“Rudest salesperson EVER”
Reviewed November 18, 2009

Attended a sales presentation. Went through normal battery of sales personnel as we stated we weren't interested. Then came Marc -- the last stage of high pressure. This person was the absolute rudest and simple-minded human we have ever encountered at any presentation. The Grupo Mayan has many things to offer but this a$$ completely turned us against the place. Get rid of this person and the place would be great. No means NO!

Yes it is a very nice place to relax. I will relate informatiom by subject as follows:

Timeshare Sharks: We read over, and over how this ruined many peoples vacation. After check in we had to go over to the other counter and get our cattle bands (arm bracelets). We had an amercan named Lester. He was not pushy, very kind, and helpful. We were out of there in 10 minutes. We just said we were not interested. They offered us 10% off the resort bill, and 2 massages or 100 USD. We were called once in the room, and just said no. I did not see this as any worse than anywhere else. Sure a lot of folks doing the breakfast presentation. Some of the poor saps were still at there tables in the afternoon. Yes a bit more that 90 minutes.

Pools: The 5 pools are great for both older, and younger. We did have to claim a spot before 8:00 AM. If you waited until noon you were SOL. Two of the pools have swim up bars, Two pools are for kids as they are a couple of foot deep. The wave pools are for kids, as the water is at most 4 foot deep. The slide was fun for me at 50 years old. The lazy river was really fun for my wife, and I to go round, and round several times a day. They used to charge for the use of the tubes each day. They are at no cost at this time.
The wooden chairs, and chase lounges are hard on your body. Get the fabric longes, and chairs if you can.

Beach: The beach in front of the Grand Mayan has nice sand. There are chairs, and lounges with pulupas for shade. A waiter will come over once in a while to take drink orders. This section of beach has strong undertoes, and rips. If you can stay touching bottom your fine. If you have a small child this is not an area to let them in the water. Don't count on the life guard to do anything. If your used to the ocean, and a good swimmer you'll enjoy being in the water. You can take long walks on the beach in either direction. The best section of beach for catching waves, and/or letting you small kids out in the water is down next to the jetty harbor entrance. You can walk down in 10 minutes, and the way the waves break is good. You can walk out here for a long distance, and there are no small rocks to hurt your feet. No undertoe, or rips. There is a shower to rince off before you go back to the pools.

Resturants/Food: We went to Wallmart, and cooked all but a few meals in our room. The hotel food was very expencive. We ate one meal, and one snak at the hotel. We had nachos, and split a pinacolada at the pool side food place by the wave pools. Forgot the name. The bill was 24 dollars, and the dirnk had NO booze in it. I felt ripped off. On a better note were caught a golf cart shuttle in front of the hotel entrance to Taco Break which we really liked. under two dollars a taco with lots of salsa, beer, soda, and desert for sale. The dinner here was under 20. for us both. Give the golf cart driver a 10 peso coin, and he is happy. We went to Quixote's Tapas Restaurant , you can walk to this place,They serve tapas. Not as good as Barcelonas downtown, but not bad. I ordered a martinni with vodka, and something was wrong, so I sent it back, and got one with gin. It was also awful. The bartender was putting water in the shaker with the booze, and ice. I paid 8 dollars for the drink. If you go better stick with sangria, or beer/wine. I hate getting ripped off with drinks. I would not got back. La Laguna Tino's was great. We took a cab for 30 pesos. Great service. Good drinks. I bought a bottel of tequla from them made by a local distillery I liked the flavor so much. You can not go wrong here. Very romantic on the small lagoon. We took a cab for 110 pesos to Buceria to eat at Claudio's Meson Bay. This was our best dinner out. Right on the beach. Wonderful wait staff. Drinks were great!!!!. Food was fantastic. We were there on the steak night. For 150 pesos, or 12 USD were got all you could eat salad, bread, and the grill master will serve you up chicken, churiso, pinapple, ribs, new york rib eye steaks. Man it was like being a king. They had a very good guitarist playing music. You could dance. We had a romantic walk on the beach before the waiter called a cab for us.

Room: We traded a two bedroom from Pagosa Springs Colorado for a two bedroom at the Mayan. The room was so big we did not even go into one third of it.Very nice room. Kitchen was good. Refer, microwave, cook top, blender, toaster, coffee maker. pots, and pans, silerware, plates, wine glasses, coffee cups, cutting board, lime squeezer. Make sure you bring a good sharp knife, or you'll be frustrated. If you drink the large bottle of water they leave you pay 4 bucks for it. Coffee was complementary. You'll pay if you use the computer to get on the internet. We nver used the computer. The room safe will set you back 30 USD. If you want to take a towell home with you that will be 40 USD. The room came with robes to ware. That was nice. TV with 100 channels of nothing just like home. The AC worked well. We had a room on the 9th floor with view of lagoon. I did not mind watching the fishermen, and all the activity on the back side of the hotel. The parking garage below had a loud fan motor running day, and night to remove CO2 from the garage. We got used to it after the first day. NOTE!!!!!!!!! Muy Importante!!!!!!!!!!. WATCH YOURSELF WALKING AROUND THE SITTING AREA IN THE ROOMS. THEY HAVE LOW COFFEE TABLES THAT ME, AND MY WIFE FELL OVER. WE SAW 10 PEOPLE AT THE RESORT WITH THERE ARMS IN SLINGS. THE TABLE GOT THEM. IN MEXICO YOU CAN NOT SUE OVER TRIPPING, AND BREAKING YOU LEG ON A COFFEE TABLE. AT MY WIFES REQUEST I PUT THIS IN BOLD TYPE. STACK PILLOWS, OR SOMETHING ON THEM, AND SAVE YOURSELFS.

Check-in/check-out: Check in took us over an hour becuase of the long line. Check out the night before or before 8:00 am, and you be the only one at the counter. They charged us a 3% tax per day on our bill. I had read about this from others. I did object, but got no where with it. I did ask what 3% was being calculated on. They said it was 3% per day on your RCI yearly membership fee. I did not get to out of wack over a 4 USD per day charge. At the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs we pay a 7 per day use tax. Take a copy of you RCI membership fee, and it may help keep them in line. I am one of those wierd people who read the resort policies that are left on the tables in the rooms. If you check out after 10:00 AM you will pay the prvailing rate for one day extra. Our room rack rate was at over 900 per day. You best check out before the deadline bucko.

Other stuff: The consiare was great. Very helpful. Sorry I can not spell that french word, but you know what I mean. The staff was wonerful 5 start service. The maids who kept the rooms clean, and rolled back the covers were great!!. They leave that god awful Hershys chocolate on the bed. We did not eat it. The guards did there job with out being dificult. I took my cattle band off for the last half of the week. They noticed, but did not make a big deal of it.

Summary: Great hotel with good service, but they are going to nickel, and dime you to your grave.

Myself, fiance and two friends took a trip to Nuevo Vallarta from October 17th-24th and stayed at the Grand Mayan. After reading many reviews on here I am excited to say that I had no issues with the timeshare sharks at all. We exchanged a week through RCI and made it perfectly clear at check-in that we were not interested in their breakfast or any "deals" they could make for us. Tell them you already have a itinerary for the week or that you are under the age of 30. They cannot sell to anyone under 30. They called once the next morning and after that we were left alone.

The entrance was magnificant. The statues were very large but not as intimidating as people made them out to be. The entire staff from the bellhops, to the front lobby, to the pool bartenders, to the concierges desk were extremely helpful and always had a smile on their faces. The maid service was second to none and they even came in every night to turn down our sheets and place hershey kisses by our pillows.

The Grand Master Suite was more than enough room for four people. You could have fit another four people with us comfortably. We enjoyed breakfast in our room every morning. The balcony, although on the rear of the main building, had a nice view of the Sierra Madre Mountains and the golf course. The dipping pool was an added bonus that came in handy on a couple of occasions.

The grounds of the Grand Mayan were immaculate. There was never a time when trash was around. All the flowers, grass and trees were constantly being cared for. The lobbies, elevators and common areas were spotless.

The pool was awesome. It had two swim up bars, two wave pools, a kids play area and a water slide. The water slide although short provided a lot of fun for this 35 year old kid. They have activites for adults and kids all day long at the main pool to keep you busy if you are lying around the resort. They also have a lazy river that goes around the pool area. This is where we spent most of our time floating with a beverage of choice in hand. To put the myth to rest...from 1pm-3pm they crank the jets up and the lazy river becomes the crazy river with waves. It was so much fun!!!

A few helpful tips: 1) Use their transportation service from the airport as it is a mad house when you land. You can set this up through the concierge desk prior to arriving. 2) Use the ATM to withdrawl money as you get a higher exchange rate from the bank that the ATM represents then you do through the resort. DONOT EXCHANGE AT THE AIRPORT. 3) See the rest of my reviews for the area and feel free to email me. 4) Have fun!!!

Grand Mayan is surely beautiful, with some definate negatives. We did not have an ocean view,... instead we looked at a garage for 8 dayss. But we expected that given it was a by one get one free condo. The Rooms are nice but definately time for a remodel the beds is HARD.. The couches in Living are more comfortable. The staff and service are EXCELLENT, with the exception of the bellman. If you have a car be prepared for paying parking fees and the bellman chase you and will cahrge you even if the car only sits for 10 minutes. For kids the waves pools and kids area are excellent, but the 20 minute walk to the beach is tiresome. Many positives and negatives.. but would not stay again I am afraid. I would be willing to try elseware. The room service was the best food on the property and the most arrofrdable in my opinion and I definately am not a room service person ! OH and needed maintenance numerous times during the week .. Please remodel soon !!

We were there for 8 days and enjoyed every minute of it after the initial timeshare presentation. They lie about length and VERY HIGH pressure to buy right then.
Just don't go to it and all will be well!
Hotel is very comfortable & clean. We did have a towel rack come off the wall, nearly missing my child's head but the management promptly apologised and repaired it swiftly. Service was excellent at pools, cafes and in rooms. The kids Club & staff and Activities Center people were all fantastic! It is a good value for families who enjoy traveling in Mexico. The adjoining hotels (Myan Palace & Sea Garden) were closed but this had very little impact on our experience. We did not play golf so no comment there but did use the gym & spa and both were just medium-good (staff @ both - outstanding).
We really enjoyed Napalito's restaurant in the Paradise Village mall 3 minutes away.
We would go back again given the opportunity.
