“Beautiful location”
Reviewed June 6, 2012

First the good points. The setting is excellent. Right on the river with a small stream at the side too. Lovely decking by the river with tables and chairs. Everything was exceedingly clean and the bed very comfortable. Now for the downside. The main complaint was that the room was very hot and we were unable to open the windows as we were on the ground floor and at the front and there were only casement windows. When this was mentioned to the owner, his reply was “oh we have no trouble here, you can open the windows”! It may be peaceful, but you only need one idiot. Consequently we suffered in the heat and had very little sleep. The other complaint was the breakfast. The fresh fruit was lovely but the cooked breakfast left a lot to be desired. The bacon was very poor, very fatty and swimming in grease with the rind left on. The egg was hard and again very greasy. One of the poorest cooked breakfasts I have ever had. Finally when paying by card he took my card into another room to get a better signal. I'm not saying there was any dishonest intent, but we all know that we don't let our card out of sight! So for the setting and cleanliness I give it 5, for the lack of sleep and poor security I give it 1 and for the breakfast I give it 3. So the lack of sleep trumps the other points, so it only gets 2. Sorry.

We had forgotten to ask specifically for Room 5, so were allocated one of the first floor rooms, reached by an outside staircase. Not recommended for those with mobility problems. The room was very clean, prettily decorated and had everything necessary, although the bathroom was rather small. Also the extractor fan was extremely loud and lasted for some time; it was also possible to hear the fan in the next bathroom. This could be a problem if you needed to go to the loo in the night. The bed was exceedingly comfortable. Coffee, tea, biscuits etc were provided, although the milk was the UHT variety, not fresh. Very small TV. Cooked breakfast items were selected the night before, from a list supplied; they were very well cooked and of good quality, not some 'catering' rubbish. Fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, muesli also available, proper coffee and tea of choice. Homemeade marmalades and jams. Excellent quality breakfast. The decking by the river has tables and chairs and is for the use of all guests.

Room Tip: Room 5 is larger, has a very large walk-in shower, french windows opening out onto the decking and i...

We stayed at Pound Court for two nights this weekend. It is a lovely place, right next to the river. Room 5 is particularly nice, with a terrace area outside. The rooms are immaculately clean. Delicious cooked breakfast.

Room Tip: Room 5 very nice

Had a great stay at pound court.  We originally planned to stay for two nights but decided to stay one night extra.  This B&B is situated right next to the river and has tables where you can sit an enjoy the scenery.  Our room was spotlessly clean and all furniture etc was well maintained.  Angela the proprietor was welcoming and friendly.  I had phoned beforehand to check if we could take our two dogs (which was fine) and by the time we arrived we already felt as though we knew her.  Angela loaned us some books on the area including walks etc and was full of advice on how to plan our time.  The breakfast was excellent.  A choice taken the night before in order to prepare exactly what we wanted.  There was a selection of cereals, fresh fruit, yogurts, fruit juices etc as well as a cooked breakfast - home made jams finished things off nicely.  There was also the occasional added extra - the fresh vanilla brioche was lovely.  I ate too much!  We would come back.

Really enjoyed our two night stay at this refurbished property, originally separate cottages. Angela was very welcoming, provided us with our own keys and excellent breakfasts in the mornings. She also gave us lots of helpful information on places to visit in Devon. It was so refreshing to stay in such a rural environment yet quite close to Totnes and Dartmouth. An excellent location for exploring these and other towns in the area.
