“Holidaymakers beware”

My partner and i stayed at Brookdale House last year and found it quite satisfactory. We therefore decided to stay again this year ,admittedly for one night only but a reservation was made and accepted for 13/08/08 approximately six weeks or more in advance.Ten days before arrival date, without consultation or choice i was told the reservation was cancelled and we must move to another b@b one mile away which had been reserved for us This turned out to be 4 miles away and not in an area which we would have preferred. When i protested at this treatment i was casually told the room was needed for a film crew.Advance booking obviously means nothing to this establishment and i wonder how many other guests were rejected in the same way.
Needless to say we shall not stay there again and this should be a warning to others. You may be rejected for more important visitors.

Stayed July 2007

From the website we thought we were in for a treat...but the website is misleading at least from photos.

1 - Cat hair and human hair - the cat must roam free over the table linen and crockery..we found many hairs on the breakfast table, on the plates etc....yuk. Then a human hair..short and curly....really off putting and that is what you can see from a cleanliness perspective..what happens therefore behind the scenes

2 - Heating - suffice to say that when you are paying for a room you expect some heat. Well no...not here...the response is that the heating is not on...god knows how cold it needs to get for the heating to be turned on. This is an old old house with large rooms..it needs heat! We were freezing, bear in mind this is an old house. We were given upon request an electric fan heater...oh great. Far from ideal, not an option for leaving on for long periods so when you wake up early morning it's cold..or shoudl I say that the cold woke us up. I don't like having to ask for heating ..and if the cost is an issue then sort out the system so only taken rooms are heated.

At breakfast - a room with a large real fire, other people complained of the cold. The couple in question were in their 60s and went to get a jumper to eat breakfast...not acceptable. Again, shut the door, put a few logs on the fire for the morning breakfast stint...very poor

3 - Cleanliness - our room was not cleaned at all during the 3 days - bathroom, bins etc....ok it's not a 5 star but be fair

4 - Flies - everywhere in our room...disturbing. We killed at least 5..they were dopey so it made us think they had been in that room for a good while

5 - Food - breakfast was good when we were on our own, but as soon as other guests were there the system broke down. i.e. the food we had was hard bacon and burnt hard sausages..they had been sitting in teh pan overcooking ...

6 - Hospitality - this is blunt but we did not feel comfortable and avoided the owner as much as we could. Just plain strange, not a good people person. In our view, it's like the house has been inherited or it's their home and the B&B is a sideline which is a bit of an inconvenience...but you cannot expect to take money from people and not provide a service

Good stuff - not a lot - this is a B&B and both were not up to scratch

In short

would we go back - NEVER
would we recommend it - NEVER

The room was clean and large, Christa the owner is very cheerful and easy to deal with, she was very good with our children and could not do more for you. The breakfast was also very good. The Jones'
