“not good”
Reviewed October 21, 2010

the caravan 1 it self stank of smoke, and i didnt think that you could smoke in any caravans now, especially with all the laws, and when i did try to sleep, you could hear a lot of singing from the nearby pub, also the track to the caravan you need a 4x4,its no good for a car,and its so steep the hills, its good price but maybe scrub a bit more up on the caravans

Thank you for your comment and I’m very sorry to hear you did not think our accommodation was up to scratch. I would like to say I wish you had come to see us about this at the time as we would have tried to solve the problems.

Regards the smell of smoke in the caravan 90% of our guests are very considerate and do smoke outside, however a minority don’t. We have a steam cleaner to try and get the smell out of the carpets and use air freshener throughout the caravan, however if you felt the caravan was not clean enough we would have been happy to either do more work on it, or we would have moved you to another caravan if there was one available. It is for this reason we have set aside caravans 5 and 6 for non-smokers only.

I’m surprised you could hear singing from the pub as it is nearly 500 meters from the static caravan site and there is a large woodland in between. As it is usually a quiet rural pub I’m not sure what they were getting up to down there!

Our farm lane is not tarmaced but I think it is an exaggeration to say this means you need a 4x4. We ourselves have a car and use it on a daily basis as do hundreds of our visitors every year. However if your car has low ground clearance and you were struggling with the lane if you had come and asked us we would have been happy to add some more stone as we regularly maintain it ourselves.

Finally I completely agree our farm and static caravan site is on a steep hill, a fact hammered into me after spending many years walking home from school! However the very few guests who stay with us and don’t have a car either get a taxi, walk or ask us for a lift. I think the hill is a small price to pay for the wonderful views we have up here.

So again, I’m sorry you were not satisfied with the caravan, but I would urge you to always speak to the owner of any accommodation immediately if there is anything your not happy with.

Being the first users of brand new 2 bedroom caravan nr 5, we enjoyed our week at Shaw Farm very much. The view on the meadow and hill with occasional Friesian cows on it is so wonderful and relaxing.

Caravan itself is of great luxury. Some kitchenware even of better quality than we have at home! Very complete and modern. Central heating works perfect. Even a pair of binoculars and stock of good books are available. If you want to experience farm life, you can; otherwise you will only hear a distant whizz of the tractor.

Great location for walks. Our walk to Kinder was one of our best ever. Manchester, on the other side, is within reach as well in case of a rainy day: MOSI museum, shopping etc.
Very friendly welcome, no hassle of registration papers, fetching keys; instead, a very personal intro to your holiday environment. Enjoy it!

Very friendly welcome. Farm is in a beautiful location.
Caravan was clean and tidy. New Mills is a nice town with great history.
V.Good walks around the area. Local pub (The Fox) very friendly with excellent food, good prices and a nice walk from the farm (woodland)!
Overall - Great stay ... will return.

Have just enjoyed another short break at Shaw farm. A great place for a relaxing break, with unspolit countryside on the door step. Castleton, Buxton, Chatsworth, Bakewell, Kinder, Derwent Reservoir, Eyam all within easy reach - the local town offers plenty of shops to stock up on food etc before parking up the car, reaching for your book and enjoying the peace and quiet back at the caravan.
There are currently 5 caravans on site, No.5 is definately the most comfortable if you are staying during the winter months, but all offer inexpensive self catering accomodation suitable for all budgets.
Whether you're young, old or a combination of, Shaw farm has plenty to offer if you're looking for an inexpensive holiday in Derbyshire's High Peak.

Thank your for your review and pictures. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, and hope the snow didn't cause too much disruption! I would just like to say we are putting on a brand new caravan this year. The one you stayed in (no.5) will be untouched but renamed to Caravan 6.

Regards
