We have just returned from a 3 night 'Retreat' for our first anniversary and didn't want to leave! It is a beautifully renovated, quirky upside down cottage with fabulous views. Everything is finished to perfection and there wasn't anything that wasn't provided. We had planned on visiting Matlock but after arriving on friday, we didn't use the car again. The information pack in the cottage has some detailed walks in it of which we did two, despite a bit of little drizzle (and a whole lot of mud!) The views you get on your way round are just beautiful. We ate at the two local pubs 'The Black Swan' and 'The Old Poet's' and both were lovely. The live band on the friday was great and the locals were very friendly. Our hosts, Ian and Elaine couldn't have been more accomodating. Full of information and leaving a lovely welcome pack on arrival. You could spend hours just watching the birds and squirrels feasting on their seeds and nuts from the 6 feeders on the tree in the garden of Ian and Elaine's house, all from the comfort of the sitting room. It really is a little bit of heaven away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We will definitely be recommending to family and friends and will be back for our second anniversary (if we can wait that long!)
Had a smashing time. Lovely spot and friendly owners. Good attention to detail and spotlessly clean. I heartily recommend 'The Retreat'.
Booked this cottage for a long weekend, and what a delightful place it is.
The cottage is finished to the highest standard and is very comfortable, we especially enjoyed the welcome pack left for us by the owners Elaine and Ian.
Ashover itself is a pretty little country village.
It boasts 3 pubs which all serve food, although be aware that only the poets corner serves food on a Sunday night and then it mainly Curry.
There is also a butchers, post office general dealers, and tuck shop.
The surrounding area is really beautiful, and there are loads of walks, of which there are details in the cottage
We spent 5 fabulous days at The Retreat in Ashover. The cottage is beautifully decorated, with lots of attention to detail and one can most certainly feel the love put into it by Elaine and Ian!
You will find everything you need for a relaxing stay including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion (which I was not expecting but thought was a wonderful touch ). It felt like a home away from home and we would have loved to stay longer.
We can most certainly highly recommend this beautiful cottage to everyone and anyone!!
The retreat is a loveley and nice cottage with very modern equipments. It fits perfect for two persons, ideal for a young couple. Ashover is a very pleasant village witch offers really good pubs with great food. There are a lot of nice footpaths to walk arround and enjoy a calm and pleasant countryside.
The `Retreat` is a perfect compact cottage for two, based in Ashover, convenient for touring the Peak District area, with three pubs within the village (recommend the `Crispin` for good value food and the local farm shop for a cake break!).
The `upside down` cottage is modern and very well appointed by the friendly owners who live next door. The cottage is equipped with everything you will need, including a useful welcome pack on arrival and an amazing view from the lounge/kitchen!
Lovely home from home Well thought out refurbished to a very high standard Perfect for a relaxing break
