Beautiful hike and can be crazy busy during high season. Go early morning. Wear crampons in the winter. Carry on up to Ink Potts.

This is a very popular destination and you'll share the experience with hundreds of others, especially on summer weekends. Why? It's an easy drive from Calgary, it is very accessible and doesn't require physical fitness. And most of all - it is an amazing experience that gives awe inspiring vistas of waterfalls, cliffs and canyons all in a short walk.

A trip to Johnston Canyon can be very flexible as well. If you only have a little bit of time just go to the first fall. If you have more time do go beyond the upper falls and head for the ink pots. The crowds thin out considerably at this point. Take a snack along and enjoy a picknick in the meadow with the ink pots and some mountain vistas in the background.

We take the tour with a really funny guide called Magda. This guide know the history of this canyon and have an anwser at all our question. She is also very dynamique and she make the trip really interesting and fun. So if you plan to go to Banff, go to the Johnston Canyon, its a really beautyfull half day trip. Thanks a lot to Magda for this beautyfull experience.

The beginning of the hike is wonderful. You gain a bit of elevation, but it is easy going and well marked. See the lower and the upper falls...THEN TURN BACK. We went there since it was overcast and rainy and it was described as something to do when you have low visibility and don't want to waste a hike to high elevation and see nothing. The final part of this hike however is long and not all that level, and the ink pots at the end are completely uninspiring.

The canyon it self is amazing!Be warned though, there will be a million other people.Parking can be a bit of a hassle too.Go early and it won't be too bad plus the drive is great and if you go early you may see a fair amount of wildlife.
