Getting up in the morning and seeing the Canadian Rockies from outside your door is remarkable. This hotel is a little dated but the rooms were big and well insulated. This hotel has a small seating area outside with tables, umbrellas and chairs and this was quite pleasant sitting with our friends and having a cocktail. The free breakfast was adequate. Nothing special. The staff were friendly. Stairs were accessible if you don't want to take the small elevator. Plenty of parking under the hotel. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: King room the bed was very comfortable

We jump started our 1 week itinerary in the Banff-Jasper area with Charlton Cedar Court. It is located on the main drag-Banff Avenue right off Interstate 1. I had encounters with 4 different personnel 3 front desk clerks and 1 breakfast attendant and they were all excellent. We checked in early for a 3 day stay at Charlton and got upgraded to a King Loft suite ( it turned out that we received upgrades to all 3 of our accommodations a benefit of traveling during the shoulder season). The 1st attendant gave us some recommendations for shopping and was quite courteous. The evening attendant handled all of our questions and we were given separate wireless codes for each device. Parking was plentiful though one of the nights every spot was taken with the larger vehicles parking horizontally in front of the lobby entrance area. Breakfast was adequate - you can make a great peanut butter jelly sandwich but there is no milk and the coffee was not the best. The motel is a 10-15 minute walk to town centre though you could walk to Safeway on Elk Street in 5 minutes at a brisk pace.

I could see why some folks would not like the king loft duplex. It requires going up and down a spiral staircase to reach the loft bed area- not suitable for elderly or when rushing to the bathroom. The layout is nice but not as functional as the 1st floor floor area is small in area and controlling temperature on each level could be difficult with it being cooler on the lower level and warmer in the upper level. Personally, I had no problems with it and the queen room setup may actually be the best choice.

To sum up pros & cons:

Pros:
1) clean well stocked rooms and comfortable beds. Pick the Queen rooms for best functionality.
2) close 10 minute walk to town, 5 minutes to Safeway more to town centre Banff Ave
3) friendly courteous staff who ate ready to help you with all issues.
4) plentiful parking on both sides, easy to navigate.
5) the continental breakfast was decent with options, various breads bagels spreads fruit salad coffee tea.
6) there is a nice pool and jacuzzi right next to Lobby entrance

Cons:
1) it is a motel like setup and doesn't have the elegance of an upscale hotel
2) There is only one elevator though there are various staircases to access the second floor rooms
3) the king loft rooms have the bedroom on top and bathroom on bottom with a spiral staircase. Not good for elderly or frequent use of bathrooms
4) difficult to maintain consistent temperature control on both floors
5) not so good tasting coffee, no fresh milk at breakfast.

Personally I loved the Charlton. I like living in a duplex setup and the rooms were not dated. Service was great. Breakfast could have been better and it could be a long walk tp town during colder/rainy weather. Overall, I would stay there again!

We stayed two nights in this Swiss chalet type motel. We had a suite which consisted of living room and bathroom on one floor and spiral staircase to the loft bedroom with kind size bed. The idea of traipsing down the spiral staircase to go to the loo in the middle of the night is nothing to look forward unless one has huge capacity bladder. Our unit was dark in the middle of the day because the surrounding area blocks the view and the sun. Bummer.
Our bed was comfortable and as far as we could see our unit was clean. Our breakfast was included, juice, fruit and coffee were excellent, choice of toast bread was ok and very few other options.

Room Tip: All rooms are ok, bummer about view and sun.

We've stayed here several times in the last few years and have stayed in several different rooms.
The best rooms in my opinion are the queen twin rooms. The room is of a decent size, the bathroom is large, and the shower cubicle is huge.
The loft suites are quaint but small, and the windows don't allow enough natural light in.
The rooms with kitchenettes need updating compared to the twin rooms, with a much smaller bathroom. Also be aware that if you have neighbours that stay up late and chat (ours had a pizza delivered at 4am) you can easily hear next doors conversation in the still of the night! Yes, the delivery guy knocked on our door instead of our neighbours!!
Still, a nice place, and got to see deer mulling around the parking area under the hotel.

Hubby and I decided to take a few days in Banff to reconnect and relax together. I booked the king size bed in a loft suite at this hotel online - and when we arrived I was so disappointed.

For the price I expected the room to be larger than it was. The main area was about 10 x 10 - the photographs are really deceiving. On top of that the room was dark with very little windows, and the ones we did have looked onto the walkway and into the widows of suites across the way. So we had to keep our curtains closed at all times while in the room.

The heating system was really tricky - it had to be freezing cold in the small downstairs room to be comfortable enough to sleep in the loft. All in all, it wasn't what I wanted nor expected - especially for the price I paid.

However, I did get the chance to see Banff, and we visited a few other hotels we liked so next time i will have more information. I will not book this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask if the room has any sort of view and if you have any medical issues - do not book the loft suite...

Carla
The Hotel is in a great location you have everything you need close by. The Reception staff were very friendly and gave us advice on where to go and what to see, Carla one of the reception team was especially helpful and nothing was too much trouble for her.

The rooms were of a very good standard our room had a loft and fireplace and was kept very clean every day.

The pool and steam room area was small but was just right for me as I just wanted to relax.

The breakfast was good however I felt that there should have been cereal provided. All in all a great time made better by the helpful staff. We will definitely be coming back!

Sean.

Really happy that we stayed here. Room had two separate sleeping spaces which worked well for our family with two small children. Staff was overly friendly and were always accommodating. We thought it would be closer to downtown Banff, but ended up to be a bit of a longer walk than expected. Obviously not a fault of the hotel. Beautiful continental breakfast. Overall excellent!
