“So clean, so simple, so nice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2011

My family spent Saturday night of the past weekend at Charlton's Cedar Court and all 3 of us were really impressed with it.

Everything seemed very clean in our room and around the hotel. There were still beautiful flowers in bloom which added a nice touch.

Our room was spacious with room for a desk and 2 easy chairs. The bathroom was large and had separate bath and shower.

The complimentary breakfast was simple but very adequate. It included breads, bagels, yogourt, fruit, juice, boiled eggs and hot beverages. There was also coffee in the room.

We didn't use the pool this time but it looked very inviting.

Check-in and out were pleasant and efficient.

There were rules of expected behaviour itemized in the room and room card presentation required for breakfast and to get into the pop machine area. I got the feeling that this hotel had things under control.

We stayed here once before and didn't care for it too much. When looking for somewhere this time, on short notice, I remembered that Charlton's Cedar Court was very clean and decided to try again. I am very glad and want to go back soon.

We stayed a September weekend at Charlton's for the annual "Melissa's Road Race" event which draws several thousand runners and spectators to Banff on an otherwise slow, post summer weekend. The price we paid obviously reflects the major event in town ... although not all the hotels were full.

Reservations were handled very efficiently. Some back-and-forth with a possible third person in the room caused a "kerfuffle" with the reserved rate, required a phone call to resolve. Our kids who were travelling with us experienced stiff resistance when trying to use a 25%-off Students Union Ticket Pack coupon.

Front desk, check-in and check-out: grace under pressure! We arrived during a Banff power outage, no problem, they had the check-in sheets and key-cards made up ahead of time (requires electricity to do this). Credit card info was transcribed manually, no issues on checkout by which time all the manual data had been entered into their computer.

Two young families (grandchildren) with us for the race were given nice (but $$$) suites across the hall from each other. Kitchenettes in their units were very well equipped; we fed ten people in one suite. Staff did not appear to have a problem with kids, garbage full of disposable diapers, etc.

Price: is a not-nice surprise! We last stayed at this motel maybe a decade ago when it was competitive with similar, older, "traditional style" motels on the Banff Avenue strip. Since Delta Hotels took it over it has been renovated but the price has also gone up to Delta standards ($169 +++ taxes per night for two seniors)

Location: It is pretty far out on the hotel strip, maybe a 10 - 15 minute walk to the restaurants and shops of downtown Banff.

The room: Quite large, looked like maybe the reno work had given us one-and-a-half of the original rooms. It was quite clean (no dust bunnies or grungies). Real windows which open on both ends of the room are welcome in summertime. Bed was quite comfortable; two pillows of different thicknesses were a nice touch.

Mini fridge suited our needs well and was mercifully quiet. The coffee maker was stocked with decaf' coffee ... hooray! A welcome kettle allowed us to make tea too.

Bathroom: was huge. Large bathtub, and a huge stand-alone shower stall. All the fixtures were obviously post-reno. Everything was clean and worked.

Pool: we did not use the pool, looked in and it appeared to be nice and clean.

Continental breakfast was a little disappointing considering the hoity-toity "Delta-ized" impression they are trying to make (and charge for). Pastries, yogurt, toast, eggs, fruit salad etc were nice but lacked cold cereal, milk, decaf' coffee, "real" fruit.

Dear Valued Guest,
First off, thank you for brining your family to us during the Melissa's Road Race this year; it is always a pleasure to host families and competitors during the race. Your review is much appreciated as it does a great job at describing the entire stay. Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and to reminisce of our front desk's "grace under pressure" during the power outage.
We look forward to hosting you again in the near future,
Sincerely,
Liisa Acheson

We and another couple, travelling friends, stayed for 2 days in a kitchenette suite with 2 bedrooms. It was comfortable, but rather dark, needing a bit of sprucing up as it was starting to look a little shabby. Although reserved for 4 people, it was supplied for 2, eg. towels & glasses. The staff were very professional and helpful. The location was good. Parking under a roof cover, was excellent. The included continental breakfast was good & substantial in a pleasant dining area. One important item lacking at breakfast was that they do not supply milk at all, not even individual milk containers for tea! For a tea drinker, milk, not cream, is needed. On asking the staff, they told us that they had been asking to have it supplied and had been refused. Seems a small item to provide guests. Their sister property, down the street said they have milk as a permanent item. Small item - large importance. All in all a satisfactory stay.

Charlton's Cedar Lodge is located at one end of town. It is a 15 minute walk to the tourist information centre located in the centre of town. We had a suit for a couple of nights which had a sitting area and bathroom located on one level and the bedroom on an upper level accessed via a sprial staircase. Very comfortable suite althought accessing the bedroom area with any luggage is difficult due to the spiral staircase.
The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. We checked out a few other hotels in the same price range but found this one was the best value.
Breakfast was included in the cost was but typical continental style - fruit and pastries.

Stayed for four nights in one of the loft rooms, bed up a spiral staircase, sitting area and bathroom on the lower level - which made carting suitcases a bit more challenging - would defintely not recommend for anyone with mobility problems. Also felt that the room itself was dark no matter how many lights you switched on.

Apart from these gripes, however, the room was clean and comfortable, and the staff friendly and helpful. The inclusive breakfast was more than adequate with the usual choice of cereals, fruit, bread and pastries, and an endless supply of coffee (available throughut the day).

We did not use the pool area, but it looked clean and well looked after.

The hotel location was probably a little further out from the main centre than would be ideal, but it was probably only a 10 minute walk down into Banff town where there is a good selection of bars and restaurants which should suit most tastes and budgets.

We stayed over the Labor Day holiday but the town was not too busy - we were told that it can get pretty hectic at the height of the season - and of course as a base from which to explore the Rockies it cannot be faulted.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and once we had got used to the slightly eccentric room configuration we had no problems.

Room Tip: Beware of spiral staircase in loft room if you have mobility issues.

Overall it is a good hotel. Comfortable bed, clean, spacious, reasonable price for banff area. We booked it through hot-wire, and got a loft room. The stairs to the bed is kinda scary... I was afraid to fall down if I have to go to bathroom at night. They gave free breakfast, but it was below standard (pastries, bread, fruits and boil eggs). Free Internet. It's location is kinda far from banff downtown compare to other hotels, but u still can walk (about 10 minutes)
