Owner description: Scenic highway cutting through breathtakingly beautiful mountain passes.

I was on the icefield on the last day before it closes for the season, and that was in early Oct 2011. Of course it was great to be able to walk on a field of ice with wind blowing, the cold and do hold on to your cap or you may not recover it when it get blown down the valley.
I was up in El Calafate at ther Perito Moreno glacier earlier in the year but did not get to do the walk so this was an experience missed earlier. The ride on the snow explorer is also a great experience without which it would have been a tedious task to get to the top. Just remember to check the closing date of the ice field when planning your journey so that you will not be disappointed when you are there. a case of so near yet so far.

Even in August a beautiful way of driving from Banff to Jasper or the other way around. You can imagine all the snow falling and blocking the roads in the winter. Lots of possibilities to stop and make a picture

IF you spend the money to go to the Canadian Rockies, just go ahead and drive from Banff or Lake Louise to Jasper. Stop at the Athibasca Glacier center and take a trip OUT on the glacier. We did in 2008! Well worth it. The snow was swirling and the temp was COLD!

Just do it!

If you do nothing else during your visit to the Canadian Rockies make sure that you take the trip from Banff to Jasper on the Ice Fields Parkway. (or Jasper to Banff) No matter if it is a sunny day or one with clouds and rain, the IFP is truly a sight to behold. Peaks and valleys, rivers and waterfalls, roadside glaciers and wildlife will greet you around each bend in the roadway. Silence is yours short steps from the Parkway on the many rest areas and pull-outs. Hikes, from level riverside strolls to access to the Alpine are scattered throughout the route and can be enjoyed for minutes or several days. I never fail to feel awestruck whenever I travel the Parkway and I am sure you will feel the same. Do yourself a favour and get a decent guidebook and enjoy!

Loved the scenery, but as on a guided tour we were on a time frame. Found the icefields a bit 'loved to death.'
