“Great Place To Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Our stay at the Douglas Fir is always pleasant and relaxing PLUS fun! We have always booked a 1 bedroom condo which nicely accommodates our family of 4. This time our condo was in the back facing the mountains and we got the treat of seeing Elk right outside our deck door - Literally - right outside the door! Plus a mule deer - again - right outside our door. Fantastic! The accommodations are always clean, and well stocked with wood and kindling for the fireplace. We usually order the breakfast with our stay which provides more than enough for one day and is a good deal! No need to worry about food the next morning! The waterslides are a hit with the kids and I see that they are putting an addition onto that area (not sure what - but can hardly wait!) We will definitely try to make this an annual retreat for our family!

Room Tip: One in the far back, facing the mountains and the wooded area!

The chalets are a nice layout if you have a family. The kids liked having their own room with their own single beds. The chalet layout adds to the mountain feel that a hotel room can't give you.
We found the units to be dated. Probably built in the '70 with some upkeep but not much modernization. Cleaning staff need to spend more attention to the bugs in the light fixtures. Wouldn't stay in the lower unit of the chalet because you will get headlights in your window and noise from the upper unit. $229/night for off season is a little high. $180 is more reasonable.

Would probably try the "Fox" next time because it has a better location and has a newer log house feel to it. We stayed at Tunnel Mountain across the road last year and this hotel was better.

Stayed here for a nice little weekend getaway. Good services overall. Nice little suite with a kitchenette and fireplace made the stay really nice and helped keep the cost of the trip down (which if you've been to Banff, you know it can be high). Next time I stay in Banff I will definitely stay here.

Room Tip: If you want ease of access to the amenities, then go with an in-lodge suite.

The play area and the watersides kept our kids active. The kids had a bedroom with a tv so they could relax while the parents watched the World Series. Wood burning fire place is a nice touch. On site grocery was convenient. Staff were friendly. Great value for families on a quick weekend get away

We have actually stayed here a few times. On this occassion we were in Banff to attend a wedding and realized upon arriving that the resort we were booked to be staying at was next door to this one, so we quickly cancelled and checked out of there and into Douglas Fir. The hotel was busy but they were still able to accomodate us last minute with no reservation and everyone was super helpfull and we even got an awesome rate!
This is in no way a fancy hotel, so bear in mind that it is a lodge, with all of the amenities of home at your fingertips, and although it is not fancy it is super clean and even more comfortable. You hava a full kitchen (and fully stocked with pans, plates etc..) to make breakfest in the mornings in ( a small greocery store onsite with everything you need!) and a fireplace stocked with wood should you want to make in-room s'mores at nite! There is hookups in room for your kids' game consoles if they must, and you have full access to the waterslide park - on the smaller side but the only thing available like this in Banff so be prepared it can get busy on the weekends as it is open to the public, as well as if your little one needs a place to run off some steam- there is an indoor climbing gymnasieum, which is great, and a hit with my children. Our room had 2 beds upstairs and a murphy bed down (both times- mabye this is standard?) and all of them were comfortable and the adults were able to watch a movie downstairs while the kids watched cartoons upstairs before bed, it was perfect. There is no restaurant onsite however there is a liquor store as well as the grocery and ofcourse the Banff Safeway is 2 minutes away. This is definatley a home away from home.

We went to this hotel from October 6-8, 2012, we had a loft room meaning that we had 2 double beds upstairs and one mural bed in the downstairs living room, 1 full bathroom and 1 washroom, the hotel is very average looking and the furniture is outdated and needs to be changed, everything was clean though no complaints there. This hotel is family oriented so there is a pool with 2 slides and another pool without slides, also there is spa and a separate playroom for kids under 12. We have 3 kids so they enjoyed the slides. The hotel is close to downtown, you can walk but it's a long walk with a hill. You can take a free bus downtown just by simply showing your hotel card to the bus driver. The service was ok nothing to brag about. All in all it was an ok deal for the price we paid.
