We only live an hour from Alstonefield, and we wanted a relaxing two-night break in the Peak District. Alstonefield Manor seemed to offer that and we booked. I can honestly say it's the most relaxing weekend I've had in a long time. The house is just wonderful, our bedroom was elegant, clean and large, and the bed very comfortable. Jo and Robert are very friendly hosts, and the breakfasts were delicious. If you are looking for a quality break in this area of the Peaks, then this is the place for you. We normally book self-catering as sometimes find that 'living in someone else's house with them' can be a bit awkward - not here!

I'll preface this review by saying that our car broke down on the side of the motorway when we were only about an hour away from Alstonefield Manor. We called to let them know our situation, and they referred us to a reliable local garage. So, instead of arriving around 4pm, we ended up being dropped of by the AA man just around 8pm, in time for a friendly welcome and a table waiting for us at The George, a fantastic local pub. Robert and Jo couldn't have been kinder to us. Our room was so comfortable and beautifully decorated (we stayed in the main house), and the candle-lit breakfasts were absolutely delicious with homemade preserves, oatcakes, a full English, and lovely fruit juices to complement the hot beverages. It was such a treat to play with Bo, their very cute Flatcoat Retriever, in the lovely gardens surrounding the manor. Because we were without a car and didn't have a definitive answer regarding when the repairs would be done, Jo and Rob were very kind to offer us all sorts of accommodations, including advice on local walks, maps, and even another room in their cottage, should we need to extend our stay. We ended up eating at the George both nights of our stay, given the proximity, and the food and ambience were both fantastic. As we had another fixed destination to get to, we were happy that our car was fixed in the nick of time, and kindly, Rob drove us the half-hour journey to the garage. We were well taken care of in every possible way. My only regret is that we didn't post our glowing review sooner!

We have just returned having spent 3 nights in the B&B accommodation at Alstonefield Manor. From the moment that we arrived and were met by Rob in the parking area, to the moment we left this morning, we were given such a warm welcome, that it really was very sad to be leaving.
Upon arrival we were treated to warm scones served with home made strawberry jam and a pot of tea, in the beautiful drawing room for guests. After a long journey from Salisbury, this was most welcome, together with the log fire - I could have stayed here all evening but we had to drag ourselves away as we had booked supper at The George Inn - very good indeed and only a 1 min walk away.
We have stayed in several Sawday's properties, but never have we enjoyed a stay so much. What made this stay so exceptional were:
1) The welcome from every member of the family - Jo, Rob and their children's kindness and enthusiasm.
2) The stunning interior of the house - every room was a dream, in particular the panelled dining room.
3) The candle-lit breakfast. Firstly we had a gorgeous fresh fruit salad, then a full aga cooked breakfast, and finally (if we could manage it) toast with homemade jam.
4) Afternoon tea each day. Upon returning each day, Jo would welcome us and instantly the kettle would be on and we would have tea and either scones, fruit cake or crumpets. Jo, thank you so much - this was our favourite part of the day and what we looked forward to whilst we were out walking.

We so look forward to returning either to stay in the B&B accommodation or in the self catering accommodation which Jo showed me also. My husband described our stay as being 'perfect' - we can not think of anything that could be improved. THANK YOU so much for making my first stay in Derbyshire so wonderful - we didn't want to leave.

We stayed in the self-catering accommodation. Because I booked so far ahead of our proposed stay, there were no advertised prices on the website. At the time I remember being quite surprised by the total cost but the owner stressed that it would include a candle-lit breakfast and use of the gardens etc. Anyway, I went ahead with the booking because of the area and accommodation being so dog-friendly. However, I did double check and questioned if that included the dog; it didn’t. She was extra! Later, when the current year prices were posted, I found that we had paid much more than the usual rate. When we got home I emailed the owners but never heard from them again. As a result of this experience, I would certainly hesitate in recommending this accommodation.

If you do go, it is in a lovely setting. The kitchen area and shower room are very small and really little more than converted cupboards. The owners of the property went away when we were there, so we were left to our own devices and never got the promised scones! For the price we paid, the property should be serviced, (particularly as there is really not the room to hang out bath towels after use). We had a good week because Derbyshire is such a lovely place but would definitely not stay here again.

We enjoyed a one night stay at Alstonefield Manor. A beautiful country manor house, comfortable, natural and unfussy - thoroughly relaxing. A soothing bedroom overlooking the garden, an antique iron bed with beautiful bedding. Jo is a most welcoming and friendly host, complimentary afternoon tea on arrival, with homemade scones, and as it was a lovely sunny day, served in the delightful quiet garden with stunning views.

We had dinner at the local pub a very short stroll away. Breakfast was beautifully cooked by Jo and served in the candle lit dining room.

The owners are very helpful and attentive and happy to offer excellent advice on where to visit in the area.

We really enjoyed our stay - just wished we had stayed for more than one night!
