“Great Location on the Sea of Cortez, Food is Average...”
Reviewed July 28, 2009

We stayed at Palams De Cortez for 3 nights in June 2009 -- The location is outstanding, right on the Sea of Cortez, very very pretty setting, very cute little town of Los Barriles...

Most people go to this area for fishing -- we didn't fish, but we did do scuba diving with Vista Sea Sport and had a great experience with that company (based in Buena Vista, they picked us up right on the dock outside our hotel)...We mostly just hung out, lazed about in our hammock outside on our patio of our cabana, used the pool and took trips around the area.

Our room was large and clean and the bathroom was large and the air conditioner worked well but did make some strange noises. It is true, the beds are hard and they are small (doubles or twins) -- so not super super romantic -- And the food in the required dining room was very average, pretty blah. We actually ate several meals out of the resort for some variety -- there are great choices in town and around the area.

This is not a 5-star all inclusive type resort that people might be looking for in the Cabo area, but it is a great location on the Sea of Cortez and a laid-back feel.

I really do not want to knock this hotel down that much, it is not the worst out there but they really nickel & dime you there. Like one of the other guests wrote about his trip, it is true that once the owner retired & the sons took over, they made some changes & all of the changes are really driven to separate your money from your wallet. When one is paying $350-450 a day to go fishing one would think that the fishing rods & reels would be included. They are not, they have the audacity to charge you extra for them! I liken this as the same as going to a restaurant, ordering your food & then once your meal is served you find that you have no knife, fork or spoon, Once you bring this to the attention to your waiter, he kindly informs you that they are available but you have to pay extra for them. The food was okay, the overall feel of the resort is one of relaxation but I can see where one could get tired of being confined to the same place due to it's location. I have stayed at Palmas before, and I did give them the benefit of the doubt but from now on I will stick to La Paz & the Fishermens Fleet which really gives you a bang for your buck! You get a panga for about $220 a day which includes breakfast, lunch & beer water or sodas. Plus you can walk the malecon at night to eat, drink or be with that someone special as the sun goes down. Sorry Palmas but I will not be returning!!

This is a one-start hotel charging 5 star prices. The beds are rock-hard and tiny (all singles and twins), sewer gas came up through the drain in our bathroom the whole time, hot tub was cold, pool was even colder, food is mediocre at best when you can get it, TV had no satellite signal, fountains all broken, no netting on driving range, no management on site in the evenings, partiers allowed to disturb other guests with no response from management, dog excrement everywhere that doesn't get cleaned up, boxed lunches terrible, bathroom water pipe burst soaking me and the room. This place is totally understaffed and the manager couldn't care less. Front desk staff lies and does nothing to rectify anything. In short, this is the most expensive terrible vacation I have ever taken and I'd never go back. If you want rest and relaxation, this is not the place.

Fishing was awsome. I have been to the East Cape when it was slow and wide open. This boat crew worked hard. The condo rooms are really comfortable. The food was very good. The drinks were great. Did anyone get the license plate of that Cadillac. Wow. Went down with 7 friends and everyone had fun. The grounds were beautiful and staff very helpful. Stores within walking distance and that small town feel. Herman in the fishing reservations is a very helpful person. Liked it so much I'll be back Thanksgiving with my kids and wife. Good fishing!!!

I just finished my fifth trip to the Van Wormer resorts with four of them at Palmas de Cortez and I will never go back again. Every year it is the same thing. They had us on the dock at 6:45 am for our first day fishing and we did not get our boat until after 9:30 am. They kept telling us that our boat would be here in 5 minutes. They five minuted it to death. There is a lack of customer service with the boat dock personnel, especially the person that launches the boats. They lie to you and call you names when you ask questions. After asking about our boat three or four times, the person that launches the boats called me a pendajo. Well, this pendajo will keep his American dollars to spend at another East Cape resort or somewhere other than at a Van Wormer place.

While we waited for three hours for our boat, the boat dock people loaded up all of the competition resorts boats. Because we came just after bad weather, the only boat dock available was Palmas de Cortez’s dock. I can only assume that the competition resorts paid for the ability to load at their dock and since they already had our money, they took theirs, loaded their people and left us waiting on the dock. This is really poor customer service.

Our trip was booked one year in advance. We usually have about 40 or so people on the trip. The fishing boats were booked and paid for in advance. Upon checkout, we were charged $30 per day for using the boats fishing rods. We were never charged before and we were never notified that there would be a charge this year. They charge you for your drinks you order in advance. After your day fishing, take the drinks with you or the hotel will take them back and still charge you for them. They nickel and dime you to death.

This is a really expensive way to fish Baja. The rooms are adequate but no TV’s. Three to four people to a room. The water pressure for the shower is horrible and very touchy. You go from scalding to very cold with a minimum adjustment.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. On our first trip (2003), everyone got very sick. It happened again this year to about half of the people in our group.

Fishing should be the same at any of the East Cape resorts as they pretty much all offer the same type of cruiser or panga packages. Also, they all fish the same areas.

We are going to go to the Buena Vista resort or possibly Rancho Leonardo. I will never book again with the Van Wormer resorts of Palmas de Cortez, Playa del Sol or Punta Colorado.

If you are interested in only a resort and not fishing, stick to San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas or the Cabo strip. You can get a four to five star all inclusive hotel for the same price they charge for a room here and get the customer service you deserve for what you are paying.

3 stars seems about right...could have been better could have been worse...like, right next door where we were originally booked. you definitely don't want to stay at the playa del sol unless you like a VERY basic room, a dirty pool and generally rundown facilities...so back to las palmas, there's a great pool including the swim up bar, overlooking the beach. all good. but the rooms...mmmmmehhhh....nothing to write home about. uncomfortable beds and minimal space, but nicely remodeled bathrooms. which is good. coz you're in mexico, and the levels of food hygeine ain't quite up to scratch in this place. we spent plenty of time in these nicely remodeled b-rooms, courtesy of the folks who may or may not have cleaned our catch of the day. think twice before you eat that sashimi... of course the fish is fresh, so something else ain't right...food was OK at best...and you're paying for it whether you like it or not..what else...tennis courts, golf course if you aint fishing...kayaks and ATVs for rental, all nice options, coz there's not much in town.
