Reviewed September 24, 2012

Having just returned to Australia after travelling Alaska and Canada we just wanted to say we loved our time at the Banff Rocky Mountain Resort - and Banff generally was one of our favourite stays. The resort and rooms have everything you need and thankfully a laundry which many don't seem to cater for. We were delighted with the kitchen as we wanted to have a home cooked dinner and all the facilities were so comfortable, clean and suited us down to the ground. Loved the quieter surrounds yet you were so close to everything. Thanks for a great stay and we will be back!

Room Tip: All we can say is Tripadvisor is a great way to check out accommodation and watch out when there are...

Apartment style units (2 bedrooms) are well-stocked, near Banff, and close to highways to Lake Louise.

We stayed at a 2-bedroom older unit for seven days. It was nice to have a fully functioning kitchen. The big screen TV had to be fixed. The doors in the armoires upstairs were off their hinges but no one came to fix it after we called front desk to let them know. There are two bathrooms, which suited us just fine. The Banff bedrooms are very small because there is a legal restriction on room size in a National Park, or so we were told. This apartment looks rather dated, and the pull-out bed was a "torture rack" according to the one who slept on it.

We loved the resort amenities: hot tubs outside and inside. But the outside hot tub has dirty tiles, looks like it could use a good cleaning. We ate at the little cafe in the basement, good food, and played billiards ($1.50 per game.) The swimming pool is small, usually filled with noisy kids, so we avoided it. There is a small gym on the second floor of the basement and it's usually deserted, ditto the squash courts. Rentals are not expensive for squash rackets. Tennis and s'mores on the campfire too.

The resort offers different tours in the mornings and afternoons, and we went on a few of those. Interesting walks, some longer, some shorter. A good introduction to the area. We took the historic homes tour and the tour guide was rather rude when he found out we were supporters of a political party he despised. Then he spent the rest of the van ride attacking us. We were going to report him until we found out he was the manager. We will avoid him in the future. Really wrecked my nice morning.

We were there the weekend of the annual bike race, and there was a lot of noise. People need to keep their kids from yelling outside at 7:30 AM, and they need to learn to walk lightly, the heavy footsteps on the wooden floors and stairs were most annoying.

Otherwise we enjoyed ourselves. But we wished we had been placed in one of the new suites.

Room Tip: Skip the units facing the Tunnel Mountain Road. Upstairs units are 2-bedrooms.

Thank you for taking the time to post comments about the resort. We really appreciate hearing your feedback.

We were sorry to hear that your enjoyment of the interpretive walk was spoilt by the conversation concerning politics which I believe came about by a question concerning how the federal budget cuts would affect the services offered in the Park. Please accept our sincere apology. Your comments have been reviewed with the staff member involved and you can rest assured that the issue has been dealt with.

Resort is situated outside downtown Banff so it much more quiet and relaxing. It's just short 5 minute drive to Banff and they have free shuttle to if you want to have a drink.
The resort is a little bit older but everything is in working condition. Nice pool and tennis courts.
We've stayed in newly renovated Wolf condo and it was very nice (regular rooms seem quite worn off). If you have a choice, pick the room on the second (top) floor (2 bedroom) - buildings were renovated inside but it's still wooden construction, so you can hear other guests footsteps if you're on the ground floor.
They also offer entertainment for the kids during the day.
In my opinion, one of the best choices in Banff area, especially with kids.

Happy to hear that you like our new wolf units. Now all the rooms are renovated at the resort. Yes, we do offer an activity program with interpretive walks and hikes as well as children's activities which your children enjoyed. We are pleased that you feel the resort is a great spot for families. Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We appreciate it.

We spent a lovely 2 nights at the Rocky Mountain Resort in September. After reading some Tripadvisor reviews beforehand which mentioned that some of the rooms were quite noisy at night, we had requested one of the rooms across the road (towards the back away from the main road). We were very happy with the room we were given - No noise and very comfortable.

Reading other reviews, I think the rooms here may be small compared to some hotels in Canada/ USA but ours was still a good size for any one travelling from Europe. It was nicely decorated and well maintained - The only issue from my perspective was that the bed was perhaps a little too soft for me.

We were also very happy with the spa facilities and the friendliness/ helpfulness of the staff. We had been hiking in the mountains all day before we arrived and the spa was very welcome! As for the staff, checking in and out were both very smooth. We mentioned that we were travelling to Jasper the day after we checked out and the receptionist gave us an excellent map showing sights along the Icefields Parkway - We already had a guidebook but the map was much more detailed.

As for location the hotel is slightly out of the centre of Banff. However if you have a car, it is only a few minutes into the centre of town. On the other hand it is very close to the main road which leads to Lake Louise and through the Rockies to Jasper.

All in all this hotel was excellent value for money in a generally expensive town.

Room Tip: Our room was across the road and towards the back so we didn't have any issues with road noise.

We spent six days at the Banff Rocky Mountain Resort in a one-bedroom unit in September and couldn’t have enjoyed it more. We used our Global Discovery Vacations membership here, and once again were very happy with the accommodations available to us.

The main negative comment you’ll notice in the TA reviews is that several reviewers complain that the unit is small, and that is correct. But they’re cute as a button, well laid out and the space is very efficiently utilized. The bedroom is only large enough for the queen bed, but there is a nice sized closet and a very useful built-in enclosed shelf unit with a full-length mirror on the door. The rest of the condo is plenty large enough for two people. (I wouldn’t want to have four in there, though. Parties of four should spring for a two-bedroom unit rather than use the pullout.) The unit itself was spotlessly clean and modern and had obviously been recently renovated. The open living area includes a wood-burning fireplace, which we didn’t use in the unseasonably warm weather, but it sure would be cozy on a chilly night. The kitchen/dining area was plenty big enough to be completely functional and included updated appliances. The bathroom was also comfortably large and in perfect condition. We were totally happy with this unit.

Our unit received a mid-week cleaning, which isn’t always included with Global accommodations, and the paper supplies were replenished at that time, again not always done with Global. There were plenty of towels for the week, but they were replaced mid-week as well. The kitchen has six place settings of dishes and basic cookware, all in excellent condition. Don’t expect to be able to prepare a gourmet meal, though. My pet peeve with vacation condos is that they don’t supply any food storage supplies, such as Tupperware or similar, and that held true here. Other than that, we had no complaints whatsoever about the furnishings.

There is a nice pool and hot tub, both well maintained and clean. Several large grills are available for guests’ use in a little picnic area, as well. The grounds are nicely landscaped, and the whole property is very attractive. We had a first floor unit, and we could clearly hear the guests above us walking around. Since they were on a similar schedule to ours, it wasn’t a problem, but it could be noisy if there were less thoughtful neighbors, so bring earplugs. Otherwise, the whole resort area was very quiet and pleasant.

The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. We experienced a problem with our credit card upon arrival, due to my failing to notify Visa that we were traveling to Canada. Michael and Ben were completely understanding and helpful in getting us checked in anyway and very patient until we were able to straighten out the matter with our bank the next day. Since having no valid credit card meant we couldn’t pick up our rental car either, Michael provided us with a Roam pass so we could get around town that first day as well. Any question we had throughout the week was politely and accurately answered, and we felt that each staff member really cared about our visit. On our anniversary, we asked Ben to recommend a nice restaurant, and he suggested The Bison, which was perfect. (Restaurant reviewed separately.)

All in all, we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the resort. I initially had reservations about booking here, but they proved to be completely unfounded, and we would stay here again without question, should we return to the area. Once again, Global Discovery Vacations came through with flying colors.

Room Tip: Upstairs, if you don't mind climbing. No elevator.

We stayed here with our 2 and 5 year old kids - it was our first "non-ersatz" trip with them (ie: to a real place versus Disney).

The hotel upgraded us to a 2-level chalet type suite. The room was perfectly clean and upgraded and it was very nice to have the extra half bath that this included. If there was any challenge it was that our daughter felt scared to sleep on one level while we were on another level even though it is an open loft. It was not a huge issue. One of us slept with one child and the other with the other child. The pool area is nice as was the playground -- simple though it was, proved handy with eager to play children. We didn't try the restaurant, it really didn't seem lively - we suggest eating in Banff of self-catering in the room.

Sleeping at night was very quiet and did not find any of the road noise people have mentioned in prior reviews to be problematic. Passing trains in the night added just a little ambience. We would totally stay here again if our travels take us to Banff. We got a good price and felt we got a very good acocmodation for our price paid.

Room Tip: See if a 2 level suite is available. It will give you helpful stretch-out space.
