something unique that made our stay at BPL something I could rave to friends & family about...

We enjoyed a great stay at the Banff Park Lodge this April. The hotel was clean, parking was ample and the rooms were immaculate. We received prompt service when we first arrived, parked our car conveniently in secure underground parking and made our way to our room using the elevator that was easily accessible. The room was large and well equipped with blow dryer, coffee maker and a small fridge as well as finer quality toiletries. The lighting was good and the furnishings were fresh and appeared to be new. A real bonus were the linens. The towels were bigger than the average. A very comfortable place to stay. As we only stayed the one night, we did not have the opportunity to enjoy the pool faciilities but did check them out for future trips. The pool area was clean and easily accessible to the lobby. The hotel is conveniently located just a block away from the main street, making it very easy to walk to shops and restaurants just minutes away. We enjoyed the enxtensive breakfast buffet the next morning before heading out. We will definitely stay again and the next time will be bringing the family.
