We only stayed the one night as a break from our journey from Scotland to back home in Wiltshire. What a charming very comfy, dog friendly pub. Rooms were not large but fine for one night. Service excellent, food generous and tasty, and plenty of real ales. I did however feel £15 for three dogs for one night a bit steep! Definitely recommend it.

What a place! Brews it's own beer and has guest ales on, has acoustic music nights, does food and accommodation. Situated near to the Peak District in a delightful Derbyshire village, easy access to Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield etc. Can't anything about the food...haven't eaten there but it sure looks good and smells good. The beer is superb, kept as it should be. This pub has one of the best acoustic music nights around - I go there most Tuesdays and thrash out some tunes myself. It really is a gem and has won many awards, you'll know why as soon as you step through the door.

Room Tip: Ask nicely

We enjoyed a great, long weekend in the cottage. The view from the front step over the valley towards the wooded hills is magnificent and, as a base for walking, this is about as good as it gets. The kitchen is well equipped - we catered for 12 on several occasions as some of our friends were staying in the pub. The lounge is comfortable and the dining table ideal for entertaining. Note the reassuring thickness of the walls. Bedrooms and bathroom are all good. An extra loo would be a welcome addition.
It's impossible to enter the bar and not want to try the array of excellent ales and we certainly enjoyed a variety of well prepared and presented meals . Staff are helpful and well motivated.
We are returning next year.

Room Tip: Derbyshire air & ale make sleeping location largely irrelevant!

I was recommended this hostelry by a customer of ours and I’ve stayed three times, once with a colleague from Sweden. The rooms are well decorated, clean and tidy. The food, evening and breakfast, is very good and the attention to detail by the staff is first class. I will always try and stay here when I have meetings in the North of England, even though it’s off the beaten track. My Swedish colleague thought that this was an excellent place stay and loved the quiz on the Wednesday evening when we stayed.

As members of a walking group based in Nottingham, 12 of us stayed at The Poets recently. The B&B rooms are comfortable and well-equipped with TV + kettle / tea / coffee etc. while the adjacent self-catering cottage is perfect for families and/or friends. The range of ales, beers, porter and cider is unrivalled, including some from the Ashover Brewery, incorporated into the building. The pub exudes great atmosphere, immediately welcoming, while the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, demonstrating obvious pride in their work. The full English kick starts the day perfectly and the lunch / evening meal menus offer a wide choice of wholesome meals. You can eat at your table in the convivial and relaxed open-plan bar, in the more functional breakfast room or, more formally, in the upstairs function room. At different times we tried all three options and each meal was excellent. And the Curry Night on Sunday is strongly recommended. Add all of this to the village setting, in some wonderful Derbyshire walking country, then you have the perfect pub. As a group, we are already talking about next year.......

Room Tip: Book early, there are only 5 rooms, one of which is a twin. The self-catering cottage is roomy yet c...

My sister recently got married and had the ceremony at Ashover Village Hall, a group of us booked into the Old Poets Corner for the wedding night and we really enjoyed it. Our room was beautiful with a gorgeous view of Ashover village. The bed was extremely comfortable. We woke peacefully and had breakfast downstairs which was delicious - staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. I would definitely recommend Old Poets Corner and I hope to stay again.
