The Chequers is Whitbread owned pub in the Fayre & Square chain. The food is nothing special but it is cheap. So expect your onion rings chips and peas to be straight from the deep freeze. Having said that the steaks are OK as are the other meats and fish, although I wouldn't recommend the burgers.
And there are problems. The place is busy during the day and attracts families with lots of kids. At time there seems little discipline. No one seems to bother about kids running around even if they disturb other diners. There is also a lot of food on the floor. So if you drop a chip onto the floor don't bother bending down to pick it up because you probably won't know which one it is.
My biggest gripe however is the price of drinks. They lure you in with 2 meals for a tenner so do you really want to pay £15 for a bottle of wine? I think the cheapest wine is around £10.49/bottle but it isn't very nice. There is a handpull on the bar but it rarely has beer connected to it. So what you save on the food you pay for with the drinks.
So cheap convenience food. Not for a special night out. It is the place to go if you can't be bothered to cook and don't want to wash up after a takeaway. Haute cuisine it isn't..
