My rep Melida Gomez is a consummate professional as well as a charming and extremely interesting Venezuelan. I had not been back to the Nuevo property since 2008 because my wife and I have been exploring all the other Vida properties in the last 6 years. We honeymooned here and wanted to check it out again. Melida answered all my questions regarding ownership and was most helpful during our tour. I shall return, again and again.

I enjoy my stay at the Grand Mayan all the time. It´s a wonderful property. I truely feel like I´m on vacation when I visit this destination. I talked to Carlos S. to see about other options about my next stay. He was very informative and courteous. It was a pleasure to see that he was very professional and not assertive. I told him that I was in the midst looking at my finances and will get back to him at a later time. He was very gracious about it. I would very highly recommend this property to all my friends and colleagues. Muchas Gracias!

I love the Grand Mayan , the lazy river and the pools are great , we bought a time share before whit fees and assessment , I talk to Enrique and Claudia booth member brokers and they put an offer to remove all the fees of my old time share contract to No more renewal fees and assessments , I have been coming to Mayan since 1999 and each year there has been continuous improvements to an already grand resort. I will come back every year.

Room Tip: If you talk to Enrique he can get you a good room

We stayed at the Grand Mayan back in 2008 and were excited to go back. We booked one 2bdrm condo for two weeks, one 2bdrm condo for one week and one 1bdrm condo for one week through RCI.

There were eight people in our party (five adults, three children). A month before we left we arranged complimentary airport transportation through the concierge. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, immigration was a breeze and finding our transportation representative was easy. The bus was nicely air conditioned and the seats were comfortable. We were dropped off at the motor lobby and our luggage was quickly accounted for, put onto a covered cart and locked up. The bell boy gave us a piece of paper with the cart number and phone number to call when we arrived in our room. We then walked to the Santuario (beautiful!) and caught a golf cart to The Grand Mayan. We quickly found out that it was only a five minute walk from the Santuario to the hotel, so for the rest of our stay we hoofed it instead of waiting on the carts. Check in was fast (it was around 4pm) and they were very accommodating and found three rooms on the same floor (3334, 3356, 3360). The timeshare wrangler tried hard to get us to go to their update breakfast, but after we said no about 10 times, they finally believed us! When we arrived in the rooms we call the bell boy for our luggage and it arrived within 15 minutes. The bracelet/room key worked well for most of the trip. A couple of us had to go once and have them reprogrammed, but it only happened once in the two weeks. We knew we were not getting ocean views, but the views we had - 3334 actually had a peek-a-boo view of the ocean - were decent! Our rooms were incredibly clean, albeit a little worn. There were plenty of dishes in the two bedroom units for all of us to have a meal together. The only downside is you have to wash all the dishes by hand (I know, first world problem!). Our unit had a few maintenance issues, but all were very quickly dealt with. The beds were indeed hard and we called for an egg crate cushion. Instead we got a feather bed, which was ok, but it wasn't pocketed and the feathers all piled up in the middle of the bed by the morning, which defeated the purpose!

The resort grounds have changed considerably in the six years since we had first visited. It is quite an expansive and lush property now. We found it very easy to navigate and quickly learned our way around using the new wooden boardwalks. One morning we wanted to go to the Sea Garden and asked the attendant in front of the lobby how to get there. He was super friendly and told us we could use the employee entrance/exit to get to the back street, even though all the signs say no guests. He explained the signs are there because at night there are no lights on the back street and it is dangerous for the guests. The resort wanted to install lights, but the road is federal property and the government said no.

We had dinner at Havana Moon one night and it was perfect - seating is outside overlooking the beach and sunset was beautiful. The food was good and decently priced. There are golf carts that stop right outside the restaurant and will take you back to the hotels if you need it, or if it is too dark to navigate back. We also ate meals at The Sea Garden (Sunday Brunch, delicious and a great bargain) and Sweet Paris in La Plaza (wonderful savory and sweet crepes). One night we had appetizers and drinks at the Santuario and watched the shows (a jazz trio, show tunes/cabaret singer, the Bubbleman and the Mayan Warriors). We had frozen yogurt at the shop in La Plaza and we all agreed the yogurt had a hollow, bland taste.

La Plaza is a great addition to the property. They are still working on the top floors, but the bottom floors house several different retailers. My husband said it is like shopping at IKEA - you have to walk through the whole place to get to what you want! There is a clothing shop, frozen yogurt shop, bakery, chocolate shop, liquor store, very small book store, pharmacy, cheese shop, meat shop and finally the grocery store! Prices are a little higher than the Mega or Walmart, but you are not having to use a taxi and in the long run you are saving money by shopping there. It had everything we wanted, including Tillamook cheese (we are from Oregon and this was a pleasant surprise!).

The pools and beach are still wonderful. We never had a problem finding chairs, even later in the morning and for all eight of us. We found the pool in front of Samba was HOT and the the further towards the beach you swam the colder it got. Service at the pools and beach was great. Servers were very attentive and checked on you a lot. We got a big kick watching the servers ride around on Segway's with trays of food! There are beach vendors, but they do not bother you at all if you politely say 'No Gracias.' Happy Hour is from 12-1 and instead of 2 for 1 all cocktails are 50% off. They Nachos con Pollo are simple and delicious.

Our three girls attended the Kids Club twice and had fun. For only 150 pesos/child/day it is a HUGE bargain! The kids were there 9:30am-4:30pm and played soccer and volleyball on the beach, did several crafts including painting pottery and puppets, face painting, swimming and the price also covers lunch (either hamburger or chicken fingers) and drinks and snacks, including ice cream. The price of a hamburger poolside is 150 pesos, so, like I said, BARGAIN!!

Last note is about housekeeping. Those women work hard and deserve a large tip! We noticed their supervisors come and check their work at least once a week. I was in awe over what the supervisor looked for - dust under tables, dust in the cutouts in closet doors, how clean the sinks were. They are dedicated to making sure your room is clean. I was impressed.

We are sad RCI only allows you to trade into the Grand Mayan once every five years. Needless to say we are looking on VRBO, EBay and RedWeek.com for weeks to rent next year! Can't wait to get back - the resort is beautiful and there is definitely something for everyone. The weather was perfect the whole two weeks, temps in the high 80's each day. The service is top-notch.

Room Tip: Don't be bummed if you don't get ocean view. As long as you are floor 3 or higher you will...

This was again one of our most enjoyable holidays. From the time of the booking till the time of our departure, I felt comfortable with the service. On arrival we were warned not to stop to talk to the numerous "sales guys" posing as the grand mayan agent and walk straight through till we met the Mayan agent. He took charge of us and our baggage and within minutes we were at the resort. With the new change our bags were taken over and we were directed to the front desk and registration. We were given the room, unfortunately it was not what we wanted, and ocean view room even though we were owners. I now understand that being an owner does not gaurantee an ocean view room though the second week we were moved to a ocean view room thanks to the personal efforts by the supervisor, Alexandro and some others. The conciege was exceptionally helpful, especially Patricia who treated us as though we were the only people staying there. The entire staff were exceptionally courteous. The food was very good maybe slightly pricey, compared to the restaurants in the area. The drinks too were on the expensive side. We went to a presentation given by Mr. Rock who was not as pushy as had been in the previuos times, but yet there was an underlying desire from the company to make us spend more, though Mr. Rock respected our position. My wife did some exercise classes which were free and was very impressed by the instructors in the pool. We took spanish classes and was most impressed by the teachers.
Overall we are most impressed by the resort the people and the exceptional cleanliness and comfort of the rooms. We do not see this anywhere in the US. We look forward to going back next year hopefully with our 2 little grand children.

Room Tip: Book early and request room at the time of booking but no gaurantte.

~ long review alert...with some helpful tips.

We arrived at Puerto Vallarta Airport at about 10:30AM.

~~Helpful tip--Note to all passengers, when you are filling in entry forms while on the plane make sure and fill in EVERYTHING including the BOTTOM part, if you don’t fill in bottom portion, you will be stopped by Mexican officials and asked to fill it in before proceeding to customs.
~~Customs--For us, going through customs and getting our luggage took about 15 minutes; we received a green light, so it went quickly.
Stepped outside and were welcomed with the beautiful warmth and sunshine of Mexico. Right next door to the airport is a gas station...stopped and picked up a case of beer for the short trip (about 15 minutes) to the Grand Mayan!

~~ Arrival at Resort --Arrived at the 'taxi' and luggage area, our luggage was loaded onto the luggage cart, it has a 'tarp' wrapped around it, they secure it with a coded zip tie, and give you a receipt. Once you have your room, call the number on receipt, and your luggage will be delivered to your room.

~~Check-in...First we are not owners; we were guests of Grand Luxxe owners and they own several weeks. We were staying in Grand Mayan, while the owners and another couple were staying at Grand Bliss. We stood in line a short time, to find out there was not an ocean view room available, and so the receptionist told us he had a third floor room, we wanted to see it prior to saying yes, receptionist took us to the room and we were completely fine with room and its view. How much time do you spend in your room anyway? We went back down to front desk, proceeded to finish checking in.

~~ Wristband desk--Next up is the wristband desk, because of prior negative trip reviews on this; we were not looking forward to this. But, we also understand that these people have a job to do, like many of us, and we have to remember this is their job. Yes, we were asked about signing up for the tour presentation, however we politely and firmly told them “No”, we told them we weren’t interested and didn’t have time because of other commitments. We were given our wristbands, which also serve as your room keys, oh, how I loved this! Best invention ever!! I also want to mention, we were called in our room by the time share salespeople two days later. Once again we thanked them for their time, but politely told them no, and we didn’t hear back from them again. Not once did we ever encounter timeshare people at pools, beaches, lobby's approaching us, we did see them taking others on tours, but not walking around asking people. Just remember, this is their job, if you don't want to go on a sales presentation, you have the power to say no. Most good salespeople wait until they have heard no a couple of times or more, so be prepared to say no several times.

~~Helpful tip --If you are going to be using your credit card, it always a good idea before
going out of the country to call your credit card company and tell them that you are traveling to Mexico or wherever. I have seen it happen a couple of times that your card will be declined because when using it in foreign countries, the credit card companies think it could be fraud. Better to prepare ahead of time, than find yourself having to try and call your credit card company from the US, and then having to call from Mexico.

~~Rooms --We were on third floor, not ocean view, but we felt the room exceeded
our expectations!
~ Perfect size kitchenette, included coffee maker, blender, toaster, fridge,
and dishes. Suggestions-- bring your own coffee, filters, sugar and creamer. Do no use the small coffee supplies and the large bottle of water they have on hand, you will be charged if you do, and it wasn't cheap. We didn’t drink the water, we purchased large bottles from Wal-Mart, which is a short cab ride away; you can pick up groceries there.
~ Living room/ dining area, large kitchen table with four chairs, two couches
that also had pull out beds underneath a large TV on an entertainment center which stored extra blankets and pillows.
~ Deck was large and it had a small pool on it, which filled each morning and emptied each evening, the noise was loud while it was filling don't know if they are all that loud, but ours was annoying to listen to every morning at 8:00AM. Because our pool got sun most of the day, it was actually pretty warm. Two lounge chairs on deck.
~ Big bedroom with a king bed, TV, sofa, dressers chairs, and a tub.
~ Bathrooms...glass doors for both shower and toilet area. Showers were great we had plenty of hot water and very good pressure. Leave your shampoo and lotion at home; they supplied a large bottle of both and lots of good soaps as well. Large counter with two sinks and another small dressing area with sink. Blow dryer in our room did work, but it was an older model.
~We had a safe in our room and don't know if there are typically charges to this, but because the owner is a Grand Luxxe owner we received that free.
~ Also we received free Wi-Fi. It was available around most of the grounds, but it was somewhat slow at times, did work fine for what we needed it for.

~ Grounds--this is a HUGE resort! Grand Luxxe, Grand Bliss and Grand Mayan are the three main resorts on the grounds. I believe if you are owners at Grand Luxxe you can use any of the resorts pools and other areas. If you are owners at Grand Bliss, I believe you can use GB and GM. Lastly if you are owners at Grand Mayan, you use GM pools and GM areas I'm not 100% sure of this, but it believe this to be true. The entire resort is amazing! Beautiful grounds, wonderful walkways and great and numerous pools. (Even some very heated pools, which were nice in the evenings) This is a huge complex, but I never felt that it was crowded. There are many pools, swim up bar pools, kid’s pools, activities pool, lazy river and many more. Not to mention the beach area. . The resort is big, no, make that huge! But, you make it as big as you want to...you can find some chairs and or a swim up bar and stay put all day, or you can wonder around from pool bar to beach and resort to resort and put on lots of miles. The choice is yours. I stayed at the beach a lot, and our friends were near the pool area. Honestly, this resort is top notch for the beautiful grounds, and I wouldn't change a thing! I would recommend wearing some type of footwear while walking around, as the cement got very hot and it was also very rough on the feet.

~~We had Grand Luxxe wristbands on, and because of this were able to have access to more things and more areas than if you had a Grand Mayan (red) wristband on. We were given towel cards, which we never used because our wristbands allowed you to just get them. We were able to go to Grand Luxxe pool area, where they bring you a cold wash cloth to cool your face in the heat of the day, and come around and clean your sunglasses, the pool chairs were also are padded.

~~Short-Cut—as others haven mentioned, walking to and from some areas can take some time, there are shuttles to use from one hotel to the next, and makes it much easier. If you are just walking from Mayan to Bliss or taxi area, there is a short cut. When you get out of the elevator, go to your left, there is a hallway that says employees only, walk through there, a few steps and you are outside, take the road up the hill and this will save you a lot of walking.

~~Beach- nice beach, employees worked hard to keep it clean, lots of chairs and lots of papalas, to lie under. One thing I really liked was that there were a lot of chairs open, and you didn’t need to put a book and a towel on it. Lots of vendors on beach, because the beach is not owned by the resort, it’s really not something the resort can stop. I was asked countless times by vendors to buy there, “it’s almost free,” junk, finally I just told them I need to relax and please stop asking me. Water temp was nice, water is not the pretty blue you get on the Caribbean side, and so snorkeling off shore is not good.
~Charging to your room –You don’t have to bring cash or credit cards with you throughout the day because all things will be charged to your room. Cash and credit cards are not accepted until you check out. Things can add up quickly, especially if you spend some time at swim up bars. We used Happy Hour quite a bit, and we also purchased beer from Wal-Mart and brought that with us to the beach or pool. Right or wrong, we always brought it with us, no one approached us and told us to stop, but we brought can cozies from home, kept a bucket from when we did buy a bucket of beer. We had a small bag cooler, and along with bucket which was covered with a towel. It saved us quite a bit of money in doing this. I know the resort probably doesn’t want you to be doing this, because this is where they get a lot of revenue, but they also have to understand that not everyone can afford the high prices they charge for beverages. Beer is never on the happy hour discount.
~~Entertainment—Nightly shows were held in the Santuario. This area is beautiful! During the day the center area is a large decorative pool, at night the floor raises and they move furniture out on the floor, and it also becomes the stage. We did get to one show and seen some very talented performers singing, dancing, a guy making the coolest things using bubbles, and many other acts. We sat down, and were told they have a cover charge and if you want to waive that fee, you will need to buy drinks. In my opinion, if they didn’t charge a cover they would get a lot more guests coming to the nightly shows.
~~Swim-up Bar –I need to mention this, because we had a lot of fun at the Grand Bliss swim up bar. There were two waiters there, Daniel and a man they called Vitamin, and both of these bartenders were amazing. They make great drinks, and they treat all the guests with so much care and respect. If you want great service and good drinks take a minute and go to the swim-up pool bar at the Grand Bliss.
~~Spa—we received deep tissue massages here, we thought they did a very good job; this area was very nice, quiet relaxing area. We didn’t utilize all the different things that were available here, but wanted to mention the massages were great.

~~Fitness area—if you are looking to keep up with your workouts, you won’t have any difficulty doing it. You can walk around the entire resort, passing many other walkers. Or you can go to the fitness area, where you will find many different rooms, some with treadmills, bikes, elliptical and another workout room with everything your clubs have back home. Water and towels were provided, and it was nice to receive an apple on the way out.
~~Checkout—Want to save some time? Check out the evening before you go home, you won’t have to fight the crowds! (You can stay in your room until next morning’s check out time) Make sure and look at all the charges that are placed on your bill, we found a couple of things that were charged to us, and they weren’t ours.

Thanks for reading this far! That about completes my review, I end all of my reviews with saying the following: Please do NOT hesitate to email me with any further questions. I look at the glass half full not half empty, I will be honest with you but you have to remember what I might think is the best, you might not think the same. Tell me what your expectations are and I will tell you if I 'think'' it will be a good match.

Yes the food and drinks are expensive, and be careful to what's included and what's not (I.e coffee for your room). However, every single person I dealt with was fantastic, they are always calm even during chaotic check in and check out hours!! I loved my stay, room was BEAUTIFUL! Ugh loved it. My only disappointment was the soaker tub on the balcony was freezing water... Would have loved a heated outdoor tub or even hot tub. It ended up being a waste to even have it on the balcony. The service is amazing and thorough. I would recommend to anyone. Beautiful stay! Easy and fair taxi rates off grounds as well.
