“Great resort for kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

This is a great Spring Break location, wherever you live. If you go this time of year, you are nearly guaranteed perfect weather (81 degrees and sunny consistently). There are multiple pools for both kids and adults, all of varying temperature to please both warmer water and cooler water people. The lazy river is a great time, good current to propel you along, and they do not make you stay in the inner tube, which makes it more fun. They have 2 wave pools, and a fantastic beach with great waves. The activity pool is loud, but you can escape that by sitting further away, or going to the beach. Thus, the grounds are beautiful, and functional for both you and your family. Service is excellent, everyone is willing to help. The health club has great equipment, and is included. Rooms have plenty of space, especially if you get a 2 Bedroom Suite. We sleep 6 comfortably.
Weaknesses include the food, which is good to average, but not spectacular. There are some off site restaurants within walking distance which are fantastic (Portabellos and Prime 159). These are safe walks for you and your family. I agree with the review that internet is expensive, and the quality of the signal is not great. I did not try to get internet elsewhere, so I can't comment on that.
Finally, I do agree that the time share/fractional ownership sales is not fun. Initially I thought it would be a good experience, but once the high pressure tactics came on, it became hostile. In the end, like all of these situations, it is not worth the 10% discount, as it can begin to monopolize your vacation (we put a stop to that, but it took hostility to do so). I would avoid this unless you really want to buy a place there, and if so, bargain extensively.
Overall we love this place, and will have a better time next time by avoiding the sales people!

This is our third trip to the Grand Maya Nuevo Vallarta...so obviously we love the property. Our kids 7 and 9 can be kept very happy with the amazing pools, lazy river, water slides, wave pools and now the great fun on the beach with climbing walls and trampolines (for pay). The property is amazing and very well cared for on the outside (I see people scrubbing and cleaning the pool areas constantly).

Our room though was a bit of another matter. We were in building 3 (which I am told was mostly renovated) and our room 3686/88 were so mouldy smelling that our suitcases need to be thrown out upon our return. Our friends who were in a different building had nothing similar so I think it may be luck of the draw. The cleaning was terrible (almost a joke in the end)...floors were never swept (but they don't leave a broom for you to sweep in the kitchen you are cooking and eating in). We asked a few times to make sure the floors were swept but would still see the same mess on the floor after. I suspect that the cleaning has something to do with why these rooms are deteriorating and smelly. They look great....but are not clean.

The restaurants that we went to (mostly just dinner) were fantastic! Samba, Gong and the Oceanfront restaurant were amazing! Food was great and reasonably priced!

I would give the property a 5 for appearance and for the pool areas...but unless they start cleaning better and get rid of the mould they will have a problem getting people to return!

Room Tip: My low ratings of sleep Quality, Cleanliness and rooms is purely a result of a mouldy room as it imp...

Very high pressured sales staff who switch you from person to person to ware you down. If you still say no they are not very nice to you. Wi fi very expensive. Go to Eddies and it is free or at the golf shop. Bring enough clothes. Laundry is 8 dollars a load. Everywhere you turn you will be ripped off. We ate in the restaurants in town or behind the time share...much better. If you want to buy groceries go to walmart by bus or cab. Their food prices are ridiculous. at the resort. We own Grand Bliss and were put in the grand mayan. We heard they do this so that they put prospective buyers The kitchens are very poorly equipped. ..no measuring cups or spoons and very little pots and pans. The cafe called balance has delicious ice cream and salads or sandwiches. It is a beautiful property. We would go again as an educated consumer. I have majic jack which circumvented their horriffic chsrges. We heard horror stories about phone usage. If you go beware of above.

Room Tip: ask for an odd numbered room...face the ocean

We bought a Mayan Palace master room at Cabo property last year. We have been unable to actually book a room at Cabo as it is always full... or so they say. We have, however, been able to exchange (through RCI) for Grand Mayan 1 bdrm suite at both Playa del Carmen and here at Nuevo Vallarta.
This resort is huge, with BIG plans for expansion. If you go to a timeshare presentation, you will see that the plan is to make these Mayan properties into Mexican Disney World. We went to the presentation in order to receive discounts during our stay. However, we had spa appts. at noon and told our presenter that this was the case - he really put the pressure on us to upgrade our membership with Grand Mayan, and we firmly said No, and that we needed to leave for our appts. He seemed quite upset but what could he do - we left, and were glad to have kept the presentation short.
We learned that even if you are an owner in the Grand Mayan group - if you do an RCI exchange, you will not receive oceanview. This is just a fact, and they were very upfront about making that fact known.
However, they did honour us with a 3rd floor room overlooking the golf course, and it was fine for us. We would have preferred ocean-view but our view was acceptable.
The rooms are very nice, but the furniture is too large, and the cupboards too high. I am an average-height female (5-5) and I couldn't reach the wine glasses (tragedy!)
The pools are lovely and plentiful, but there is a caste system. So if you are at Mayan Palace, you can't go to Grand Mayan or Bliss. If you are Grand Mayan, you can't go to Bliss, but you can use Palace, etc. The levels are as such, starting from bottom - Sea Garden, Palace, Grand Mayan, Bliss, Luxxe. It's good to know what you are entitled to use.
Funny thing was - even though we could use Grand Mayan pools, we preferred Palace pool - quieter, less people there and lovely view of ocean... then at the end of our pool day, we always dipped into the lazy river for fun.
The resort is far from everything, but taxis aren't too expensive. We don't do the all-inclusive, so we taxied to Walmart for groceries. We also went to Bucerias to eat a few times - some nice little oceanfront restaurants there.
The 2 times we did eat at the resort were quite different from each other - our lunch was very nice at Samba restaurant, although the price of wine was astronomical. Our dinner at Havana Moon was unacceptable - burnt coconut shrimp with a sauce that just didn't go with it...
Having said that - service was good everywhere. Beds were a bit hard, but we had stayed at the Sheraton the previous week where the beds were fabulous.
The beach is really lovely - long and fun to swim in. Not the white sands of Cancun, but very nice, and without the big dip near the shore.
We would go back.

Room Tip: Go to the timeshare presentation for the discounts, but make sure you tell them you have an appointm...

Overall we had a great time! There were so many pools and places to relax. My daughter(6) loved the kids club. Both of my kids loved the dunk pool on the balcony. We did have a view of construction and the golf course, but there was not much noise and we enjoyed the activity. The rooms are so nice and modern with plenty of space!
We booked through RCI and received a resort credit that we used on drinks around the pool and eating out twice. The food was good both times, but remember you are in Mexico and service is a little slow. We liked the pools at he Mayan Palace where you could see the beach and there were a lot less people. We even saw a sea turtle laying her eggs! We also enjoyed walking around the grounds and the gardens. It was a little frusturating if you get seperated from one another, but not a big deal.
The only negative would be that my husband was knocked out cold by a hunk of ice thrown from a balcony! He was videotaping me go around the lazy river and next thing he knew he woke up with people standing over him! The resort would take no responsibility and barely even tried to locate the offender. My husband is 235lb guy, so imagine if that had hit a child!
Also, we did not appreciate the taxi monopoly. We had booked a driver to take us around for the day, but we had to walk outside of the area to get picked up and they still harrassed our driver.

My husband, sin and I went to the Grabd Mayan over President's break in Feb. We got our room through RCI exchange. Check in was a little slow but, my husband was the only one who complained about that. The grounds are beautiful! There is nothing like sipping in a cocktail while floating in the lazy river. Everyday the weather was perfect! My son really loved the activity pool and lazy river. The service was great-people were very friendly. For some reason we did not get the one bedroom a d we were disappointed but it worked out! We did have a problem with the bathtub. Apparently if you turned the jets in it flooded our room. Luckily housekeeping came quickly! One night we went to the Grand Luxxe and had dinner at the Mexican restaurant while our soon was st the kids club and that was great. Anyway, we loved it so much, I went ahead and booked us for Feb. next year and I already can't wait to go!

The Mayan Palace property is nice, but it is way too big. You must walk so far from your room to everything. Yes, they have shuttles running, but it isn't my idea of a vacation to be waiting for a shuttle. To get to the beach you must go down these maze of tree covered paths which take half your vacation to find your way. Its like a corn maze. The resort is expanding (like its not big enough), so there is construction going on.
