“Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Review”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

Great experience overall! Pools, beach, rooms and resort overall are top notch. Very well maintained and service met all expectations. Definitely take a short walk from resort towards Marina Nuevo Vallarta and eat breakfast at Eddies and a wonderful Italian dinner at Guido's. Do not miss a 5 min taxi ride to eat at Fajita Republic (order mango margarita, cheese sticks served in lava rock bowl) Sounds strange to even mention this, but a must visit short taxi ride is the new Walmart. This is not like a normal Walmart. One of the nice bakeries I have ever seen in a grocery store. All the fresh fruit and vegetables, sandwich shops, etc are outstanding! Quick Stock up at OXXO (similar to a 7/11 quick mart) are right off property. The grocery store onsite is very reasonable. Trust Vallarta Adventures to be your one stop for activities. We did the Dolphin encounter and walked to it from the resort. First class experience! We found that going into downtown PV was only a one time thing. Beautiful beach views, very clean and lot of new infrastructure around cruise ship terminals.. The nightlife looks like a lot of fun, but we have younger boys with us so did not check out. Wifi is available for free outside of resort only. Did not find anything on resort that wasn't without a significant cost. Onsite golf course is outstanding! We also did Flamingo Golf Course (20 min taxi ride) to save money. I would choose to stay in Nuevo Vallarta over downtown PV. We did spent one night at Westin PV at Marina and would rate very high, but not a place I would spend entire week.

We went with another family (total 7 people in a 2 bedroom unit) and it was great! The children who ranged from 1.5 to 7 years old all had a great time. There is plenty to do with the lazy river, wave pools, water slides, and regular pools. The food was a bit pricey for what you get, but you're paying for the convenience of not leaving the resort. You can also go to the market on property which has most of what you need at a fair prices. If you want to watch your spending, then have one meal on property each day and prepare your own for the other two.

The entrance to the hotel is a bit over the top and the "Mayan" aspects were a bit cheesy, but the amenities can't be beat and the resort is very clean. I would definitely recommend this place for families with young children.

My entire vacation was ruined by the management of the Grand Myan. Was convinced to do the "free breakfast presentation", was told 90 min including breakfast and that was a complete lie. The gifts that were promised have so many conditions attached they are very difficult to be able to use or they just refuse to honor them. We checked out the night before because we saw many issues on the bill. They like to add things to your bill so you need to keep a close eye and keep all your charge receipts. We even talked to a member of the staff and he also said that he has to watch his receipts because they try to add things to his bills. They treat RCI members like crap. During the sales presentation they were even bad mouthing RCI on how they cheat their members. The management was very unprofessional and as we were arguing with them on their unethical billing practices we were threatened with security being called if we continued to question our final bill.

They try to nickel and dime you for every thing. $95 a week for Internet. That is only good for one device and good only in the room and not around the resort. Got it on my iPad but was not available on my phone unless I paid another $95. You will also get charged for using the safe in the room. I have never in my life heard of a hotel charging for the safe in the room. Too many charges for very little service.

The only thing good i can say about the place is housekeeping is professional and very pleasant.

The Resort is a typical Grand Mayan. Very Beautiful, tropical. The grounds are still being developed so there was a bit of building noises. This resort is great for children of all ages. Lazy River, Wave pools, Slide and numerous pools and restaurants to eat at. You can also go to the adjacent Hotels to eat but be aware, the food and drinks are expensive! The happy hour or two for one are good deals. You can walk a short distance to the Marina, there are a few restaurants close by, more authentic and better prices. The local bus is very close this will get you anywhere, a short ride to PV (about 15 mins) or north to Bucerias or other surfing towns. The cab system is also very useful, the prices are supposed to be set but the odd time you will get a cab going over that amount so recommend knowing and definitely asking before getting in.
The 2 bedroom unit was spacious and very nice with a small cooling pool on the deck. Beds are hard. Two separate bedrooms and bathrooms with family area in middle, great for 2 families. Nice little kitchen for snacks and breakfast. Groceries you can get at the Mega market not far away or new Walmart also close by cab or bus. Overall very enjoyable.

If you prepare yourself for crazy time share hard sells then you'll get past it and have an amazing experience.

Luxury timeshare exceeds expectations. The rooms are spacious and immaculate. In fact the whole property is so clean we were thoroughly impressed and relieved as we were traveling with two year old twins. The staff were so helpful and lovely. Nicer than American counterparts. Great on premises dining options including room service where they not only remembered that we had small children but were accommodating to our needs. Our toddlers out-ate us at breakfast where we laughed that their buffet was free. I liked the traditional Mexican options offered at meals too because otherwise it felt a little like California.

The gym was fantastic as well if that's your thing. We're not folders although my father loves playing their courses.

We were nervous to go at first ... Mexico... Traveling with babies... Water portability. I swear we considered a back of plan of the Four Seasons up the road. Boy were we wrong.

The grounds are lush and gorgeous. The child- friendly pool and beach areas are pretty amazing. The beach was also immaculate.

It was with great anticipation that we traveled to Nuevo Vallarta, MX, to check in at the new Grand Mayan.

Our first hint of “paradise lost” came when we checked in and were directed to the desk where we were pressured to sign up to attend a breakfast/tour sometime during our stay. Knowing that this translates to a timeshare presentation, we declined. The next day we received a call in our room informing us that we must attend the presentation to obtain an ocean view room in the future. We declined.

Next, we discovered that earplugs were needed as we encountered 24/7 construction and maintenance noise from our room on a daily basis ranging from roof work and power washing around the pool area beginning at 1 AM to major building construction beginning a 8 AM. The property is a huge maze of various lodging facilities, many under heavy construction to include a major waterway being reconfigured by earth moving equipment. To hear the ocean one needs to sit next to the ocean.

Our ocean view studio room was new with a nice balcony and two queen beds. Finish work in the room was not good; the wall paint was streaky, there was paint over spray on the TV and dresser. It was evident that the room had not been inspected before receiving occupants.

There are many restaurants and poolside eateries. Prices are high for average food.

Just got back from our stay in Nuevo Vallarta's Grand Mayan. OMG. It was so amazing. The resort is absolutely beautiful. We were allowed to go to any of the resort restaurants and bars: Mayan Palace, Grand Mayan, Grand Bliss and Luxxe. We loved the lazy river at the Grand Mayan. The lobby bar at the Luxxe was chill and they had all the top shelf liquor we love. Twice we went to the Santuario. The Santuario was breathtakingly beautiful at night. They have entertainment nightly. Get there by 7pm and you'll get a nice seat in the middle of the water.

The rooms were so nice. Apparently our room was one that hasn't been refurnished but we couldn't tell because it was beautiful. Granite counter tops and travertine tile throughout. The dipping pool was an added surprise. We loved the daily maid service and nightly bed turndown service. We felt so pampered!

It seemed like the staff of all the resorts were obsessed with cleanliness. All the resorts were impeccably clean. The style of all the resorts was modern and sleek.

There are only two negatives:
1. The Grand Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta turned out to be the "family" resort which meant there were a lot of kids. Our group was three single women, but we still ended up having a good time. I mean come on, there is a kids water park and a wave pool, of course there would be kids.
2. The timeshare presentation. It took about three hours for the timeshare presentation. We went because we wanted to get free tickets to the Mexican Fiesta on the beach. Turns out we also got 10% off all food, beverage and spa services. BUT, they are pushy. Try not to get ticked off. Don't let it ruin your vacation. After it's done they won't bug you again.

I still am happy to give the Grand Mayan a five star review because we were that impressed by the resort, surrounding resorts, cleanliness and friendliness of the staff.

Here are a couple of tips:
1. Try not to check in on a Saturday or Sunday. There were a TON of people checking in on those days. We arrived on a Tuesday and there was nobody there.
2. You may want to pass on the Mexican Fiesta at the resort. The food was pretty good, but overall the show was just ok.
3. Go straight to your room after you check-in. They initially asked us to go to the concierge to walk us to our room. We passed and went directly to our room. Turns out we would have had to sit and talk to the concierge about setting up a presentation and go over some other items. If you go to your room they'll just call you on the phone. You're tired from your flight, last thing you want to do is listen to a sales pitch straight up.
4. HAVE FUN!!!!!!

We will definitely be back to the Grand Mayan! Once you go you'll want to go back again and again!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are amazing!
