“Basic chain pub food. Expensive drinks.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014

The Chequers is Whitbread owned pub in the Fayre & Square chain. The food is nothing special but it is cheap. So expect your onion rings chips and peas to be straight from the deep freeze. Having said that the steaks are OK as are the other meats and fish, although I wouldn't recommend the burgers.
And there are problems. The place is busy during the day and attracts families with lots of kids. At time there seems little discipline. No one seems to bother about kids running around even if they disturb other diners. There is also a lot of food on the floor. So if you drop a chip onto the floor don't bother bending down to pick it up because you probably won't know which one it is.
My biggest gripe however is the price of drinks. They lure you in with 2 meals for a tenner so do you really want to pay £15 for a bottle of wine? I think the cheapest wine is around £10.49/bottle but it isn't very nice. There is a handpull on the bar but it rarely has beer connected to it. So what you save on the food you pay for with the drinks.
So cheap convenience food. Not for a special night out. It is the place to go if you can't be bothered to cook and don't want to wash up after a takeaway. Haute cuisine it isn't..

“Not at it's best”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014 via mobile

Went last night 4 of us. Mistake on 1 meal, cold items on 2 meals (although corrected straight away) missing items on other meal. Once told staff were superb and in the end received 4 free desserts. This is the 5th time of coming here and by far the worst. Shall return as previously no problems, we all have bad days and this was one but the staff did the best they could to correct things.

“Same as all”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

if you just want an everyday cheap meal this place is ok, but no more. Orders are taken at the bar and there was a queue for both drinks and meal orders. The meal was passable and good value but we were quite squashed on our table and had difficulty moving our arms. The drinks were reasonable except we found the wine more expensive than other places of the same type. Ok for a quick meal but not a special one.
