We went in Mid June.
Very good food.and drinks.Selection is very good at the Buffets. Look over the Carving stations before taking everything you see each meal, then food won't get boring.. Loved the Smoothie drinks at buffet, champagne in Morning. BBQ ribs Very good.
Lunch buffet is on the Beach Bldg., and they do need more Netting to keep away the birds.. We guard our plates.. You can go to the Main Buffet..as it is open for lunch also when the resort is busy, it is enclosed..
We did notice a bad smell around the Buffet Counters, sometimes, that keep the Cold Foods Cold.. Must have Freon Leak...
Nice clean room Good Air Conditioning and good view. Bed is hard..just ask for a Foam topper, we had no trouble getting one.
Very good staff everywhere.. Tip a little.. they deserve it.
Good Entertainment staff and Night shows. Don't miss Mexico night.
One day in buffet was the only time we notice One server giving attention to 2-3 tables of Mexican Nationals and not so much, to her other tables.. I asked another Staff person for her Name..Loudly.. That practice stopped right away.. Other that that we found all the Staff to be GREAT.
One thing the resort should try and stop ,are the People who go from Pool or Ocean..Soaking WET and right into the Lobby, or the Elevators...dripping and covered with sand. Floors can be dangerous when this happens, even with the Girls Mopping all the time.
Use your Safe.that is What they are there for. ...We never had any thing go missing.
When you arrive.. you are given a LOCK to push into the safe with the Key.. when you leave you must return BOTH the key and Lock ..plus your room key and towel card.
We had a great Holiday. and would go back to the resort.

Stayed at the Riu from June 9-15, 2013. We had a good time on our stay. But this hotel is flooded with locals, specially on weekends.

Food: Breakfast buffet was very good, lots of choices from omelets to fruits. Lunch was very repetitive. We preferred eating at Rafaels instead of Flamingos, the food there was cold. The buffet at nights was good, but there was very little to none of seafood choices. We did all three a la carta restaurants and they were all good.

Beach: the water is murky and the waves can be rough. One day you can go 50 yards and the water can be at waist level, the next you go 20 yards and covers you completely. They dont put up warning flags on the beach, so its swim at your on risk. WARNING: they dont have a lifeguard on duty.(there was one drowning incident during the week of our stay) Guess what happened afterwards. A red flag was put up. We never had a problem finding a chair in the beach on our week of stay. The waiters there were very good at bringing on the drinks, We tip them every day for their good work.

Rooms: Beds are hard and our TV didnt work. Did not mind about reporting the TV ,since We spend most of the time outside and not in the room. A/C worked very good. We had a room on the 4th floor overlooking the courtyard and beach, it is loud you can hear the noise, but then again we usually got back to our room after midnight and it was nice and quiet by that time.

Nightly Entertainment: Was very good, we enjoyed the nightly shows put up by the entertainment staff.

Overall: The hotel is nice, the staff is very friendly, The beach is nice but the water is murky. I booked this hotel really cheap, If you dont mind the many locals in this hotel and you book it at a low price, it is good to stay at. I will never stay at this hotel again nor at Nuevo Vallarta. I really enjoy the turqoiuse waters of the carribean.

Stayed at the Riu May 17-24, 2013 and overall we enjoyed our stay. Rooms were clean and value for money was good. Food was terrific and there is definitely a party atmosphere. The gym was fine for your cardio and basic weight machines and the kids pool was nice overall. The staff were extremely friendly and we were a family of 3 (2 adults and a 2 year old) and overall we enjoyed the stay. The beach was a bit grubby in the mornings from cigarette butts etc. and the location right on the beach is terrific and proximity to the airport was wonderful (about 15 minutes). The big disappointment occurred on our last few days as we were trying to arrange late check-out and were met at first with "this is no problem and of course " and when we went to pay for the late check-out fee a day later we were told we had to come back a day in advance. We went back 2 days in advance and were told that "the hotel just wants the money" from the front-desk staff and we could check again but now they doubted it was possible. My husband checked twice more and we ended up without any late check-out. Honestly, such a small thing was annoying to continue to try to arrange for it was annoying. Overall, a good stay and for the money it was overall just fine, but the lack of customer service was seriously irritating but at the end of the day a minor point overall.

Room Tip: If you need complete quiet try to get a room not overlooking the courtyard a there is a "party...

We just returned from our two week holiday at the Riu Vallarta from June 7-21,2013. I should have believed all the bad comments and reviews about this hotel. Where do I start? I booked a junior suite and a lot of things were either broken or not working properly in the room. Our first sign of a bad room is a safe with no lock, the lock was completely gone and never replaced. The jacuzzi tub worked for one day and then quit. We spoke to the front desk personnel on several occasions and finally after 10 days into the holiday they came and fixed it; which at that point they should have not bothered! The sink drain and tub drain were clearly not draining properly as it would plug so easily and to top if off the toilet was not flushing properly either and evenually overflowed! After speaking to other guests we learnt we were not only the one with air conditioning issues. Our thermostat never worked so it was either really cold or hot in the room, very uncomfortable with a 10 month old baby. I was promised a room with a crib and when we got to the room we had two beds pushed together; unbelievable for a so called five star hotel! To tops things off we had our souvenir stolen from the room after the cleaning lady cleaned our room..after questioning her she said she would bring it back later and never did. Alexander, the director was no help and the matter was never resolved! He didn't even offer to pay for the missing item; really unbelievable and laughable! I was later told by other guests that management here totally sucks and don't expect them to do anything especially Rachal because she has no authority over anything! I was told by management i would get an update and never did! The food made us sick after a few days into our vacation but with no outside restaurants nearby we were forced to eat the buffet food as the specialty restaurants offered were no better quality! We were so happy to take the taxi on a few occasions out of the resort to downtown Puerta Vallarta just to get away from the resort. The buffet staff however work very hard and tried to make our meals enjoyable, Joel was the most accomodating, management should take some lessons! The kids pool was very dirty and we didn't even want to take our baby back in after the first week so the vacation overall was not at all what we expected for the price we paid! We will not be returning to this resort and after speaking to other people on our flight home they all agreed they will not be returning to this resort either!

We returned to RIU Vallarta on June 7, for our 6th. stay. -Special Birthday,Anniversary and Fathers day all in a row.
We were Treated so Good by all the super Staff, that has made this resort so SPECIAL to us.
We do go to others resorts also, but return to the RIU's.

We wish to Thank Management::: Alexander M., Carlos C, and Raquel E for all the wonderful help and service. We could not have asked for a better holiday this time,, it was Truly great.

We met some lovely guests again from all over Mexico,USA,Canada..Hola to you All..

We understand a NEW Director started at the Vallarta just days after we arrived. If He READS this review... Please NOTE: some of the Special Staff I will mention here.(some at the resort for Years,,we remember the SMILES,
Bars:..Pedro.,Vanessa,Hector,Moy,Pablo,Isriel,Jose Luis,Zamjulio,Roy,Carolina,Lorena,Tereisa(sportsbar)
Sorry, I know I will miss a lot of others.....
Food/service: Yolanda,Helen,JodquinR(cook)
Security: Alexandro,Jerry,Uriel..they do their Best to watch over the children and keep people safe,at pools and ocean.
Desk: Salvador,Ramon.
Animation,Activities:: All were NEW to us, all seem very nice and do good job.
We can see why Riu Vallarta ,try to keep KIDS Out of the ADULT Only Pool.. as some of the activities and People do get CRAZY at times..therefor Not Appropriate for Children.IMHO.
Nightly shows,Same Same. It would be good if NOT every day is A Repeat the following Week. For guest who stay more than One week, something NEW would be Nice.
We went over to the Riu Jalisco a couple of times, as Riu Vallarta guests are allowed to go there. If People feel their Children should be allowed at a Swim UP Bar...you can take them over to the Jalisco,,zoo..,.lol.
Food and Drinks were Great.. Too Much to mention.. I did miss the Pecan PIE... lol.
Beer in fridge is Tecate, cans.,Hubby liked, I do Not., lots of water.. Just phone desk if you need More. Use your In Room Safe..Free..and that is what it is there for. We have Never had anything go missing from our room.
Shower's at Adult Pool need to be checked more,. ONE had Knob off or Head removed all the time. One working is Not Enough, shower off lots..... LoL.
Bus to PVR is just across the street..Easy and Fun to Do.
Thanks again to Everyone who Helped make our Stay so Good.

Room Tip: Rooms inside the U, that face the courtyard have good view, but they are Noise till 11pm. as everyon...

A lot of the negative comments you read here are true. We booked a trip to the Riu Vallarta for two weeks from June 8-22, 2013 with my sister, brother in law, and 7 month old son. We had read reviews about the locals prior to arriving, but the reality was nothing like we expected. The hotel was full of locals, and they receive priority service. The adult pool was a total gong show, with people being taken out of the pool and put into a wheelchair. After the nightly show, a Mexican band would play nightly. Normally I would enjoy the local culture, but you could tell it was strictly to cater to the local guests.

After 6 days, we took a walk up the beach to check out the Riu Palace Pacifico. It seemed so much cleaner and way better quality. We made the decision to pay extra to upgrade to the Palace, and it was the best decision. (Although, the front desk staff at the Riu Vallarta did not make it easy for us to upgrade) There were many more Americans and Canadians and very few locals (and the locals were classier) --- likely correlated to the price points between the two hotels.

Everything seemed like an improvement, from the rooms, service, food, even the taste of the water because they serve you bottled water. We preferred there being one large pool because we didn't ave to separate from our family going into the kids pool with their baby at the Riu Vallarta. Also, the pool was never a gong show like it was at the Vallarta. Overall, we were more than pleased with the Riu Palace Pacifico and was well worth the higher price. We would never go back to the Riu Vallarta though. Having been to at least 5 other Rius in Mexico and Dominican Republic, it was a disappointment. The Palace was in line with our expectations.
