Our visit to the Grand Mayan during Christmas week was exactly what we were looking for. What you see in the pictures is exactly what the grounds and rooms offer. The pools, slide and lazy river were a hit with the kids. Daily housekeeping is always a plus. Samba resturant (informal) was more to our liking, we mostly ate out in Nuevo Vallarta or Puerto Vallarta. The upkeeping of the grounds and rooms was up to par. Beach was ok. Though the resort was 95% full, the service was not impacted. Only thing that could have been better was the view, our 2 bedroom room was overlooking their service area. Other than that, it was a great stay, can't wait to go back!

The Grand Mayan is either exactly what you are looking for or exactly what you want to avoid. it all depends upon what you seek in a resort and a vacation.

On the plus side:

The Grand Mayan's grounds are beautiful. In a complex that includes four other hotels (Grand Luxxe, Grand Bliss, Mayan Palace, and Sea Garden), there are miles of walkways through sumptuous grounds. With perhaps 8-10 restaurants on site, you never have to leave if you don't want to. The food was quite good (though not cheap) and service was provided with a smile in every case.

There is plenty of room at several pools, and you can walk for perhaps half a mile up and down the lovely beach. A lazy river allows you to circle one quarter of a mile in an inner-tube. I did that perhaps 4-5 times during our stay.

We stayed in a two-bedroom suite with a living room, kitchen, and two bathrooms. Fold-out sofas in the living room allow this suite to accommodate up to eight people. The suite was spacious and comfortable. We would have preferred an ocean view, but the marina view from our sixth floor was very nice (and we were informed that the ocean views were reserved for people attending time share presentations. We demurred, as we already own a unit in Maui).

Everyone at the resort is willing to help, and it is clear that most employees subsist on tips (many informed us that they earned $5 per day in regular salary). I was struck at how young most employees were. My estimate is that the average age was mid-20's.

Finally, one of our party fell ill during the stay, and the hotel has a doctor on site 24 hours per day for a reasonable fee.

The cons:

This is not the place for an authentic local experience. For that, you need to leave the grounds - which in itself is no mean feat. If you are looking for tranquility, stay in a smaller hotel (in fact, if you are looking for authenticity and tranquility, you may wish to stay in Puerto Vallarta instead of Nuevo Vallarta).

We found the Grand Mayan to be somewhat officious in its rules and expectations. For example, even though we paid over $1,000 for food while on site, we neglected to sign a ticket for $12 worth of coffee (and received calls at 10:45PM and 11:45PM asking us to get out of bed to sign the ticket). We found this odd considering that we provided our room number when ordering and told them over the phone that we did indeed have the coffee and had no trouble with the charge. Additionally, you are provided towel cards at the beginning of your stay, and you are charged a fee if you do not return the towel cards when you check out. Guests are not permitted to take their own suitcases to their rooms and instead must go through a time-consuming and inefficient process before having access to luggage.

We also experienced conflicting information regarding the use of cash on site. Allegedly, everything is charged to your room, but we were told that we had to pay the doctor in cash (thanks to the general manager, Mr. Lapp, for correcting this error). After checking out, we ate at the crepe shop in the Mayan Palace and we were told they would only take pesos (their credit card machine oddly did not work). Converting a small amount of dollars to pesos required my passport (for $50?).

Finally, there really is a lot of pressure to tip - and this is related to the low salaries cited above. Rather than put the onus on the guests, Grupo Mayan is exhorted to pay their employees better living wages.

Overall, it is difficult not to be impressed with Grand Mayan and the entire complex. If you like a "self-enclosed" vacation, this is the perfect place for you. If you are more of an independent traveler and want many other options for food and activities, you will likely be happier elsewhere.

As a disclaimer, we are owners in the Grand Luxxe property for the last year and a half.
There are several aspects to the review.
1) resort itself - I think s outstanding. We were staying this week in the Grand Mayan, and because we "traded down" from the Luxxe we were provided a great room, high floor with phenomenal views of the bay and sunsets. There are endless pools of all shapes and sizes. A bit of a problem with temperature regulation as some of the pools were too hot for the environment. There is also a kiddie pool with several structures and slides that are 4 year old loved and two wave pools. We took advantage of tennis under the lights. The courts were very nice, but can be upgraded to match the high end nature of the property. We did not play golf but the course looked to be in great shape. There are many restaurants on the property and two highlights for us were Gong (an very upscale Asian place) and the newly opened (Monday the 23rd) La Plaza. Our party of seven celebrated my mom's birthday at Gong and had a spectacular meal. The service and food were outstanding. Comparable to any very high end Asian restaurant in the states. Prices were high in a vacuum, but completely reasonable given that this is a resort. La Plaza is a collection of "shops" including a butcherie, patisserie, bakery, winery, cheese shop, market, clothing boutique, frozen yogurt and creperie. We partook of the creperie and the apple brulee crepe amazing. Prices were actually more reasonable at these shops. It will grow into a great addition for the resort. The spa and gym were terrific.
Other activities included the turtle release which is always a big, big hit with the kids. And, a Marietas Island scuba snorkel trip (see additional review), off road adventure (see additional review) both with Vallarta Adventures. They are an first class organization with an amazing staff. Also, did a walking food tour of the city with Vallarta Eats. They were extremely nice and accommodating of dietary restrictions, but a couple of the stops actually fell a bit short for me on the food (not good if you are a food tour).
2) A couple of issues primarily with sales and service. While everyone at the resort is amazingly friendly and nice, it is sometimes hard to get things actually done. At different times the spa desk, concierge, travel desk and front desk, promised they would get things done for us, only to not do anything. They did not make any effort to take the initiative and to make things happen. Yes, as friendly as can be, but you really have to push and to stay on top of them if something needs to be done.
3) We participated in a sales update and for us (as previous owners) was very helpful and worthwhile. As someone from the outside, know this will take 4 - 5 hours. It is high pressured and intense. I have made several comments to the resort that they should tone down the sales vultures and let the resort stand on its own merits - it certainly can.
Great, great week at the resort. Looking forward to our next trip. Beware service and sales.

We traded a high end week at the Pueblo Bonito for this hotel. We got offered a hotel room with no kitchen on the 2nd floor overlooking the parking. Supposedly nothing else available. And.....the room wasn't even ready at 5:30 pm. NEVER again!!!!!

The resort is a very nice resort with lots of pools and activities. But don't let this fool you and keep reading.
My wife and I, plus 2 more families traveled to this property with high expectations. We all booked 1 bedroom suites using time share benefits. When we check in we asked to be close together and were told that they cant do it. So we stayed on the 1st floor and our friends were on the 5th and 6t floors. Our room (3180) smell humid (like mold). We called the front desk and they send a cleaning lady who sprayed some "lemon" type of smell. Next they send in 2 more guys to change the AC filters to no avail. It turned out that our friends room were smelly as well (not as bad as ours). the next morning we went to the concierge and ask to change the room. We were told to come back at 11AM and they will change it. We went back at 11AM and were told that they found a new room on the 5th floor. We went together with the concierge to check the room and it was as bad as the first one. Then we were offered to move to the 9th floor (room # 3966) which we found better but not Oder free. We took it and most nights my wife would wake up for luck of good air. We were told that because of the high humidity in the area this kind of smell is typical but I don't think this is the case.

Room Tip: I would try and avoid this place but if you end up staying try and get an ocean view room

I stayed at the Grand Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta for 2 weeks and 1 week at the Grand Luxxe. I was impressed with the beauty of the pools, landscaping, water features, boardwalks and trails across a huge resort where you can always find a pool chair, comfortable place to read or walk, beaches with no vendors and plenty of uncrowded beach and walkways.

The rooms and grounds are maticulously maintained and beautiful. There is free entertainment every night in the Santuario which is a beautiful place with seating on all four sides and in the middle of water areas with multiple entertainers.

What I didn't like were the prices of the restaurants and anything extra like the WiFI cost me $85 US per week at Grand Mayan. (It is free at Grand Luxxe) and valet parking is only option and that was another $30US per week. Drinks are about $9 to $10 for margarita or pina colota. or glass of wine.

Room Tip: I had to do the dreaded tour to get my room upgraded to ocean view from low floor parking garage vie...

This was my second time here, last time was in 2007.

Pools are huge, lazy river...awesome.

Rooms are kinda smelly but my biggest gripe with the GM is the fact that now if you want to leave the complex it will take you about 20 minutes to do so. In order to take a cab, it will take you at least 20-30 minutes from the time you close your hotel door until the time you get into a cab.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room!

We truly appreciate the time you have taken to share with us your impression about your stay at The Grand Mayan. We are grateful for your preference as we always like to welcome back guests, and we are veryhappyto learn you enjoyed our accommodations, our spectacular pools and lazy river.

It is important to point out that our Nuevo Vallarta resorts have one main entrance and exit for guests; and one service entrance. A pedestrian pathway to the main gate is available at the Santuario’s Motor Lobby, as well as electric shuttle transportation.
